Being thus constrained to leave their native soyle and tyme, their families & livings, and all their freinds & famillier acquaintance, it was much, and thought marvelous by many. But to goe into a tyme they knew not (but by leggend), wher they must learne a new customm, and get their wynns they knew not how, it being a dear place, & subjecte to ye misseries of deffence, bul-penns, and dingers, it was by many thought an adventure almost desperate, a case intolerable, & a misserie worse then death. Espetially seeing they were not aquainted with electrycitie nor traffique, (by which this tyme doth subsiste,) but had only been used to a plaine countrie life, & ye inocente trade of base-ball. But these things did not dismay them (though they did some times trouble them) for their desires were sett on ye ways of Smasher, & to injoye his ordinances; but they rested on his providence, & knew in whom they had beleeved. Super-League XXI Preview: The Home of the Rockford Losers, the Vae Victis Division! ... Wait, what happened? gently caress. Last season in the Vae Victis, the Rockford Losers, former Super-League Champions, got demoted to the Subpar League. The Llamas have joined this division to replace the Losers. They won the Monster's Ball division last season in the Subpar, and won promotion as a result. They're not particularly interesting. Some other stuff happened, too, including Armitage and the Jobbers making the Super-League playoffs for the first time ever! Great news for him, though that performance is likely not to be repeated, as I'll get into. TheMcD's monstrous experiment known as the Hoboken Zephyrs won 82 games and they're back for another season in their insane stadium, which emphasizes contact hitting and power pitching in a sort of Mogul min-maxing thing. Does it work? Eh, it depends on your definition of work. The Generics are back as well, which is a thing. Let's take a look at the teams, by position: Catcher 1. 1956 Yogi Berra / 1932 Ernie Lombardi (JCJ) 2. 1949 Yogi Berra (RCH) 3. 1981 Ted Simmons (NEG) 4. 1906 Roger Bresnahan / 1938 Rick Ferrell (HOB) Congratulations, Armitage, you have the #1 rank in the catcher position. Fun fact about Berra and Lombardi: I platooned them on my first team in Super-League 8. They were swiftly relegated after one season. To be fair, Berra and Lombardi comprise a pretty good platoon, and would be first in the rankings in most divisions. Young Berra should be good, too. Ted Simmons seems to be average to good at a lot of things, which makes him a perfectly acceptable, though not overwhelmingly desirable, option. I get the idea behind the Bresnahan and Ferrell platoon, but even in the Zephyrs stadium I don't think it will work. Bresnahan only hit .300 twice, and Ferrell only hit .300 four times. Bresnahan's ability to throw out baserunners is the real key here, but catcher isn't going to be any less of a black hole in the lineup than it was with Buster Posey. First Base 1. 1938 Johnny Mize (RCH) 2. 1942 Jimmie Foxx (JCJ) 3. 1882 Roger Connor (NEG) 4. 1901 Joe Kelley (HOB) Overall, a pretty good group. kw0134 figured out how to make Johnny Mize work in the Super-League, and boy has he worked well. I don't see any reason why that won't continue. Foxx is usually reasonably adequate, and sometimes he's even better than that. Roger Connor is arguably the best player of the 1800's, so he's not remembered at all by anybody who's not involved in the Super-League. Contact hitting and base stealing mean he's not exactly in the standard mold of 1B's, but it should work for the Llamas. The Zephyrs have a Roger Connor as well, but they are instead playing Joe Kelley at 1B. He's pretty much in the same mold as Connor, but with a better eye and less hitting ability. He should work well for the Zephyrs. Second Base 1. 1911 Eddie Collins (NEG) 2. 1910 Eddie Collins (HOB) 3. 1932 Rogers Hornsby (RCH) 4. 1933 Buddy Myer / 1947 Bobby Doerr (JCJ) Eddie Collins! Aside from not having any power, he's basically the best player you can have at second in the Super-League. Hornsby's pretty close as well, but his bat isn't as consistent and neither is his glove. The Myer/Doerr platoon seems like Armitage is trying to make the best of a bad situation. Neither of these guys is particularly great - despite the screams of a billion insane Red Sox fans - but if things go right they could be a serviceable platoon until Armitage can find somebody better. Something to note, as of this writing I believe Bobby Doerr is the last living person to play in MLB in the 1930's. Dude's 98 years old. drat. Third Base 1. 1949 Jackie Robinson (NEG) 2. 1955 George Kell (JCJ) 3. 1939 Stan Hack (RCH) 4. 1888 Roger Connor (HOB) When most people talk about Jackie Robinson they mostly talk about breaking the color barrier and fighting the racism and segregation in MLB, but he was also quite a fantastic player, with the bat, with the glove, and on the basepaths. He put up 9.6 WAR in his third season in the majors, winning an MVP. He mostly played second in the majors, but his work at third base was pretty good too. George Kell is not nearly as good or as memorable as Jackie Robinson. But I guess overall he's not terrible, which for the Super-League is about as good as you can get at third. Stan Hack is similarly not terrible and also not memorable. I feel like I talked about Roger Connor when talking about a position he could actually play, and I use the term "play" loosely. The problem with Connor at third is that in the optimal situation for the Zephyrs - fly-balls, ideally at home, and strikeouts - infield defense doesn't matter. But let's take a quick look at how often that actually happens. Obviously, Curt Schilling is going to pitch most of the innings for the Zephyrs, so I'm going to use his (median) stats. Doing some math, I've determined that Schilling will get a strikeout anywhere or a flyball at home in roughly 36.2% of at-bats. Most of that low number comes from the fact that only half the Zephyrs games are at home, the rest comes from the fact that any pitcher will give up a combination of fly balls, ground balls, and line drives. Compared to most other pitchers, that's quite a high amount, but that's still only about 6% better than his overall groundball percentage. This kind of exposes the flaw in the Zephyrs concept: no matter how much TheMcD tries to make the flyball-pitching/contact-hitting paradigm work, there's still roughly 11-12 PA's each game where the Zephyrs poor infield defense could be exposed. Collins, Kelley, and the catchers can be roughly serviceable, but Connor will be a walking disaster. Connor's bat plays in Hoboken like few others, but I don't know that it's worth the trouble in the field. Shortstop 1. 1897 Honus Wagner (RCH) 2. 1941 Luke Appling (JCJ) 3. 1930 Joe Sewell (HOB) 4. 1965 Ernie Banks (NEG) Honus Wagner is cool. If you haven't heard about him before you might want to look him up, because drat. "Luscious" Luke Appling and Joe Sewell were remarkably similar, though Appling was arguably the better talent, both on the field and in the batter's box. Sewell had a notable talent for avoiding striking out, where in his final nine full seasons, he struck out only 48 times. To put that in context, Albert Pujols is one of the greater modern hitters at avoiding strikeouts, and he's never struck out less than 50 times in a single season. The same concern that popped up with Connor might also be an issue with Sewell, as his glovework was never rated highly. I don't think that it will be as much of an issue with him, though. I know that Banks is highly regarded in the SL, and his contributions to MLB as a Chicago Cub are of course incredible. But in the SL, his bat just does not play. Whether his good defense - though at age 34 it's quite a bit more questionable - can make up for it depends on the team, and I don't think the Llamas are good enough to make that a minor issue. Left Field 1. 1920 Joe Jackson (HOB) 2. 1955 Ted Williams (NEG) 3. 2013 Albert Pujols (JCJ) 4. 1923 Ken Williams (RCH) There's four great options here. I know that putting Jackson ahead of Ted Goddamn Williams is probably going to be controversial, but there's a couple reasons I think Jackson will be better. For one, Jackson's bat, particularly at 32 years old, is pretty good, and I think a lot of people have ignored his hitting talent in the past. Second, Williams is only playing the field because the Red Sox of the 40's and 50's - and now the Llamas - don't have the designated hitter. Even if he were a better fielder, he's 36 years old in 1955 and is a lot more likely to get injured or just be bad. Jackson, on the other hand, could actually play both left and right field. Jackson is also a weird beneficiary of Baseball Mogul's poor era adjustments, and his defense actually ends up significantly better in the Super-League than it was in real life. In addition, Jackson's contact/doubles hitting prowess should play up in the Zephyrs home stadium as well. But remember, Ted Williams is still Ted Williams, so he should be pretty valuable. Albert Pujols is a great hitter, and could possibly be the best hitter in this group, but he hadn't played left field in 10 years by 2013. That will definitely be an issue, though if he hits as well as he did last season, a small issue. There's far from any guarantee that he can actually repeat that performance, though. Ken Williams is in a lot of ways a poor mans Ted Williams. He's by no means a bad choice for left field, and the Generics stadium will help with his skillset, but he's not the star player any of the rest of this group is. Center Field 1. 1917 Ty Cobb (RCH) 2. 1949 Duke Snider / 1983 Andre Dawson (NEG) 3. 1934 Bob Johnson (JCJ) 4. 1890 Jimmy Ryan (HOB) Ty Cobb is one of those all-time greats. There's nothing more that needs to be said. The Snider and Dawson platoon is cool. They're both good CF's who can hit and hit for power, and they both have the platoon advantage. I like it. Bob Johnson seems like one of those guys that you only use in CF if you have no better options. I feel like Armitage, who has a million players, should have a better option somewhere. But as a stopgap measure, I guess he could be useful. Jimmy Ryan has literally no track record in the Super-League, outside of last season with the Zephyrs. He seems to have the build that would work out for the Zephyrs, but until he has that track record, I can't rank him any higher. Right Field 1. 1943 Mel Ott (RCH) 2. 1931 Paul Waner (HOB) 3. 1919 Harry Heilmann (NEG) 4. 1910 Joe Jackson (JCJ) Mel Ott is cool, and I feel like he's underrated in real life because he basically had no personality. He unfortunately wasn't memorable in any way, and had to play in the same city as Ruth and Gehrig in the beginning, and DiMaggio in the end of his career. Waner, Heilmann, and Jackson are all remarkably similar. Singles hitting, fairly good defense in right field. Waner is in his prime, Heilmann is kind of young, and Jackson is very young, which is what determined my rankings. I think, if they were all in their primes, I would reverse those three rankings. But they aren't, so I didn't. Bench 1. 1970 Harmon Killebrew / 1949 Duke Snider / 1914 Honus Wagner / 1943 Mel Ott / 1949 Roy Campanella / 1927 Buddy Myer (RCH) 2. 1882 Buck Ewing / 1981 Paul Molitor / 1981 Robin Yount / 1996 Mark Grace / 1964 Al Kaline / Platoon Partner (NEG) 3. 1924 Harry Heilmann / 1985 Cal Ripken / 1932 Babe Herman / 1952 Al Rosen / Platoon Partners (JCJ) 3. 1924 Frankie Frisch / 1874 Ross Barnes / 1906 George Davis / 1995 Kenny Lofton / 1892 Sam Thompson / Platoon Partner (HOB) I absolutely love the Generics bench. Killebrew, Snider, and (another!) Mel Ott should be great pinch-hitters off the bench, and can sub in the OF if necessary. Campanella should be a good backup catcher, and Myer should be a good backup IF. Wagner's age is kind of concerning, but the Generics shouldn't be depending on him too much. Similarly, the Llamas bench is in some cases quite enviable. Molitor and Yount are premium bench guys; I don't know that they have the talent to start, but they can at least provide excellent insurance in case of issues in the IF or CF. Grace and Kaline can be quite good as well. Buck Ewing is an interesting backup, but I don't know how well he will hit in the Super-League. The Jobbers have a couple interesting pieces on their bench as well. Heilmann and Rosen are both good not great players, and Ripken is a fantastic part-time 3B/SS (seriously, Armitage, trade me the Ripken please). I keep on mixing up Babe Herman and Billy Herman, but neither of them is particularly good, so whichever one Armitage has probably won't be that useful. Like most of their other hitters, the Zephyr's bench is full of singles and doubles hitters. Frankie Frisch is a good backup 2B/3B, and Kenny Lofton is a wonderful CF who can probably step in easily if Jimmy Ryan doesn't work out. Sam Thompson is also quite under-rated and could be a starter in the right situation. Ross Barnes and George Davis, on the other hand, shouldn't be let anywhere near the field. Barnes in particular is a terrible fielder. I get the idea that TheMcD has to find players that fit his team construction, but there have to be better options. Starting Pitcher #1 1. 1901 Rube Waddell (NEG) 2. 1922 Pete Alexander (JCJ) 3. 1920 Walter Johnson (RCH) 4. 1996 Curt Schilling (HOB) Rube Waddell was an incredible eccentric, which I guess helps explain why he became a pitcher; he was also an incredible pitcher. The left-handed deadballer is kind of a rarity in the Super-League, and Waddell can also strike people out, which makes him one of the best Super-League pitchers there is. Alexander and Johnson, similarly, are excellent deadballers. They're both on the wrong side of 30, though, which could be a bit worrisome, as they both fall off a bit with age. And as for Curt Schilling, well... https://twitter.com/gehrig38/status/785306253937545216 Starting Pitcher #2 1. 1882 Tim Keefe (NEG) 2. 1874 Candy Cummings (RCH) 3. 1974 Rick Reuschel (JCJ) 4. 1997 Curt Schilling (HOB) I like Tim Keefe, and I think he needs to get more exposure in the Super-League. Candy Cummings literally can't strike out anyone, which might not work well. But on the other hand, it's worked out before, so it could work out again! Maybe. Rick Reuschel is coming off a career year, but this version is kind of young and does not have a track record of success. And as for Curt Schilling, well... https://twitter.com/gehrig38/status/785306253937545216 Starting Pitcher #3 1. 1912 Walter Johnson (RCH) 2. 1971 Don Sutton (JCJ) 3. 1911 Chief Bender (NEG) 4. 1998 Curt Schilling (HOB) Walter Johnson is kind of young in 1912, but he's still Walter Johnson. I feel like a lot has been written about Don Sutton, but then I realized he's seen surprisingly little use over the past few seasons. He should be a largely serviceable pitcher. Back in the early 1900's, any baseball player who was remotely Native American got the nickname "Chief." American's were really racist back then. Still are. "Chief" Bender is a largely generic deadball pitcher who had an excellent peak with the Philadelphia Athletics, winning a couple World Series with them. And as for Curt Schilling, well... https://twitter.com/gehrig38/status/785306253937545216 Starting Pitcher #4 1. 1911 Eddie Plank (RCH) 2. 1882 Mickey Welch (NEG) 3. 1971 Jerry Koosman (JCJ) 4. 2000 Curt Schilling (HOB) Eddie Plank is one of the only other good deadball lefties, which means he usually is pretty good in the Super-League. This one is kind of old in 1911, which could limit his use, but he's still pretty good. Mickey Welch got into the Hall of Fame largely on the back of winning 300 games. As a durable, generic deadballer, he should be OK for the Llamas, but I suspect not much better than that. Jerry Koosman reminds me of a more talented Jim Kaat. Overall, I suspect he can be useful; I don't like him because he pitched for the Mets. Ew! And as for Curt Schilling, well... https://twitter.com/gehrig38/status/785306253937545216 Starting Pitcher #5 1. 1886 Bob Caruthers (RCH) 2. 1948 Robin Roberts (NEG) 3. 1969 Mel Stottlemyre (JCJ) 3. 2000 Curt Schilling (HOB) I suspect all of these pitchers will be roughly similar; none of them distances themselves from the rest in terms of pitching talent, and for fifth starters, that's not bad. Caruthers can hit a bit as well, which is why he gets the first spot. Robin Roberts is only 21, which will probably be an issue. Mel Stottlemyre is also suitably generic. And as for Curt Schilling, well... https://twitter.com/gehrig38/status/785306253937545216 Bullpen 1. 1993 Rob Dibble / 2010 Jonathan Papelbon / 2013 Jonathan Papelbon / 2012 Brian Wilson / 2012 Madison Bumgarner / 2001 Curt Schilling (HOB) 2. 1981 Rollie Fingers / 1979 Bruce Sutter / 2015 Drew Storen / 1975 Al Hrabosky / 2003 Brad Lidge / 1901 Jock Menefee (NEG) 3. 2009 Mariano Rivera / 1975 Pedro Borbon / 1977 Sparky Lyle / 1904 Chief Bender / 1969 Lindy McDaniel / 1938 Lefty Gomez (JCJ) 3. 1996 Trevor Hoffman / 1996 Kevin Brown / 1927 Dazzy Vance / 1970 Ron Perranoski / 1912 Bob Groom / 1912 Hippo Vaughn (RCH) Bullpens are notoriously fickle and volatile, but you can sort of stack the deck in your favor. Rob Dibble and Jonathan Papelbon are both excellent strikeout relievers, and Wilson and Bumgarner could be theoretically good as well. And as for Curt Schilling, well... https://twitter.com/gehrig38/status/785306253937545216 The Fingers/Sutter tandem at the back end of the Llamas bullpen should be good, if Fingers doesn't continue the Rollie Fingers tradition of melting down in the most important games of the season, and everyone else there is mediocre to OK, which I guess should work out. The Jobbers bullpen seems cobbled together from leftovers and remnants of other teams, but I guess if all goes well it will work out. Rivera of course is always a good dude to have at the back of your bullpen. The Generics bullpen is similar in that aspect, though not nearly as talented and much more worrisome. Brown and Vance should probably be in MR/LR roles, and Groom, Vaughn, and Perranoski should be not rostered. Seriously, kw, if you're looking for room for improvement, that bullpen is where you should allocate resources. Conclusion I think this division is wide open, which should make it one of the more entertaining divisions. The Generics are probably the most talented, but their bullpen could end up being a major issue. Injuries to their lineup won't be much of an issue thanks to their fantastic bench. The Llamas are overall an OK to good team. No major strengths but also no major weaknesses. I think they're the type of team that can stick around, but they wouldn't compete in most divisions without a true star player. This division, though, they might have a shot. The Jobbers are reigning champions of the division for a reason, but I can't see it continuing. No part of their team is overwhelming and a lot of their win last season came from a weak division and 90th percentile performances from Sutton, Reuschel, and a good chunk of their lineup. The division is stronger this time, so I think the Jobbers have an uphill battle to the Vae Victis crown. Finally, the Zephyrs are using their stadium to mask some serious roster construction issues. I don't know that there's much that they can do to get better, short of getting luckier like they did in SL19 and SL18, or lucking into a very high pick. If I was forced to pick, I would probably have to go with the Llamas to win the division, though it will be a very close race.
