Looking at the GIF after I split it into each individual frame, it looks like it only hits his arm while still intact. It hits the top of his shoulder, slides down the side of his arm, and shatters immediately upon the bottom edge hitting the ground. The shattering is likely what saved him from more serious injury, as the glass immediately falls toward his head as it's fragmenting and showers across his skull with enough force to knock his keffiyeh off. Had the glass not practically turned to powder on impact, he would have been knocked for a loop at best.
