Paxson doesn't care because he knows he's not getting fired. And Gar is going to do everything in his power to keep his job. Blowing up the team would cause the Reinsdorfs to lose money which would put pressure on Paxson to do something.

I was going to post something similar, I think the only chance they blow it up is the day after they sign a new tv deal. Then they can cut tons of salary and Reinsdorf will still make money

I remember being told somewhere that the Deng deal wasn't bad because he could contribute while not blocking the young guys and they'd still have enough money next summer for someone else

Not bad but what about the Mozgov deal then? Were they bringing him around for 18 mil a year to avoid blocking their stable of young centers?

In the summer of 2020 they will have a huge cap bonanza and their young guys will have enough time under their belts to know whether you fish or cut bait. I think I see what the Lakers are doing but its sorta weird they decided their living cap holds were Mozgov and Deng. Deng I kinda see since he is a jack-of-all-trades glue guy who seems like the kind of dude you want young players to be around, I guess.

I'm glad Deng got paid because he is a cool guy but whenever I watch the Lakers he looks kind of washed up. Remember reading that his game wouldn't age well because he never was that athletic and once he lost a little of what he had it would be bad. Plus he's not a great shooter to make up for it. Last 2 years of that deal could be real bad.

I think the first two years are also bad but I don't think the Lakers want to pay people to win basketball games right now.

Hello? Can you hear me? ...Perhaps if I shout? AAAAAAAAAH!
The problem with paying deng is that to get the best value out of him, you run a switch heavy defense and play major minutes at the 4 with him.

That is almost not what he's doing in los angeles because there's a billion PFs there.

While still overpaid, Deng has atleast started to look like the guy he was last season recently. Getting into double digits consistently with some rebounding and reasonable defense. I'm still much happier with having him on that contract than having tried to get Evan Turner or Kent Bazremore, 2 of the guys a lot of Lakers fans were clamoring for last offseason.

Actually his stats in 11 games in december are fine, 10 and 5 on 47% FG and 36% from 3pt

That's still not a 18 mil/yr guy, even in 2020 cap numbers, but its fine. What he lets you do is cover multiple positions so if you have a rookie that starts looking promising Deng isn't going to prevent anyone from getting minutes but still be able to contribute.

I think Bazemore was actually not good and just had a good season on a team that makes wings who can shoot look better than they are.

edit: a mediocre season.

McHale didn't hit 20 a game in many of his prime seasons, now he's going for 30 a game?

Based upon his shooting percentages he could've done that on a weaker team. Scoring 2,000+ points with a 65% TS% is really elite.

http://www.basketball-reference.com...1.0&order_by=ws

He could sacrifice some TS% and boost that PPG with merely two more buckets per game to reach 30.

They're bad but this year no team has been truly awful. Right now all teams are better than -8 SRS and that's better than usual. Some years teams are in that -10 or worse range.

The last really good year in this regard was 2007 when the worst team (Hawks) was at -4.86

Who's been saying that recently? One of the concerns is Russell's extremely deficient shooting. I have less faith in him compared to the other two. Not that either of those guys would be MVP in 2017.
