Bottom Liner posted:Of course that's all you would know it for I always thought "I read it for the articles" was bullshit to excuse looking at porn until I got a Playboy from I think 1967. Turns out the porn is an incredibly small part of the magazine (to the point that you have to hunt for it) and the majority is restaurant and movie reviews, short stories or serially published novels, letters to the editor, interviews, opinion pieces, and advertisements. Playboy was the biggest left-wing publication around for decades and serves as an excellent window into the issue's time period.

Well IIRC Hefner said in an interview that he had always wanted Playboy to be something like Vanity Fair - a popular culture and current affairs magazine that just happens to have some pictures of pretty people in it. That's why in the 50s and 60s he paid a lot for the writings of then-rising literary stars like John Updike, Doris Lessing, Joyce Carol Oates, Vladimir Nabokov, John le Carré, Kurt Vonnegut and Ray Bradbury. I think for the first twenty years of the magazine's life, Playboy has published the works of like four or five Nobel Prize laureates, and a dozen or so Pulitzer Prize winners. But basically since the mid-1970s circulation has been declining and the magazine kind of got side-tracked then trying to attract new readers through more and more nudity.

Got a 6-port Anker charger to clean up the charging area. Also, got a lock to practice picking on and it's a real doozy. Master 410 lock out/tag out lock. $9, 6 pins, all security drivers with standard key pins. Usually 5 spools and one serrated.

Does anyone know a good immersion tub for an anova sous vide cooker? I got one on christmas cause of this thread, and its amazing, but I'm using a normal pot with it and would like a bigger vat to be able to cook more food.

If you want a good laugh, read the Playboy Advisor through the years. I have a fiend who had a small collection of the magazine from the early 60s through the late 70s (until his garage flooded and the bulk of the collection was destroyed). I remember seeing a letter from the late 60s where a guy asked if he should offer to pay for a babysitter for a divorced woman he was dating who had a kid. Cut to the late 70s and a guy asking the best way to get his girlfriend interested in anal sex.

This is going to fall on dumb, deaf ears but Playboy has been a really good publication for authors who cannot get published elsewhere. They have a long history of taking chances on controversial articles and stories. Hell, there was a time that the only way you could get a sci-fi story published in the mainstream was through Playboy.

Yeah, I remember marvelling at the little fine print in my high school's copy of Dune saying portions had been published in Playboy. I have really liked some of the stuff that I have seen from them lately, too, a subscription does not sound like a bad idea.

Mr. F! posted:Does anyone know a good immersion tub for an anova sous vide cooker? Any kind of polycarbonate container is great. Polycarbonate is incredibly tough, temperature resistant, and insulates fairly well, and you can buy any size at a restaurant supply store. For content, bought a new Miele vacuum cleaner: Incredibly quiet, great suction, solid feel, great attachment selection--absolutely loving it. Only cons are the small bag size and I feel like the power switch isn't as durable as the rest of the unit. Cleans better than both the dyson uprights at work and the kenmore and sanitaire canister vacuums I previously owned. Much quieter and more manueverable than the Kirby Omega Heritage my parents gave me, but I think the Kirby cleans carpets better with the powered brush, and the Kirby maybe has more suction. Not quite as good as the whole house vacuum system my parents have, but it's so much easier not to deal with than the bulky hoses, and it's nearly as quiet. Highly recommend one if you're in the market for a combination carpet/bare floor vacuum.
