I'm not about to claim that Asian people are effectively white in North America but white people like me consider them to be.

And that's easily true for a lot of people who were born in America, grew up without strong bonds with their heritage. This easily happens to 3rd generations and beyond but can happen to first generations as well. It depends on their upbringing. You can find the rare case of some families growing up solely in china town and they retain their Chinese culture from some fossilized age. It's a interesting phenomenon but bringing back to this thread they tend to watch bad Chinese tv and god forbid have Rene Chang opinions.

The great idea behind countries with an immigration policy is that "you can be just as x as everyone else". Unfortunately the execution is still a big work in progress.

Luckily progress has been made and I have seen society being more pluralistic than before. My bar is pretty low and goony, she just needs to like playing video games

I'm wondering if it is because they are seen (in public opinion) as being successful and not involved in crime. I'm likely going to be moving to Alberta, so I'm hoping the redneck stereotype doesn't extend to outright racism. The worst my wife has gotten in Ontario is a few goony guys hitting on her with the opening line, "I really like Asian women", and one teen shouting, "me love you long time". (drat you Stanley Kubrick)

I think this is more about the different types of crime committed. Less smash and grab or home invasions and more white collar crimes like fraud, underhanded contracts and exploiting edge case issues in the law. Less outrage.

Let us English posted:

I've met enough racists Kiwis to know this is bullshit. NZ had a white immigration policy just like Australia and it shows in demographics today. It's harder to spot racism when the minority population is smaller. I grew up in Montana and I never heard anyone say a racist comment about or towards black people in my years of living there. Does that mean Montanans aren't overtly racist like people in the south? No, it just means there's no black people to be racist towards.

Canada is also crazy racist and not all that different than the US. Blistex highlighted rural Ontario for a reason. Canadians also have a habit of whitewashing their history when talking to Americans so as to maintain their inferiority complex. They do the same when discussing gun laws, health care, the metric system, education, immigration policy, idiotic heads of state, and lovely coffee chains.

The UK and the US are the only anglophone countries that make entertainment products documenting their racist history and sell them to the rest of the world. As such, people have the impression that both countries are plagued by racism to an exceptional degree.

I bloody live here.

I never said there wasn't institutional racism loving people over, I pointed out the inequalities aboriginals still suffer today and the lack of recognition or help to correct this. I said overt racism was low/er not that racism was. Do you know who shouted "Chink" at me over the years? Pacific islanders and Maori. I have no doubt at some point been screwed over by some racist of whatever colour, just not overt insults.

My personal sample size obviously small and I might be lucky as the people I spend my time around are good people. When I walk into a shop I do not expect to be treated differently and nor am I outside from the odd person surprised by my perfectly natural English(It's ever so mildly racist but if you are letting something like this get to you you have bigger personal social issues to deal with). The funny thing is that some upstanding white people pointed out that these incidences is racist when I thought nothing of it before.

I will not say this is the typical experience nor an outlier as I don't know. New Zealand is racist in many ways, but shouting go home you yellow fucks very, very low unless you're Winston Peters with his endless dog whistles.

In some ways the government is scared at being labelled a racist when it comes to immigration policy which is racist. Our refugee quota is poo poo, we favour western countries and rich people. It is also racist against the native population and disproportionally impacts aboriginals as Chinese students buy their way into universities and housing pushing out everyone else out of the market.

One of the few things we don't really have are illegal camps, but that is not from the lack of wanting such a thing. Our natural geography does not encourage such things and if we had the same inflow Australia has we would no doubt have them with all the attendant problems and awfulness.

On Oahu (can't say much about the other islands), the cultural identity for a lot of people is very strong since there is a majority of Asian and Pacific Islander. Many people there are mixed (like 5 different ethnicities is kinda common), so the hodge-podge people identify with whatever is the most prevalent for them or whatever grandparents were around (or whatever will help make them cooler with other people). My sister is half-white (from our dad), and she identifies as white even though she looks a billion percent Thai. It doesn't matter if people there are 3-4 mixed generations in Hawaii or the US, they still strongly identify as the Asian country of origin that they think is the one most important. There are a lot of people that get to Irish-American levels of self-identification about it, acting almost the exact same way about it. One of my friends had a mom from Hong Kong, so he claimed to be Chinese. When he went through his angsty teen years, he identified with the Chinese Cultural Revolution years and cosplayed as PLA dorks and had all sorts of Mao poo poo and shirts with the Chinese flag on it. The first time I went to China, I brought him a bunch of those garbage Communist souvenirs and he went apeshit over them.

Since Japanese are such a part of the tourism, the history, and the current culture on Oahu and the Islands, the worst parts of modern Japanese culture have infiltrated the youth there, where many people might be like 1/8th Japanese or something. Everyone wants to identify as Japanese, often taking the Mecca Tokyo pilgrimage at least once in their lives. Imagine Asian Weeaboos, but make it totally cool and acceptable and everywhere. I knew guys who wore those loving Naruto headbands in public, and people doing cosplay (because Japanese do it everywhere, right?) just because "I'm Japanese, too!!!". When they get older, they take on some other form of Japanese cultural something like mochi pounding or wearing kimonos on the bus. They make sure to imitate whatever mannerisms about Japanese they learned from anime and that Haruki Murakami novel they read.

The Chinese are weird, though. Many FOB or first generation refuse to mix in. There are tons of Chinese from HK, Taiwan, and Mainland, but they cling to their little groups, read their Chinese newspapers, force their kids to follow the filial system and grueling school ethic, and stay quiet when living among other ethinicities. Some do end up finding a way to fit in and making good for themselves, but it seems like many are scared and shy, unlike the other immigrants from around Asia that come in. I used to work a with a 2nd-gen Chinese woman that did the "roots" thing and shopped mostly in Chinatown and spoke Cantonese at home, but always had something bad to say about new Chinese immigrants and how cold they were. I guess they were still seeing everyone as "foreigner" and untrustworthy.
I used to work "downtown" (next to Chinatown) in HNL at a crappy retail job when I was young (long before Mainland tourist were a thing) and I remember whenever I would ask a Chinese person if they needed help they would scurry away without looking at me. I would do the same for other people and everyone would acknowledge my existence, except the Chinese. Well, the tables have turned now!!!!!!!!!!!!!11!!

On the other side, being a white kid/dude there, people always asked where my family was from. My dad's family is from Germany, and my mom is Native American, so they would be stuck in a limbo of deciding which one they wanted to identify me as. On one hand, the Natives can be friends with Hawaiians due to the history with the whites and invaders, but on the other hand Germany had Hitler and he was really powerful and stuff (Hitler was cool, I guess). So they would choose German most of the time (outside of asking me to do a rain dance here and there) and then make comments about my Germanity and asking if I spoke German at home (my dad was first gen, he lived there for a bit but doesn't give a poo poo). They'd be like "You're German! That explains your accent!" and I would be as confused as I could be, because I am American and speak with a standard Westcoast accent. They would identify me as German the same way they identified with Korean or something from great-grandfather's side.

It really is the mainland that looks like it got hosed up by the CCP. Does anyone remember that low budget "documentary" an adopted Chinese girl did about going back to China to meet the money grubbing mother who gave her up in the first place? She was adopted by an upper-middle class white family in the mid west, I think. There was something in the article about the mother almost immediately asking the adopting family for 10K and how the girl had to teach her Chinese brother that people in America take showers every day.

Also, drugs are sold in metric, rx's are prescribed in metric. Everyone knows metric more than they realize, on top of standard/imperial.

The fact that what is taught to students is conversions should tell you everything you need to know about the majority of American culture and how they perceive the metric system. Metric is for doing weird science stuff, like buying medicine and getting good grades in high school. Cars are still mpg and mph, ground beef and bowling balls are still in lbs, and no one talks about their dick size in cm. I'm not saying that Americans aren't capable of using the metric system, I'm saying that it just doesn't represent the system used in daily life and so when they see an article from Chinar about thick walls they're just going to nod and move on and not get out the calculators.

Just like how in some areas of China you say "Hello" by saying "have you eaten rice yet", or "have you made any money today", the video would tell tourists that Hong Kongers greet each other by saying "God Save the Queen".
