It's Kumamiko. I knew it wasn't going to be like the manga, but I didn't think it would be weird, agoraphobe-torture porn. Just mean-spirited and unfun.

The most disappointing this year for me I think would be the Phoenix Wright adaptation. It basically seemed like a glorified walk through instead of an anime. And it skipped 2 of the cases from the first 2 games it covered. I can understand skipping the second game's first case but the extra one from the first DS game is pretty in depth and has a palette swap char who grew up into her own char that's still used today.

Worst and Most disappointing for me is Garo:Crimson Moon. Boy was this show a let down. Bad writing, really weak animation, lame characters. Even the cgi,(which actually looked pretty good in Divine Flame)looks like poo poo. I guess the backgrounds look nice, but that's it. So much worse than Divine Flame in almost every way. And worst of all it's just plain boring. I don't know why I watched it all the way through. Still gonna watch the next season of anime Garo tho, please be good.

Berserk Berserk is easily one of my favourite manga. It's a masterpiece of the medium to me and beyond the shock aspects of it and its arguable over reliance on sexuaI violence, it's a human story of suffering and determination that everyone ought to experience at some point. It goes without saying for anyone familiar with the show that Berserk 2016 is the worst anime of the year. It's ugly as sin, sounds horrid. It did give us two fantastic Hirasawa tracks, but the promise that they're doing Millennium Falcon next year means we're a lock for worst anime next year too. In a year where two of my other favourite manga got utterly exquisite adaptations, Diamond is Unbreakable and Mob Psycho 100, it's really a shame that Berserk can't catch a break. I guess it means that there's more Hirasawa coming with next year's series, and Berserk's manga had a good run this year for once though. Kabaneri In a year where I enjoyed most of everything I watched but didn't watch mountains of anime, everything that wasn't in my top 5 list was either forgettable in the grand scheme, or struck enough sour notes to be memorably bad. I don't think Kabaneri is necessarily bad show overall, but it ended really dumb, was never spectacular at any point and I can't remember much else I'd put on a bad list. Also, it's just Attack on Titan on Trains which sounds better than the actual Attack on Titan honestly but it's extremely uncreative and derivative so points knocked off. Credit due to a great OP/ED song though, Aimer is great. Phoenix Wright It didn't use the game's soundtrack. Everything else was decidedly bad, but not using an amazing soundtrack you have access to is criminal. Honourable mentions: My Hero Academia for the utter garbage pacing but it was actually a pretty good anime overall. I'm not interested in a rewatch because of that pacing though, so that's why I'd say it's in bad side of the rankings. It's just hard to stomach a show going at snail pace when the manga is actually well recognised for being really fastly paced, without being rushed. Danganronpa was stupid and poo poo, but still better than Phoenix Wright and Kabaneri. Re:Zero was also stupid and but it wasn't a total poo poo anime. It was just in the running for anime I've seen this year that are among the worst. It's like Konosuba to me without the fun. Most avoided: ReLife because every time I tuned in to watch JoJo live as it aired in Japan, it was on during its run and I would mute the tab and swap over rather than watch it at all. It's not from this year, but at least Kuroshitsuji was fun to laugh at how bad it was. It might be good, it might not, I don't give a gently caress. The only show I really disliked that strongly was DAYS. And only the first season. The second season was pretty decent and it started being a normal sports anime. But man it did not give a good first impression. Any characters introduced existed only to say how awesome the MC was, the MC's only character trait was how unbelievably horrible he was while also immediately successful, and the show would swing wildly on how realistic it wanted to portray things. I kept watching because initially it was gorgeous and like the 5th episode where the team gets its manager was terrific. Doesn't ever do that again, but the second season has plenty of Actual Characters in it. You can even eventually tell the difference between all the team members. This is actually pretty hard because I liked where it got to but I def remember hating it at the start. World Trigger was filler garbage for a long time. I think there is actually a subtitle on the show. World Trigger: Filler Garbage. It's funny, the stuff immediately beforehand was just a by the numbers shonen tournament but I couldn't make it more than an episode or two into the filler before bailing. Had watched the show for a year to that point and just dropped it. I think it eventually went back to the actual storyline, but there's no way the show made any progress on the universe-hopping nonsense it was setting up, so whatever. Arslan Senki: Dust Storm Dance and to a lesser extent Shokugeki no Soma season 2 seemed kind of pointless to bring back and just go away after one cour. Arslan didn't even make it one cour. I didn't bother watching more than an episode or two because what is the loving point. Food Wars should be on forever. I think there were like 4 new episodes after it bothered doing the finale to the previous season? Please come back with more the both of you. 1. DAYS 2. World Trigger 3. Arslan/Shokugeki Most Avoided: TEEKYU. I WANT OUT.

Like I gave up on and was disappointed with Flying Witch but I couldn't call it a worst of... it was boring but did not get on my nerves. Just sort of mediocre. The only thing that actively annoyed me was Dagashi Kashi. You can be a boring SoL but you have to be either funny or beautifully made, and this was neither. the one character who got development also had nothing to do with the main plot. so, when the main plot started up again maki was just kinda there. i dunno, it was a very strange setup for what was always planned as a single cour show and i think it could have been great if the rest of the cast had gotten arcs too.

3. Dangan Ronpa 3. Technically two anime, but they both build the same story. The animation and voice acting were fine, but the writing was so dumb. One of the main characters is a sociopath with unclear intentions who murders his bff for stupid reasons and comes out of this... redeemed? It feels totally unearned to me. The murder mystery aspects of the games are almost totally dropped to turn this series into a mediocre battle shonen. The fights don't hurt to watch or anything, they're just sort of nothing. Also every og character death is a fakeout, and a bunch of other characters are brought back A-okay. That just feels not-dangan-ronpa to me. I think this series might have offended me more than the next two entries, but this is the only one that I felt made an effort, and some people really liked it, so it must have done something right. 2. Ace Attorney. It's not the worst thing ever, it's just super mediocre. Yeah, the animation is bad, but it's also just missing that heart that I feel with the games. The anime feels like a quick buck and not much else. This entry isn't higher because it's really lazy, but I didn't find it particularly offensive. 1. Berserk 2016. Why is it so hard for animation studios to nail Berserk? I mean, the manga is super detailed and totally isn't something easy to animate, but this series is animated at like 15 frames a second. The 3D models are lame, but they are far from the only problem, what with the camera swooping around and cutting everywhere making it a pain to keep track of where characters are. The animation is janky and unnatural. The sound design is hilarious. It's just not a good adaption, unfortunately. It's just such a shame to see Berserk continue to fumble as an anime. Maybe some day... Butt Ghost fucked around with this message at 02:20 on Dec 28, 2016 |

Macross Delta is the only show that I watched enough and also disliked enough that I'd feel like mentioning it in this thread. It started strong enough but the entire second half was spent spinning its wheels and basically nothing that is actually interesting about Macross was to be found anywhere. The mecha parts were boring and uninspired and the singing portions just became a point of frustration that never was as fun as those first few episodes promised.

Matoi Ryuko posted:luluco - cute but boring dropped after like 3 ep Luluco was kind of hit or miss for me, some parts were a+ (loved the klk episode in particular) and others just fell completely flat for me (lwa episode). Kind of the same way i felt about inferno cop: it helped that it was shorts, because even if a part is dull it's gone in like 3 minutes tops, but overall not enough hits to really knock it out of the park. but then, a lot of that is probably that I was never really taken in by the romance which was sort of the whole focus and all.

Even as someone who enjoyed Luluco, the Trigger Cinematic Universe aspect to it bothered me. I enjoyed the gags on KLK Planet but in retrospect they may not have needed the KLK setting to do those same things? LWA Planet added basically nothing and probably where I began to dislike that whole conceit. It just seemed like a kinda lame fan/self-indulgent thing that didn't add to the show.

Yeah, even though I put Luluco on my best anime list I did say that those parts felt really weak to me, beyond just me going " haha it's sex & violence with machspeed episode" for a second. It felt weirdly out of place compared to the start and end sections, though I didn't mind the Inferno cop episode.

Both within and outside the show they kinda established the connection between him an Over Justice early on, and he really just exists in the show as a good mentor character for Luluco. Other than his limited animation there didn't seem to be any Inferno Cop gags shoved in just because they could.

Izetta: Stank of bad writing from the start. Apparently it got worse later. I think people just stuck with it for the promise of lesbians. Kiznavier: Character focused drama that made me dislike each and every one of the characters. That's quite an accomplishment. Only kept up with it so long because it had one or two scenes that looked like it was going somewhere. Haha nope. Konosuba: I actually watched this one to the end. People kept describing it like some grand parody of dumb anime cliches, but 90% of the time it just was those cliches but with a wink and a nod. Self awareness by itself is just doing something dumb and announcing it. I only laughed like twice the whole show, which is pretty bad for a comedy. Bland and forgettable. Good ED though, deserved to follow a better show. Runners up: Netoge: Delusional schizophrenia is Moe. Re:Zero: Otaku themed Don Quixote fanfiction. 1. Big Order - I liked Mirai Nikki, but nothing about this was good. 2. Qualidea Code - this descended so quickly into incoherent nonsense that it was actually hilarious. I watched the whole thing and it unfortunately managed to climb back out of incoherent and funny into just stupid and bad. 3. Ange Vierge - I watched the first episode of this blind, and laughed really hard when suddenly it turned into bathhouse exposition for no reason at all. I watched a couple more episodes, and every one of them ended up back in the bath within about 3 minutes. Most avoided: Keijo!!!!!!!! Let's see here 1. Kiznaiver. Super pretty, and what looked like a fun cast at the beginning. Went nowhere, with the two most boring, most unlikable characters getting the main focus of the last few episodes. Horrid and pointless conclusion that delivered no actual conclusion to anything. Bad. Dumb. Poopy. Uuuuuuugh. 2. Mayoiga. First episode was kinda creepy, although everyone looked like a twelve-year old. It had the potential to be interesting and funny, and managed neither. I'm kinda impressed how utterly harmless the show was, in the end... I was hoping for something much more mean-spirited. Also, it kinda looked like garbage. I was hoping throughout that this was intentional, but... hm. Waste of time. 3. Re:Zero. I was prepared to drop this immediately, as it (obviously) reeked of wish fulfillment/harem crap, but the first few episodes with the time gimmick seemed interesting enough, despite the somewhat cringe-worthy MC and the assassin. Then the next arc with the maids started. And the little girl mage. Ooooooooh dear. Still gave it a chance, but I greatly disliked the new characters, the MC got even more annoying and dumb, and by the time of his "suicide" I honestly stopped caring about those idiots. At least I didn't follow this one as long as the other two... Most avoided: Berserk 2016. Berserk is probably my favorite comic, so of course I wanted a great adaption. Also helps that the Tower of Conviction arc is incredible and as gently caress. Then the first opinions started pouring in, and I decided to ignore this anime... Seemed to have been the best decision. Special Disappointment Price: Thunderbolt Fantasy. God, what a metal show. Fun scenes, a fun cast, intrigue and incredibly brazen standoffs. Also, PUPPETS! Despite the meandering dialogue, what's not to like? ...the ending, apparently. The show ended in a huge, drawn-out fart. Some might say it was appropriate for the characters involved; I think it was mostly an incredibly unsatisfying conclusion for some, and an outright waste of a plot for others (I'm looking at you, shrine girl & spear dude). Also, personally? I think the ending ruined what was by far the best character of the show, until then. You know who. Up-ended everything he was about and made him lame. Dammit. I was tempted to make this my number 1 worst anime just for the sheer disappointment with the finale, but it's just too good overall. I'll just keep this bitterness in my heart until I inevitably watch season 2. Go gently caress yourself 2016

1. Danganronpa 3 Danganronpa is a series I at one point enjoyed a lot. Even though I was down on the second game, there was enough stuff to make me enjoy the series still and maintain some optimism for the future. Now with subsequent releases I have basically grown to loathe everything about Danganronpa that isn't the first game. Danganronpa 3 is a culmination of the garbage infested muck the series has turned into. Nonsensical plot threads with unsatisfying resolutions, lovely characters that command sway of the story and its pace, bad action scenes in what was a loving closed room murder mystery series that are also badly animated, and some of the lamest grabs at pandering to people's affection for characters they are familiar with I've seen. There are entire scenes dedicated to brutally murdering teenagers in gruesome ways that would fit more with the Saw films than the sort of insanity DR had displayed up until to now at a cheap grab at drama and shocking the viewer. Every single lovely plot thread comes on to the ending which is nothing more than a cavalcade of trying to pander to fans of previous cast members and no proper resolution for anything that's happened. I feel like I genuinely got nothing from watching this show, which I can't even saw about other lovely anime I've watched. I mean gently caress, I watched so many bad Gundam shows this year and got more from Victory and Seed than I loving did this show. 2. Berserk Everyone's already said their piece about this show, so I'm not gonna say much about it other than it's loving abysmal to look at and the voice acting also kinda sucks too with a lot of really lame rear end performances, even Kenta Miyake who's been in everything this year managed to sound terrible. I didn't watch as much poo poo this year, thankfully. I'll have to try and make up for that next year though.

Big Order aka why the gently caress did I watch more than three episodes of this, let alone 8, aka two less than the end. it had an interesting enough idea that i wanted to give it a shot, but it somehow managed to be both dreary in how it was going about the rules to its superpowers, and yet still not making any sense very frequently nonetheless, so clever Code Geassery went out the window. but it didn't even manage to be a fun trainwreck, just a big rusty pile of trash slowly flopping over to one side, and slowly catching fire. lead's garbage, he pretty much outright starts wanting to gently caress his i forget if they're blood related sister (this is the incest show this year by the by), why the gently caress did that girl actually get pregnant from touching her ribbon and more importantly did they just toss the baby somewhere, was this supposed to be funny. for a split second, girl who controlled rocks was almost cool in a way! i mean she, you know, wasn't wearing anything but she was still sort of stylish and neat. and whoops now she's being a creepy pervert with everyone rip. i regret the time i spent watching this Nurse Witch Komugi-chan R just stopped being funny extremely fast. all it had going for it was being an ever so slightly absurdist magical girl show and aside from that meh who cares Bakuon basically lost me because yeah, numerous episodes in a row of really creepy and skeevy situations being treated as funny in an otherwise sort of silly show. you can't just follow up 'this girl was nearly violated by her teacher on an alcoholic benderr!' with 'and now this very girl is rubbing herself all over her bike suggestively isn't that hot!' bleh. the show just wasn't interesting enough for that to be a forgivable offense. Lime was good but that's really about it. MOST AVOIDED: GATE because all i hear of it is 'japanese revanchism' and 'sexual abuse of rabbitgirls' and poo poo like that so i didn't even approach the first season, much less imagine for a moment i might want to watch the second

Izetta for all the reasons people have listed already -- good premise but painfully sloppy execution. Dimension W was another show where I went "this has a cool premise" and watched 4 episodes and then everything just kind of stalled out. Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress was disappointing just because it started pretty strong but then turned into a pure Attack on Titan copy. My favorite shows of the year need to wait until flipflaps finishes airing, but the bad ones are long since dropped! worst: Kumamiko - This was incredibily disapointing and mean-spirited. I dropped it a few episodes in after a half episode straight of a grown woman beating on a child, and I'm very glad I did after hearing about the ending. Not what I want from a seemingly cute show about a girl and her bear friend, and not what I remember the manga being like. It was one of my most anticipated shows of its season, too bad: Haifuri - I appreciate the voice acting talent, and when it was just cute girls doing boat things it was fun, but the rats were dumb, and every time it attempted naval action it fell flat. I think I dropped it after the rat episode. Bakuon!! - Poorly animated, too much fanservice, and just all around OK at best. I lost track of it after the first few eps. Maybe I'll read the manga sometime, Sharky never wavered in his enthusiasm for it. dishonorable mentions: Izetta: The Last Witch - I dropped this a few eps in because it just wasn't holding my attention. It didn't seem bad, but the first episode got my hopes up. Alas. Myriad Colors Phantom World - I actually finished this one, and enjoyed it pretty much the whole way through. It oscillated between mediocre and super cute, but it really was just a waste of kyoani's talents. Better than Beyond the Boundary, at least. avoided: I'm changing my avoid vote to Magical Girl Raising Project, which I'd forgotten about 'til skimming the thread. I like magical girls, I don't want to see them die as the premise of a show. Yes_Cantaloupe fucked around with this message at 06:44 on Dec 29, 2016 |
