Assuming ATLUS is nice enough to do that, which is currently unlikely given it took forever for SMT IV to be released and they delayed the European release of Apocalypse. Like SEGA Europe, they really don't like us because of "poor sales" (which is complete and utter crap)

Speaking of Apocalypse I haven't finished it yet, I should prob go do that.

Finished SMT4: Apocalypse last night, holy poo poo that game was satisfying. Been YEARS since I got into a jrpg as hard, I'm also glad I didn't resort to the macca dlc to finish it like I did in SMT4 original. The final boss design was fantastic though I slightly prefer the one they showed in the concept art.

Now I'm gonna go back to Nocturne so I can do a strenght build like I alway wanted to.

So my first real foray into the SMT series is going well. 11 hours into Strange Journey, on the third Sector now. I did play Innocent Sin for a goo while too but man...it was not fun. If only that game's soundtrack could be transplanted into SJ, everything be perfect.

Although, oddly, SJ is making me want to start up P2 again and try to finish it... It's not like I hated the characters or anything, it just felt so tedious and pointless. Maybe I'll try again later.

Anyway, as I said, I loved the music in Persona 2. I even have a CD boxset I bought a while ago. Music is a vital part of a good gaming experience IMO.

I'm just curious since this comes up fairly often in the FF thread, which SMT games have the best soundtracks?

I'd go with Digital Devil Saga 2 and Persona 3. But all of them are pretty strong, Meguro's Uematsu-tier and he does basically all the composing. The soundtrack of 5 is shaping up to be up there in my favourites too, if the quality of the clips I've heard is representative of the final OST.

e: I do have some fondness for Strange Journey's weird orchestral stuff though. I certainly never thought that it was a weak soundtrack.

I like the battle theme, it's just the dungeon music that has been entirely "eh" to me. I have a lot of game to go, though.

As I said, it was mainly in comparison to P2 that it was kinda letting me down. P2 had nonstop great music.

Goddammit, I went to just check out some of the great music on YT and what do I stumble upon? "Maya's Death."

P5 has a good soundtrack, but I feel like a lot of the background music during scenes is a bit more forgettable than P3 or P4, it has THE BEST after school theme though.

Seriously, Beneath the Mask is a contender for one of Meguro's best songs.

If you're having fun with Strange Journey, I think you'll handily enjoy the rest of the series from the PS2 onwards.
Since you brought up the subject, I do love how orchestral the SJ soundtrack is, despite the tinny DS speakers, it produced some outstanding stuff.

Although I could never get over the fact that the regular battle theme sounds like a bunch of distorted "HEE"s and "HO"s after someone pointed that out to me.

Definitely was gonna mention these two though, I don't think anything can outrank DDS2 for me. The battle theme, the boss theme, really I just can't get enough of it.
My biggest issue with it is that for some reason the in-game music has trouble looping and so it sounds a bit choppy whenever a track ends.

Another preference-based question.

I started this series partly because I like alignments and multiple endings and that kinda good stuff. The idea there is a big moral question underlying each game in the (main) series also intrigued me.

Just wondering which game you guys feel handled it best?

It depends on what you mean handles it best.

Generally a major problem with any SMT game with alignment is "Law/Chaos are crazy rear end in a top hat options" to varying degrees because they represent extreme ends of the spectrum, with Neutral being the not-crazy-rear end in a top hat option. That said in terms of games that have handled it the best I think Nocturne (with its Reasons) and Devil Survivor (with its variety of outcomes) are the best in terms of making it at least somewhat plausible someone would chose those options.

None ever really manage to make Law/Chaos feel *good* (because they're not supposed to be unless you're full Hail God or Darwanism as a person) but those games probably do the best. DS (as a plus or a minus depending) has a re-release called Overclocked which has a 'softer' ending for both Chaos and Law that makes it more reasonable and less extreme.

Brother Entropy
Dec 27, 2009

tbh law/chaos always going to extremes in these games is more of a feature than a bug imo, it's true that it's not so hot if you're doing the whole 'what would i do in this situation' kind of roleplaying but these games never really have enough player agency to do that anyway

i should probably play devil survivor for more than hour though, maybe it's better at that

Captain Baal

Devil Survivor definitely has the best overall with structure, character building, mission effecting, and just interesting stuff being done with it. Nocturne is the best overall as far as the mainline games go since the Reasons are much less extreme, but they still do ultimately turn to the same militant unsympathetic salesmen in every game with the exception of Shijima and True Demon. I actually like a lot SMTIV's theming around that stuff but mechanically it's a mess and probably has the biggest ridiculous turn to crazy assholes of any of them.

That being said the neutral ending in that game is an insane high I feel.

Yeah, I think SMTIV has strong themes but kind of rushes too hard to get where it is going and feels a little awkward to pull off. Final is sort of the opposite direction where the themes are kind of weaker but better executed except for the godawful-rear end final dungeon. (Made up for by a hilarious final boss fight.)

Devil Survivor handles it best, with Strange Journey coming close. Raidou 2 brings up the rear but it's not actually LNC.

The issue here is that if you're looking for a meaningful choice with no outright "correct" answer you are looking at the wrongest series possible.

Wiki tells me the Devil Survivor games are tactical RPGs? I've never played one before. I guess everyone has to start somewhere.

I will still probably leave it for after Nocturne, Persona 3 and 4 and...uh...well, maybe it'll come after that, unless those Raidou games are good.

Raidou 1 is mediocre and very strange (arguably the best demon in the entire game is Throne). The improvement from Raidou 1 to 2 is stunning... except that 2 is so easy an elementary schooler could probably break it over one knee.

It's also fair to note that Devil Survivor gives you tons of battlefield control options which the escort missions encourage you to use. If you try to straight-brute-force it they can be nasty but the game has Racial Skills for a reason.

Oh I'm sure Neutral or whatever is supposed to be the right answer every time. Still, it's new and different and that's a good motivation for playing a game, at least to me.

Glad to see someone else sticking up for SJ, though. Part of why I chose it as my first SMT game is based on someone telling me I wouldn't be disappointed by its alignment system.

The reason Strange Journey is good is because it manages to make two out of the three alignments a reasonable choice given what you see.

They screwed up with Chaos though, unbelievably. They went too far with the imagery of literal rivers of blood instead of focusing on evolutionary aspects. So close yet so drat far.

Raidou 2 has a similar problem in that it makes two of the alignments look reasonable, and the third... not so much. But again, it's not LNC. I would look at that if you liked how Strange Journey handled it.

No, I meant Raidou 2, this one:

People like to call its alignments LNC, but that's not what they are. It's Honesty/Directness, Neutrality, Patience. You know, actual human attributes as opposed to cosmic forces.

DS1 Overclocked is probably one of the first times I felt Chaos was just an all around better ending than most (assuming you go the "Don't kill humans" subroute), whereas it's far more ambiguous in the original release. The updated Law ending kinda creeped me out by comparison

It doesn't depend what you like. I'm a big groove, jazz, blues, old house, rock, funk and orchestral listener (call me old-fashioned), so I'm more into the SMT side rather than persona or whatever vocal tracks they have.

My recommendation is to start with Megami Tensei I of famicom version and move onto the rereleases and the SMT variations. SMT if is where things start getting interesting. Nocturne is where things branch off and moves on to DDS. Anything from there is a good listen even the game itself may be questionable or bad to people.

Persona stuff gets good from P2 onwards. Most P4 stuff is not for me but people love it and eat it up like candy. Persona 5 on the other hand is just the kind of game for an old school guy like me. Vocal tracks are still not my thing, but everything else is great.
