Is it significantly more gory than, say, Umineko? Or about the same?

I'd say about the same. The descriptions aren't terribly in depth either, if you've played say, Corpse Party, it's way more tame than that.

"Carbons? Purge? What are you talking about?!"

I'm finally coming up on the home stretch of Higurashi ch3 - I put it down for a while because honestly, the whole plot with Satoko's uncle was a bit too depressing for my anime child serial killing storybooks.

But I'm glad I kept going, Keiichi Murderbara is the best even if he's still dumb as hell, and that scene with Takano on the drive home was incredibly tense and awesome and made me like her character more (while showing a bit of her dark side). It was also great when earlier she kind of scolded Keiichi (and thus the reader) for thinking anything truly supernatural was happening - "Do you know who Santa Claus really is?" is pretty much the best line.

I am getting so many dumb theories. Since the answer arcs aren't out yet, if I go on and read Umineko when I"m done with ch4 am I going to just pop my poor brain with wild guesses? :(

Of course. But you might also want to bear in mind: While Umineko doesn't exactly spoil Higurashi's mystery, it doesn't entirely not spoil it either.

I wouldn't say it's a big issue, especially after you've read Higurashi EP4, unless you consider yourself ultra-sensitive to spoilers; I read Higurashi knowing much bigger spoilers and I didn't feel like my enjoyment was impacted too badly.

"Carbons? Purge? What are you talking about?!"

I complained earlier in the thread from getting pretty huge (I think) spoilers from an image in a random GBS thread, but all its done is give me another angle to think about things from when reading through the stories. I was planning on holding off until after ep4 anyway.

How do the answer arcs for Higurashi actually work? Is there like a 1:1 ratio to question arcs that works similarly to how they did (repeating the same span of days) or is it something else or would the answer be a spoiler in and of itself somehow?

Dr. Video Games 0031

It's not much of a spoiler at all. The answer arcs still repeat those days, but they also mix in a lot more backstory as well.

Yes, they repeat the same days. The first two answer arcs "answer" a question arc in a non-literal way, while the last two are a bit different.

I finished Fata Morgana.

Definitely one of the better VNs I've read, really good pacing. I never felt bored or had the urge to skim at all which is a huge plus. Loved the story and the characters, and it delivered enough gut punches to really get to me but it didn't feel overtly contrived like a KEY work.

The only thing I don't get is. In the third door, when Maria is forced to clean the cellar she uncovers something in her own handwriting which scares her, but I don't recall ever seeing a scene of her past incarnation doing so, unless I accidentally skipped over it or something. Just seemed odd because it's the only detail that didn't get explained to me.

Some other thoughts on it. (big time spoilers) I actually really liked how despite Morgana on some level forgiving the three, she never will be able to truly forgive them. In alot of stuff that would be the 'feel good' moment where after hundreds of years of hatred she lets go and everyone is happy, but nope. Everyone knows that what they did can't ever fully be forgiven and that they have no place ever being her friend or being with her in any way, even Jacopo.

I also found myself really liking the art, there's a couple...odd sprites (particularly in the Rose Manor arc, and one of Maria's faces in the Pig Iron Manor arc) but otherwise I really enjoyed the uniqueness of it. If it used a bog standard anime style I think alot would have been lost.

Kinda funny though that Mell and Nellie from the first door look so...weird, but their past selves are much more aesthetically pleasing to look at. I guess the artist improved during production but didn't want to go back and redraw or something.

They did eventually redraw one character after deciding the early style wasn't good enough, but said character was a bit more important, so.

I've played it and gotten all endings. It's got some beautiful backgrounds (it takes place in Matsue, which is a real place in Shimane, Japan,) and some nice music, but I didn't really think the story was anything special, a bit underwhelming, despite a promising start and premise.

R07 tweeted a bit ago that we're getting When They Cry series 3 in 2017. Says it'll be separate from Umineko and Higurashi. I'm excited to see where he goes next and I'm curious what elements from the first two series will be carried over.

Just finished Steins;Gate 0 myself. There were some great parts, but I felt some of the new characters were hit or miss. Actually I was a little disappointed in its treatment of Amadeus itself. Since Amadeus Kurisu was essentially an antagonistic force in most routes. The parts with Okabe, Amadeus, Maho, and Leskinen were by a pretty significant margin the most interesting to me. The other new characters and their plotlines were less gripping. However, I did appreciate that the old cast almost all got good moments that expanded my understanding of their characters beyond just what was in the original game. Just getting more of that is already worth it. And Vega and Altair was a great final route; that's really where I felt the sequel was able to perfectly capture the spirit of the original. Definitely worth it, just less even in quality overall.

You should probably feel grateful that you played the Steam version.

On the subject of uncomfortable topics, I read the Dies Irae prologue on their Kickstarter page. The VN seems interesting, but... is it just me, or is the narrator noticeably portraying one side much more positively than the other in that video? To an almost alarming degree? And let me be clear here, that side isn't the Allies.

A quick search on the subject indicated that yes Dies Irae 'gushes' about Nazis a lot.

And now I lost what little interest I had in the game.

People want it because it was super hard to read so having read it was like a status symbol among VN nerds.

Apparently they take away the towel for one scene. Chapter 4 should be fine since I've not heard of anything like that being in it, though I'm finding that one a slog since I hate the protagonist of it.

I mean, the writing seems to be technically pretty good, and the text is all about how there's no good in war, only death? It's just the subtext and choice of adjectives that seems to be oddly spinning one side as glorious and blameless. I dunno; the scene is from the perspective of a German soldier, but it's a third person narrator so that doesn't really justify it.

I'm sure PS3 patches aren't going to be a problem for that; Sony have a reputation to maintain so console versions are going to be less skeevy rather than more.

I think NRVNQSR is referencing the original original sprites, which yeah were kind of problematic. PS3 set should be "fine" because it'd be from a console release.

Nazism plays only a small role past the prologue and the ethos is viewed very negatively. The Nazis are heavily villainized, in fact.

HerpicleOmnicron5

A story starting with the fall of Berlin from the German perspective probably isn't going to portray them negatively during that segment, which (if I'm reading this properly) sees them summoning the main villains of the story. If that is the case, it seems silly to think the story is pro-Nazi.

Dr. Video Games 0031
Jul 17, 2004

I believe the premise of the game has those characters being members of the german army who betray Nazi Germany and Hitler for their own gain, which allows the game to get away from nazism really quickly. It's my understanding that the game only rarely broaches the topic past the prologue and when it does, it's critical of the ethos.
