Laserface posted:I wish they could capture their live sound in the studio more. its such a spacious yet heavy sound. Their albums feel a bit flat, production-wise, to me. Like wall of sound was the goal but they left the sliders at 40% or something. It's too bad Atma has such a weird, muddy sound. I didn't really appreciate the tunes on that album until I heard them live. Illusion of Motion and Unreal Never Lived sound amazing, though. Those are still the two best YOB albums for me. Here's a crunchy new band from members of 3 Inches of Blood/Bison/Haggatha etc.: https://worseband.bandcamp.com/

Really wasn't an engaging year in the doom/stoner/sludge for me, partially because I totally stopped reviewing for two or three months due to prolonged computer issues. Everything that I had in mind as possible picks for this year either wasn't a full album (Witchstone/The Death Wheelers split gets respect), or turned out to be reissues on second look (Goya's Obelisk, Strange Broue's Mystifying Oracle, Desert Suns' Desert Suns, Brume's Donkey).

Zoben posted:I don't always want to pimp my friends out too much, but Droids Attack did some really cool packaging for their CD. The songs were all "ancient aliens" and "Mayan apocalypse" based, so I did the art based on that idea as well. We were proud of how it turned out It was a long process. Plus, Droids plays some really solid stoner punk, kinda standard sometimes but that's how you keep it going for so long! Congrats dude! The Obelisk chose this album cover for one the 12 Best Album Covers this year. It is probably one of my favorites too. http://theobelisk.net/obelisk/2016/12/12/2016-album-covers-list/

Weirdly enough, the cover is the least detailed drawing I made for the album and took the least amount of time. It had the most iconic imagery though.

I feel like I missed mention of Hunted by Khemmis in here somewhere. I'm just finishing up a listen as I make dinner and this is ridiculously good to me. I took a little break from Awful for a while so maybe that's why I didn't hear of it until some Best of 2016 lists now? Either way, I'm upset I could have been listening to this for almost 2 months already.

Thou is playing at St Vitus in NYC Jan 6th and 7th - the 6th is already sold out, but I was able to snag a ticket to the 7th (only $15 too)! Loved the garage show I saw them at like 2 years ago, so I'm incredibly psyched about this one. All my friends are working/busy that day so I'll be going alone, if any goons will be there hit me up, it's nice to have company at cool metal shows.

So I saw Boris the other night. They were opened for by some prog/mathy instrumental 2-piece called The Broken Oak Duet who turned up late and were generally pretty uninteresting. Boris was amazing though, and Atsuo makes the most amazing expressions whilst drumming.
