Sweet. Also, today my phone switched to US Cellular for the first time. I didn't even know they offered service around here, so that was a pleasant surprise.

Sorry if this has been asked before(searched the past 3 pages quickly and couldn't find it) but what is the app that lets you force your phone to use certain towers? SignalSpy? Follow-up question: how do you check what network you're on through your phone, just somewhere in the settings and phone info?

Has anyone here bought a second phone from Fi for someone else? My wife is in need of a new phone and I know the 5X is perfect for her, and the price is right, but I'm a little confused. I figured since I was already a Fi customer it wouldn't matter, I would just order the phone and be done with it. However, on checkout it gives the warning that if it isn't activated within 30 days I'll be charged the full $400, and they're shipping a new sim card with apparently no way to stop that. Could I just put my sim in the new phone and have that count as "activation?"

Like what it says, just activate the phone before 30 days or you owe full price. Now I know when you activate with the same sim card on a different device, the new device becomes linked to that SIM iirc. Not totally sure how it works with the new family plans and whatnot, but that's why you'd need a new SIM I think.

Week 2 of the Fi Advent calendar is out. No big, easy freebies like the of Play credit last week. Is the "refer a friend to Fi" thing new? It's one of the items in the calendar this week, but I can't say I've seen it before. It looks like a good deal: refer a friend, and once they've been active on Fi for 30 days, both the inviter and the invitee get a $20 credit on their accounts! Time to start a goon referral chain? hah

Since wifi calls come in over Hangouts instead of the dialer, they get muted when DnD mode is on. How do I get around this?
|
# ? Dec 12, 2016 20:12 |
Settings -> notifications (I assume this works, I haven't tried it, DND means everybody gently caress off imo)

My wife's Nexus 5X decided to go into an unrecoverable bootloop this morning. No idea if it got an update, but it just started all of a sudden. I had to speak with one Project Fi CSR, then LG, then back to Project Fi before they'd agree to replace it. Apparently it's happened to a few people with 5Xs. Now we're just waiting for the email from Google for the replacement.

I think it was a known issue because I found several people who had the same issue when looking for a fix and the recommended solution seemed to be "call google for a replacement". My 6P was less than a year old and so still covered by the official warranty, was the 5X older than that?

Is it still not possible to port your hangouts number (which is the one I give to everyone) to fi and get multiplatform texting and calling? Being able to call/text from my computer is an absolute requirement for me.

I noticed Google is still offering the 32gb version of the 5X through their website but not the 16gb version - does the 32gb version not have the boot loop problem?

yes, i'm serious. while this problem is known to occur, it's completely stupid for some goon come in here all "um durr well clearly this problem has been studied in-depth such that a quantitative scientific consensus has been reached with regards to its incidence in the 32GB model versus the 16GB model". we're working with very anecdotal data here and anyone who bases a decision upon it is foolish

You can either use your google voice number on project fi or replace it with a new number or a ported number from another carrier. I wanted to keep my google voice number so I transferred it to a second google account. You can use hangouts for multiplatform texting and calling with project Fi, regardless of if you are using your old google voice number or not, I found answering calls on a PC or other device to be a little funky though. Texting from a PC works great.

A particular run of the 5X has the issue. Mine was 32 GB. I bought at launch. I do not know if the 16GB is also affected, but you can check the Google product forums to see if anyone has mentioned it. Google is not releasing any information beyond saying it is a hardware issue affecting a limited number of phones. Google and LG are out of 5X phones short of what is left for Project Fi customers. At the beginning of October, they replaced my broken one with a refurb, which has not yet bricked. They have since run out of those and have been offering a cash refund to those with bricked phones. I don't know if the Fi 5Xs are refurb or new. They are offering them at the refurb price, but since the Pixel is out they may have lowered it anyway. I have no information on this. I dropped it and got the Pixel. I still have my 5X and haven't sold it because the ear speaker is crap and sounds like a 1980s Radio Shack walkie talkie. I understand that it's the cheapest way to get on Fi, but having experienced the phone between the poor quality control, laggy inconsistent performance, and already stated issues, I will never buy an LG phone again. Pixel is life. FogHelmut fucked around with this message at 16:37 on Dec 13, 2016 |

Any other goons who are reading this, and who are thinking about switching: make sure you get a referral code! You and your refer-er both get a $20 bill credit after your first month on Fi. The last time I looked at it, this deal was only good until January 11, 2017, so if you're just being lazy about switching, this is a nice little bonus to motivate you. Is the $10 Google Play money thing still going on as well as the other stuff for the holidays? Also, have a hilariously bad story of my time with Google Customer Support: I ordered my Project Fi SIM kit on December 16th and noticed it was through FedEx Smart Post. I called FedEx and was told that the 12/27 date was when it would get to USPS, NOT to my house. I would then have to wait a few more days (more than likely after Christmas) to get my SIM kit. This would NOT do as I would be without phone service for at least a week as I'm disconnecting Cricket. I was willing to pay for a new SIM kit to be quickly shipped to me if that was what it took and I understood that it might've been my fault, that's fine. But I wasn't told that it would take THIS long (apparently, as I found out, even Fi Support didn't expect that to be the case). So, I looked on Project Fi's site for help and I saw the "Call Me" button and I explained what was wrong in the text box and they called about 20 minutes later. Except, for whatever reason, Google Store called me which has nothing to do with Fi even though Google Store is handling the SIM kit? Store Support let me explain my problem and then switched me immediately to Project Fi Support. When I was connected to Fi Support, the Fi Support rep was confused as to how I even got the number because it's always a "Call Me" option. Apparently, when Store Support swapped me over, she didn't bother to fill out my information before switching me over to Fi Support. None of my information had populated. No e-mail, no order number, no nothing. As I was explaining what my issue was, she had to (politely, I might add) interrupt and say "Wait...who are you?" It was then she noticed she had NO information about me. She was VERY annoyed and vocally expressed this towards her co-worker to me. Nothing expletive but you could tell it was implied. So she tried to populate my information with my e-mail and that worked (apparently, they sent me an e-mail from Store Support as well). quote:Hi ThermoPhysical, Fi Support put me on hold to see if she could order a new SIM kit for me. While she had me on hold, Store Support had taken my case back to their side and removed the information on Fi's side (we never figured out why). When Store Support sent that e-mail to me, they also took my case back to their side of the support... so Fi Support couldn't order a new SIM card for me. While looking into trying to order a new SIM for me, Fi Support noticed that Google claimed I'd receive my SIM card on Dec 23nd...but FedEx themselves said it would be a lot longer than that. While she was trying to get my case back, she got so frustrated, she ended up just clearing out my entire Fi account and let me resign up and get the 2 day shipping this time for free with her on the line. She said the e-mail that Store Support sent makes NO sense and Fi Support said she speaks Spanish but she knows I'M not speaking Spanish so she didn't know what was going on "over there". So finally we got it all set up and I should get it on this following Wednesday direct from FedEx. This wasn't some "typical India support" as others have racistly told me but I'm sure somewhere in the US. At the end-of-call survey, I said in my message that there were some major issues with Store Support, but Fi Support did her damndest and I commended her for that.
