I like the assumption that an empire as great and powerful as Imperial Japan even needs to have long-term plans, as if the war won't be over soon already

Crazy theory here. Did no one tell New Zealand that I own Luganville? Are they just trying to build up a base that they think they still own?

Technically that's only what the Japanese are reporting, not what the Allies are.

And isn't damage based on caliber of the guns in question versus armor of the target?
From what I've seen a battleship could have been hit from a destroyer gun many times, but the game would qualify it as only few percent of the damage, as those guns cannot penetrate thick battleship armor.

I wouldn't be surprised if that actually is what's happening. I have seen AIs in other games prepare moves and still execute them even if the situation has significantly changed like sending reinforcements to a position that has already been lost. From what I've heard, WitP isn't the most flexible to begin with, so

One of our subs takes hits.

Another is confident enough to make a surface attack.

We're going to be chasing these guys all the way to Kunming.

A hit one a troopship is always good.

One last squandering of troops for the year.

The carriers arrive back at Rabaul. Soon we start loading for what may be a disastrous campaign to the south – but I need to try something, if not to at least to keep the game interesting.

So what's the plan going to be with the sweep south? And how many carriers you have over in the operation then or any heavy surface units?

OpenlyEvilJello
Dec 28, 2009

31 December 1942

German destroyer Friedrich Eckholdt, sunk by British cruiser Sheffield.
British minesweeper Bramble, sunk by German cruiser Admiral Hipper.
British destroyer Achates, sank following damage inflicted by Admiral Hipper.

All three ships were sunk during the Battle of the Barents Sea, when major German surface units sortied to engage convoy JW51B north of the North Cape, Norway. The German force consisted of the "pocket battleship" Lützow, heavy cruiser Admiral Hipper, and six destroyers. Convoy JW51B comprised 14 merchant ships with a close escort of six destroyers, two corvettes, Bramble, and two trawlers and a distant covering force of two light cruisers (Sheffield and Jamaica) and two destroyers. Bad weather scattered part of the convoy and Bramble encountered and was destroyed by Hipper's group while attempting to locate and round up stragglers. Hipper then resumed her attack on the main body of the convoy, fatally wounding Achates, but the sacrifice of Bramble and a previous aggressive defense by the escorting destroyers bought sufficient time for the covering for to arrive. The Germans, unwilling to risk serious damage, withdrew. In the process, two of the German destroyers mistook Sheffield for Hipper and attempted to form up; it was at this juncture that Eckholdt was sunk. At this time the second German force, led by Lützow, appeared from the opposite direction and engaged the convoy without success before, in turn, being driven off by the covering force. None of the merchant ships were sunk. Hitler, livid, threatened to scrap the entire surface fleet.

Our sub Captains tend to have trouble walking due to the sheer size of their balls.

The car park once again fails to bring down a single enemy bomber.

The next wave of prisoners is arriving it seems.

Yep – literally the clerks now.

Betties find and murder a troop convoy.

First up - happy new year!

Not a bad way to start it.

Its been a month of watching the points flow in from the kills.

I think we took one or two bases in China, and that was all.

Base points have been jumping up and down all month for no reason. It makes for very messy graphs.

On to the interesting ones, we have maintained parity with the Allies in aircraft losses.

Our pools remain healthy in most types.

Enemy losses continue to outstrip our own by a good margin.

The loss of their carriers really shows here.

Almost a year late but I wonder if I can still pick a lucky ship among them?

I'll claim USS Heermann if that is in the game. May it send Yamato away once again. :black101:

A sub targets a destroyer rather than either of the two tankers he can see.

Reports say this one was carrying fuel.

These planes are survivors from a downed carrier, getting their revenge.

And revenge they shall have!

Our subs are having a great start to the year.

...on the plus side I'm feeling much more angry now than I expected so this totally helps me get in character.
One weird thing about subs in witp is the way submarine doctrine isn't really modeled. Obviously you can simulate deployment strategies to a degree but if you want to use the IJN subs as a merchant-sinking force there's nothing stopping you and their long range boats and excellent torpedoes are very effective in this role. Historically 184 allied merchant ships were sunk, but this pace of attacks would easily exceed that and turn the Pacific into another Atlantic in short order.
