Yeah I agree with them more often than not (probably due to similar age and background) but it's interesting when they have a different view on stuff because it is usually a relatively well constructed argument.

I liked R1 more than them but not enough to argue their views that hard because really who gives a poo poo what I think.

The context thing was a really good Plinkett-type criticism. If the movie more or less works with the given context, and would be a bizarre mess without, that means Disney is borrowing against a finite (albeit renewable) resource.

I guess, but it feels a bit pedantic here. I don't really think the Force requires an explanation in R1 and that's the only major setting detail that isn't either explained or readily apparent. I get the insistence that the movie should be able to stand up on its own without context, but I simply don't think that's strictly true. The film is a "Star Wars" story and given that a massive list of Star Wars films that do exist, I think that the setting doesn't need rehashing and explanation every single time it is introduced.

'i am quirky british male being flippant wowsers'
10 minutes

2) action scene where you could switch it with an action scene from american ultra and i probably wouldnt notice

I don't think any of the criticisms RLM has of R1 are wrong, I see what they are saying with all of them. Its the degree though, none of them are bad enough to ruin the movie.

Star Trek: The Motion Picture is a boring movie
Rogue One sucks rear end.

A New Hope is an amazing movie.

JJ Abrams was absolutely correct to ape it for The Force Awakens, which was pretty good.

It was a half-decent serial of Doctor Who (just like the original book). Plus, Plinkett is in it.

But I guess if you're completely avert to Doctor Who type of shows, you wouldn't like it.

Plinkett aka Mike says TFA doesn't get a mark for story, because they just ripped off A New Hope and blew up a Death Star. He then goes on to say Rogue One lacks an ending because they didn't blow up a Death Star at the end. I'm confused.

that was in the section where rouge one was analyzed sans context of being a star wars movie. so the movie ends with everyone dying and the bad guys winning

The mission is accomplished, most of the ships escape, and the movie goes out of its way (excessively so) to bridge the gap with A New Hope. They emphatically want Rogue One to be a part of a larger story, they even subtitled it "A Star Wars Story" ffs.

Removing the context makes it a different and worse movie but yeah no poo poo Mike.

Not really giving a poo poo about all of Star Wars, I do think Mike's got a point about action and humor being like frosting. I lot of films built around established IPs are forgoing interesting characters and well constructed plots for makework storytelling and/or ciphers, and relying on cool action scenes and punchy humor bits to do the heavy lifting. This isn't the worst thing ever, but it produces these ultimately forgettable movies. I think in this decade, there have been maybe 3 or 4 films that felt like they were really great, lasting movies, none of which were Star Wars or superheroes.

Agree, most people in this thread probably do too. It just doesn't really apply to R1, at least not to a large degree. Yeah the acvtion carried it, but that action had huge emotional weight. It was really interesting to see all these people sacrifice theirs lives for what they knew was a suicide mission. In the orig trig, you get this sense that Luke, the demi-god chosen one does everything, but in R1 you see the sacrifices made by the every-man that made it all possible. It had its flaws sure, but it was not a bad movie, and it had a great emotionally driven plot.

or what if they switched it with the saving private ryan as the opening then have them get chased with the plans and it ends with the transmission to lelia ship.

Many Bothans died to bring us this information. This is not the movie you are looking for. You fell into the same trap wanting a different film instead of grading the film as is.

I don't think that would work as the Rebellion is a guerilla operation and in a stand-up fight they are in no position to win. The fight we got was sort of D-Day like with Jyn and co essentially dropping in like a parachuter, you had the space fleet forcing open a beach head, you had landing craft/Nam style gunship action, the beaches was straight up Nam. You had the Tiger moment when the walkers busted in.

It has all the elements you want, you don't like the order it was given in.

I fell asleep twice while watching Room. Not because it was a boring movie, it's just I had a rough week and really needed some rest. Then I actually managed to watch it in its entirety and it was great movie.

Also, I've watched VVitch yesterday. A genuinely creepy movie, and suprpisingly accurate in portrayal of religious beliefs of the characters.

Perhaps they could've been doing something completely unrelated to a Death Star in this film!
