The Norris Smythe Division Preview

[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] Well We're here to preview the Norris Smith Division, Sans ClangBang(works in media analytics and its EOY) and Fairgame(Being a good husband or some poo poo) ,,,,,and feast mode is coughing up a lung so we'll be doing this as a chat instead of a proper preview
[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] in other words you fuckers are not helping me disprove the "alt account" accusations
I helping
[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] and you get a gold star
[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] and maybe another Kevin Brown
ooo goodie

THE TEAMS

Akabira Killer Mikes
Aperture platoon corp scientists (Formerly known as Danno Macks Roster/The RCMP)
Kobe Crows
South Bolton Eazy Ws

[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] Anyways, lets get into the teams of this division
[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] First up theres the Easy Ws, defending champions and winner of several pennants
Sounds like they are living up to the name
[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] they are owed by foreverbwfc(somewhat absentee) and caretaker CFBalla(kinda absentee)
(shots fired?)
Either way, fascinating
[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] if you look at them they are a team that seems to have been built on feel rather than gimmick, which I find weird
[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] but apparently it works
Yeah not exactly a team where the players names jump out at you
[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] A team that wont die and wont win a championship
[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] SAD
[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] LIKE a DOG
Sp rotation has got to be their strength, no?
[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] Once you get past Cy And Pete not so much
What about custom character mcgee?
(wanderlei bolton)
[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] kinda random
[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] Anyways next up is the Akabira Killer Mikes
[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] I dont understand this teams name
Killer mike is a wrapper
[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] yeah but Akabira?
Sounds arab
[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] Its in Japan
[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] They've dominated the sub par multiple times and been middling in the super league
[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] the response to this is that they traded away a ton of talent to try and go gimmick and that doesnt seem likely to work
[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] Next up we have the Kobe Crows a team that I honestly do not understand how they are so consistently bad
[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] they should win it all
Yeah they look pretty good on paper
[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] They've been around forever and won a bunch of tag titles
[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] but they get poo poo like "george brett commits a million errors"
well I know the answer but you're not gonna like it......
[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] uh oh,,,,
Super league is rigged
Baseball mogul was an inside job
[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] probably
[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] Anyways the final team is the Aperture Scientists, you know the guys you spent 3/4 of last season trolling even though you had no right to win more than 65 games with
Dem bois show no mercy, its true
[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] next time try not to kill Trevor Hoffman and then blow 22 saves
Ugh, yes that was a disaster
but speaking of the scientists, holy platoons batman
[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] Fun fact: scientists can also be referred to now as "the artist formerly known as danno mack" since they traded Ruth and Gibson for like 3/4 of the (very successful) RCMP roster
I'd of make that trade

Catcher:
(AKA)1938 BIll Dickey/1959 Smoky Burgess
(APE)1925 Gabby Hartnett/1979 Ted Simmons
(KOB) ????Josh Gibson / 1977 Johnny Bench
(SBW) 1982 Ted Simmons /Ivan Rodriguez(PC?)

lol all platoons
[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] I'm just gonna say Gibson is #1 and move to debating 2-4
was not expecting that
[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] with the exception of Smoky all these guys could legit start so it makes sense to platoon them
agreed, I think harnett/simmons is #2, looking at their stats now
[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] Hartnett is rad
[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] I think simmons/Irod is #4 if only because Bill Dickey is kinda really good
[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] not sure he was worth the Yogi Berra it cost to get him though
yeah I agree Dickey is good, simmons/Irod isnt much worse though
pretty solid position across the board
[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] I'm feeling very good about my decision to NOT enter this division
[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] someday the crows are going to stop sucking and I don't want to be near them when it happens
yeah no poo poo I don't want to play with the big boys

First Base:
(AKA)1922 George Sisler
(APE) 1932 Lou Gehrig/ 1929 Jimmie Foxx
(KOB) 1948 Stan Musial
(SBW) 1999 John Olerud

[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] Great now lets Talk about the 1B in this division
[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] Seems like a solid bunch with an utterly unnecessary platoon by the scientists
yeah I was gonna say why platoon for Gherig
[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] how would you rank them 1-4
last is definitely olerud
[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] I dont get the love he gets in SL
unless mogul thinks hes jesus
[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] MentholMoose does but thats about it
[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] I think Musial is the clear #1
yeah, gherig 2?
[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] Gehrig might be better but the platoon with Foxx seems like a net negative to me
I agree
It's stupid
[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] platooning is an offense against god and man

Second Base:
(AKA) 1934 Charlie Gehringer
(APE) 1977 Joe Morgan/1920 Rogers Hornsby
(KOB) 1927 Frankie Frisch
(SBW) 1986 Lou Whitaker
[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] Anyways second basemen
Sisler #3 then
[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] I am deeply jealous of all 2B in this division
yeah wtf crazy strong for 2b
[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] I have a man crush on Gehringer so he gets the top nod to me
[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] Whitaker should be in the Hall of Fame DAMMIT
yeah looking at his baseball ref page he seems to have the numers
*numbers
maybe he was an rear end in a top hat
[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] he played in an era before people really understood defensive metrics
Also Joe Morgan's career BA is way lower than I expected
but also jesus he played for forever
[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] He's platooned with Hornsby (Horny for Hornsby!)
[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] which I guess is because while Hornsby is one of the best bats he has the old timey glove problem
Yeah that makes sense, looking at hitting I was like why the gently caress would you platoon him with Morgan
[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] you platoon him because you have too much talent and want to use every player you can
[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] Anyways I guess Frisch comes in last but not really an indictment of the Crows as mush as holy poo poo this is a good crop
what a problem that must be!
[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] if dem bois perform like everyone expects you'll at least get to draft hornsby level talent
Yeah Frisch is a guy I don't know much about but I like his numbers, speedy, good average, good OBP
I try to ignore the haters
[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] you trolled them all once
[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] do it again

Third Base:
(AKA) 1986 Wade Boggs
(APE)1952 George Kell
(KOB) 1980 George Brett
(SBW) 2004 Scott Rolen
[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] do you wanna do 3B or SS next?
3B is good
[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] So Wade Boggs
is good
[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] Quaker traded a ton o poo poo for him
[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] a Lou Gehrig, a Trevor Hoffman
[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] and more, I think
wat
questionable
[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] so if you look at Akabira stadium they seem to be trying to jack up strikeouts and suppress dingers in the hopes good contact hitters can save them
[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] I still say Boggs isn't worth that haul though
Yeah I'm in agreement about that, still seems like crazy over pay
[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] for reasons we can talk about later I feel like the Killer Mikes only got 3/4 through their gimmick renovation
Also just want to point out 3B in this division has a one of these things is not like the other vibe (cough Scott Rolen cough)
[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] lol
[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] they just keep on rolen rolen rolen
[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] George Brett is normally rad and should bounce back from his efforts to murder Hulka Matt last season
[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] George Kell has a great glove and not much else I can discern
Yeah Kell's bat is lacking but a wizard in the field
[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] is this the first non platoon from Aperture today?
yep
[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] weird
in a spot where a bat platoon would be useful
lol

Shortstop:
(AKA) 1940 Arky Vaughn
(APE)1958 Ernie Banks
(KOB) 1987 Alan Trammell
(SBW) 1991 Cal Ripken
[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] Onward to Shortstops!
[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] Man, this group feels like the 2B in terms of quality
agreed
[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] Arky Vaughn probably gets the nod from me since he is one of the only lefty SS with a good bat in history
Know very little about Arky Vaughn but I agree, I like his stats
also the name Arky is cool I guess
[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] Ernie Banks is prime and a major improvement on Vizquel/Larkin that the scientists trotted out for years
[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] both Trammel and Ripken have kinda anemic bats but I guess I'd rank Trammel higher
[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] you?
If I had to pick between the two I would go Ripken but I'm a fanboy
[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] you would be mr "I was at the streak breaking game"
but yeah Trammel's bat is probably better, slightly less power
yes that is me, Cal Ripken Jr forever
[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] Trammel is a necessary sacrifice you make to turn Double plays and not much else

Left Field:

(AKA) 1902 Joe Kelley/1922 Kiki Cuyler
(APE)1925 Goose Goslin/ 1970 Dick Allen
(KOB) 1992 Rickey Henderson
(SBW) 1929 Al Simmons

[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] so Left field
yeah again, pretty strong
[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] full disclosure,I may have accidentally age bugged Rickey Henderson
[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] as I kinda umm rostered a 42 year old version
ooo
you a bad, bad man
[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] the crows have a stolen hank aaron on the bench they can deal
holy moly aaron on the bench is the definition of depth
[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] I think I go (1) Simmons (2)Kelly/Cuyler (3) Henderson (4) Goslin
I think that order is fair, I might put henderson above kelly/cuyler but thats more of a gut feeling

Center Field:
(AKA) 1955 Richie Ashburn / 20 Mike Trout
(APE) 1924 Tris Speaker/1929 Al Simmons
(KOB) Cool Papa Bell / 1956 Mickey MantleTin
(SBW) 1902 Ed Delahanty

[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] CENTER FIELD!
[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] so gotta ask, if Quaker is going for high strikeouts, why the gently caress is Mike Trout in his starting lineup?
[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] the point is for the OTHER GUY to strike out
lol
ok so I assume speaker/simmons platoon is unanimous #1
[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] oh look , its another platoon from the scientists!
[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] Yeah
[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] that speaker is 36
[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] so he plays like a god
yeah thats a deadly combo
[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] but needs a break to change out his dentures and get a new set of depends
yeah and cant do much better than simmons there
[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] man, Danno really gave up the farm in that trade
[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] who do you put at #2?
probably bell/mantle
[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] I can see that
though I didnt know anything about delahanty but love his numbers
[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] I rank Asburn /trout last as mogul hates trout somewhat and trout is absolutely he wrong guy for the Akabira Bowl

Right Field:
(AKA) 1909 Ty Cobb
(APE) 1959 Hank Aaron
(KOB) 1918 Babe Ruth
(SBW) 1926 Babe Ruth

[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] RIGHT FIELD!
[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] seems shockingly easy to tank
[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] *rank
lol right
[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] (1)Older Ruth
[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] (2) Younger Ruth
[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] (3) Ty Cobb -who should be playing CF
[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] (4) Aaron
again, an outfield where aaron is the weakest means gently caress this division is so stacked
also lol good call, why the gently caress isnt cobb in CF over ashburn/trout
[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] in fairness Aaron isn't normally a 3.7 Owar guy for most owners
hehehe

Designated Hitter:
(AKA) 1921 Harry Heilmann
(APE) 1895 Jessse Burkett/1932 Lou Gehrig
(KOB) 1956 Mickey Mantle / Josh Gibson
(SBW) 1961 Duke Snider / 2008 Carlos Beltran
[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] DESIGNATED HITTER!
oh wow nearly forgot what that was
[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] DH or the baseball palace?
[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] Anyways The Burkett Gehrig platoon is rad
[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] even if Gehrig should really be full time 1B
[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] with Foxx as the DH vs LHP
DH, but yeah burkett/gherig #1
Mantle/gibson #2?
[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] I'd put Heilmann ahead as Mantle has a bit of a K problem
I can dig it

Rotation
(AKA) 1902 Rube Waddell, 1932 Hilton Smith(CUSTOM),1911 Smokey Jo Williams(CUSTOM), 1971 Tom Seaver,2016 Felix Hernandez
(APE) 1933 (CUSTOM) Satchel Paige/1909 Rube Waddell/1929 Dizzy Dean/1971 Juan Marichal/1907 Deacon Phillipe
(KOB)- 1997 Pedro Martinez/1902 Cy Young /2004 Pedro Martinez/1905 Noodles Hahn/1970 Bob Gibson
(SBW) 1902 Cy Young/ 1913 Pete Alexander/1978 Steve Carlton/ 1992 Jack McDowell/Wanderlei Bolton(Custom)
[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] Onto the Rotation!
[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] I'd open up here with I think Akabiras rotation is good but doesnt quite fit its stadium
[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] Quaker has strikeouts and dimensions jacked up (helps power pitchers)
[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] but doesnt have a power heavy rotation
yeah not sure why do that
[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] to counter this he has errors down low
[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] which while helping his deadballers seems designed to suppress all offense
[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] Akabira Bowl-most 1-0 games this side of Moon Child O-3
[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] The Ws seem to have the worstest rotation to me
[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] in that the bottom half is,,,,underwhelming
yeah
scientists and crows are the best
[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] the scientists rotation scares me
also TIL there is a person names Noodles
*was
[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] Noodles Hahn is real
[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] well was
If I have a kid im gonna name it noodles
[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] he's been dead since 1960
RIP
[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] one of the few great lefty deadballers
Never Forget
[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] , I forgot his arm fell off at age 25 because LOL medicine in 1904
"medicine"
[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] when doctors would pull a tooth to treat elbow pain
(COCAINE)
Hey that logic adds up
Because then you are most concerned about mouth pain, elbow pain problem solved!
[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] statements like that help me understand your team's oh poo poo waddup philosophy

Bullpen:
(AKA) 1993 Trevor Hoffman/ 1987 Tom Henke/ 2008 Joakim Soria/ 1920 Bill Sherdel/ 1903 Red Donahue(MR)/1918 Carl Mays(MR) /2016 Jake Arrietta
(APE) Billy Wagner/Robb Nen/Robb Nen/Mike Adams/Larry Andersen/Warren Spahn
(KOB) 1976 Bert Blyleven/2010 David Roberston/1997 Ugueth Urbina/1990 Lee Smith/1984 Goose Gossage/2004 Mike Timlin
(SBW) 1990 Rob Dibble / Eri Yoshida / 2015 Aaron Loup / 2004 Keith Foulke / 1988 John Franco / 1981 Steve Carlton

[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] Anyways onto the relievers
I apparently know nothing about relievers
[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] in fairness your pen was acceptable in the EC
[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] at least compared to your leads the league in dingers rotation
Thats what we strive for here at Dat Bois enterprises, acceptable
[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] Akabira is running a 7 man pen with multiple dead ballers in MR roles for some reason
Yeah I was gonna ask if that makes any sense
[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] I dont get it
because I honestly dont have a clue
[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] but hey Quaker has survived a long time
Yeah I'm just a simple meme-baller, what do I know?
[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] I think the scientists have the best bullpen, maybe
[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] Robb Nenn can be terrifying
[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] Crows and Ws seem like weak spots
[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] and Akabira's could be the best in the division if they only trotted out Hoffman/Henke/Soria
I can get on board with all that

Bench:

(AKA) 1956 Jackie Robinson + Platoon buddies
(APE) PLATOOOOONS!!!!!!!
(KOB) 1960 Hank Aaron/2010 Dustin Pedroia/1940 Luke Appling/1974 Pete Rose/Platoon Partners
(SBW) 2006 Ivan Rodriguez / 2008 Ichiro Suzuki / 2003 St. Mark Bellhorn / 2007 Adam Dunn, The Chosen Dunn / Platoon Partner (1)

[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] So, who wins this division?
I mean I feel like the Scientists should…
but I dont know
[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] agreed
[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] I mean they won a sub par division last year
Crows are decently balanced as well
[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] so the curse of CraigK is probably broken
Id say two horse race between crows and scientists, but again I'm a moron
[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] Everyone is stupid
SAD
[timg]http://tinyurl.com/z8ntcqj][/timg] I mean we play in a loving fake baseball league
BAD

also i'll platoon george kell when i can pry stan hack from kw0134's hands

also lou whitaker's not in the hall because if you're a Hall Of Fame Voter in the 1990s you see his mediocre batting average and the lack of RBIs and go "pbbt, THAT'S not a hall of famer" before gently caressing your Jim Rice card and open palm slammin the "HELL YEAH I WANT HIM IN" part of your ballot

To keep the pattern of me, Beet, and Pander winning a title going, I guess the W's should try again this year?

W's stadium I'm sure has been the same for 20 seasons.

BIG BICEPS SHOHEI

The preview is going to be posted... REAL SOON.

Sep 16, 2009

Yeah, I just made that shot. :smug:

- I DON’T RECYCLE IMAGES FOR DIVISION PREVIEWS, NO SIREE!

- That’s an extremely good header image, HulkaMatt.

- Thanks I just made it today, obviously!!! Also we did this division last time! So let...us...RECAP:

pre:
Memento Mori W L GB RS RA Postseason Hulka Balla
Slaughterhouse Nine 90 72 -- 782 722 Lost SLDS (3-1) 2nd 1st
Mr. Burns Zephyrs 86 76 04 728 688 Lost DLWC (1-0) 3rd 3rd
Detroit Wolverines 79 83 11 701 741 -- 1st 2nd
Brookings Dinosaurs 76 86 14 786 784 -- 4th 4th
The Dinos died like we both predicted. Burns Zephyrs made a stronger push for the division title then we both thought, and ACTUALLY MADE THE POSTSEASON. The Nine won the division like Balla predicted. If the Wolverines didn’t disappoint you, you would have gotten them all right Balla!

- I owned this division. I understand this division. The Wolverines disappointing was within the realm of possibility I was considering. I just didn’t expect this level of disappointment.

- Joining the Memento Mori division in the place of the Dinos this season are the Innsmouth Lookers, managed by DivineCoffeeBinge! They have a scary logo. Let’s go over all the players in this division and see how they stack!

Starting Pitcher #1

1.) 1895 [28] Cy Young <R> (CMB)
2.) 1902 [25] Rube Waddell <L> (SLU)
3.) 1976 [31] Tom Seaver <R> (INN)
4.) 1910 [43] Cy Young <R> (DEX)

- A young Cy Young is probably pretty good, I would think at least.

- Cy Young...a good pitcher. Whodathunkit?

- This Rube Waddell guy is also kinda good, I think. I don’t know much about Rube.

- Rube...also good.

- Tom Seaver is kind of a wildcard in the Super League I think???

- He shouldn’t be, but this is the Super League. At any rate, he shouldn’t blow up on you.

- He’ll give you an ERA between 3 and 5!!! Last, we got the Ancient Cy Young, who could very well do much better than Tom Seaver - but he’s OOOOOOOOLD. Thus he gets the last spot.

- He will disintegrate into dust by July, most likely.

Starting Pitcher #2

1.) 1861 [20] Jim Creighton <R> (CMB)
2.) 1965 [27] Juan Marichal <R> (SLU)
3.) 2008 [24] Zack Greinke <R> (INN)
4.) 1909 [32] Bill Donovan <R> (DEX)

- In the back of my mind last season I thought Jim Creighton had a chance of being real bad. Like Candy Cummings on the WINNERS. I was wrong. Jim Creighton was really loving good, and slam dunks his way into a number one spot.

- Jim Creighton doing well is no surprise. Dude was probably the first “good” pitcher in major league history.
- Meanwhile, below that is Juan Marichal - who should do real well! He has the last 2 years for Monicro at least.

- Juan Marichal attacked a guy with a bat, which is all I’ll remember him for ever. That Zack Greinke contract is pretty bad in retrospect, huh?

- SHOULD HAVE STAYED WITH THE DODGERS!!!!!!!! I thought mistakes might have been made here, but nope. A Zack Greinke as somebodies #2 pitcher. That’s crazy. I don’t think he’s the worst on the list either? I guess you can go either way with 3 and 4.

- Bill Donovan...eh.

-

Starting Pitcher #3

1.) 1888 [28] Monte Ward <R> (SLU)
2.) 1906 [29] Mordecai Brown <R> (CMB)
3.) 2007 [35] Pedro Martinez <R> (DEX)
4.) 1977 [30] Nolan Ryan <R> (INN)

- Monte Ward had a 3.67 ERA last season for the Nine. The guy with 3 fingers had an ERA over 6 in a small sample size. I’m putting Ward at #1. SORRY!!!

- Small sample size, indeed. Three finger owns and dominated the league despite a “disability” and should own the top spot. HulkaMatt is wrong here.

- I disagree, but OK!!! Despite being old, Pedro Martinez has done extremely well for the Detroit Wolverines the last few seasons. Enough that I personally believe he should be over a 30 year old Nolan Ryan.

- He’s old, but he’s definitely more consistent than Nolan Ryan, who walked a lot more people.

- Fun Fact: This loving 35 year old Pedro had a better ERA than BOTH OF MY PEDROS LAST SEASON. gently caress!!!

- Owned bich.

Starting Pitcher #4

1.) 1902 [26] Eddie Plank <L> (SLU)
2.) 1909 [34] Jack Powell <R> (CMB)
3.) 1991 [28] Roger Clemens <R> (INN)
4.) 1991 [27] Randy Johnson <L> (DEX)

- Young Plank! He’ll probably do really well AND not get injured!

- Plank is someone that I feel should always do better than he does in the Super League. Having a prime Plank at SP4 though really should scare the rest of the division in how strong the Nine’s rotation is.

- We put Jack Powell at #2. He’s done really well for the Panderers, but lots of players that do good for the Panderers are BAD EVERYWHERE ELSE. I’m not sure if Kensei will get the same results.

- Pander can get the best out of players. He knows BBM well. At any rate, I just do not trust Roger Clemens and Randy Johnson. They can both have better seasons than Jack Powell, but will probably not. Especially since neither are pitching for the Panderers here.

- The Panderers are good and would win this division.

Starting Pitcher #5

1.) 1906 [26] Frank Smith <R> (SLU)
2.) 1988 [22] Greg Maddux <R> (CMB)
3.) 2013 [24] Stephen Strasburg <R> (DEX)
4.) 1977 [31] Jim Palmer <R> (INN)

- Frank Smith. FRANK SMITH! Frank smith. He actually had a slightly below average season, but he’ll give you an ERA of like… 4.00. Which is pretty OK for the 5th spot, I guess?

- Frank Smith. Monicro’s secret lover. No one knows this, but it’s the truth. At any rate, he’ll probably perform better than a young Maddux, a plague-ridden Strasburg, and a Jim Palmer straight.

- Some really good rotations overall from the Nine & Burnseses, who took the #1 and #2 spot for all of the SP. Scary!

Bullpen

1.) 1902 [29] Red Donahue <R> / 1983 [30] Dan Quisenberry <R> / 2013 [23] Jeurys Familia <R> / 1982 [24] Tom Henke <R> / 2013 [25] Aroldis Chapman <L> / 2016 [28] Dellin Betances <R> (CMB)
2.) 2013 [30] Justin Verlander <R> / 1984 [30] Frank Tanana <L> / 2012 [24] Aroldis Chapman <L> / 1983 [27] Jeff Reardon <R> 2012 [27] David Robertson <R> / 1984 [26] Tom Henke <R> / 1987 [29] Lee Smith <R> (DEX)
3.) 1970 [31] Jim Kaat <L> / 1968 [27] Luis Tiant <R> / 1974 [34] Bill Hands <R> / 1989 [36] Larry Andersen <R> / 1977 [22] Dennis Eckersley <R> / 1984 [31] Larry Andersen <R> (SLU)
4.) 1964 [28] Bob Veale <L> / 1977 [29] Dave LaRoche <L> / 1977 [28] Bill Campbell <R> / 1991 [35] Jeff Reardon <R> / 1995 [35] Todd Worrell <R> / 1977 [22] Dennis Eckersley <R> (INN)

- The modern day relievers are just going to have better stats than older relievers because of what constituted a “reliever” back then was “lovely starter.” Plus with how many more strikeouts there have been recently from relievers, and it’s a good call to stock up 2010s RPs

- I think Kensei takes the top spot here easily. After that… Detroit. Chapman. Robertson. Henke. Lee Smith. Good names. The Lookers have some weird names here and I don’t trust Eck, so the Nine get put above them.

Bench

1.) 1989 [28] Mickey Tettleton <S> / 1963 [23] Carl Yastrzemski <L> / 1996 [20] Alex Rodriguez <R> / 1942 [23] Johnny Pesky <L> / 1944 [35] Mel Ott <L> / 1933 [32] Goose Goslin <L> (DEX)
2.) 1977 [26] Brian Downing <R> / 1910 [35] Nap Lajoie <R> / 1954 [23] Harvey Kuenn <R> / 1991 [28] Bobby Bonilla <S> / 1995 [25] Ken Griffey Jr. <L> / 2B Platoon Partner (SLU)
3.) 1983 [27] Lance Parrish <R> / 2013 [28] Daniel Murphy <L> / 1983 [31] Fred Lynn <L> / 1B Platoon Partner / 3B Platoon Partner / RF Platoon Partner (CMB)
4.) 1977 [29] Carlton Fisk <R> / 1977 [22] Willie Randolph <R> / 1991 [35] Jack Clark <R> / 1964 [24] Willie Stargell <L> / 1991 [26] Ellis Burks <R> / 1977 [37] Carl Yastrzemski <L> (INN)

Platoon Partner notes:

SLU:
2B 1970 Joe Morgan (26) and 1942 Bobby Doerr (24)

CMB:
BENCH VS. RHP: 1881 Cap Anson (29), 1930 Pie Traynor (31), 1983 Robin Yount (23)
BENCH VS. LHP: 1998 John Olerud (29), 1983 George Brett (30), 1902 Honus Wagner (28)

- I always judge benches by how I’d feel if I HAD to replace a player and use them as a starter due to horrible injuries (Well, duh).

- You never judge benches! In fact, the only reason I have a bench here is because Pander will wring my neck and kill me if I didn’t!

- Well the theory is to have no one ever injured so they are pointless. That is, unless you use platoons effectively.

- I guess Kensei's bench first???

- We listed them, ergo Pander can’t be mad.

- I GUESS!!!

- Okay in all seriousness, I think Detroit has the strongest bench, because if they all roll well, you could reasonably start 5 of those players. I like Monicro’s next because of its versatility, and the players themselves aren’t that garbage. Next, Kensei, because the platoons are good, even though I hate how they are listed. Sorry DivineCoffeeBinge.

- I also think Detroit has a good bench. Lots of good names. Part of me feels like you can go either way with 2 and 3. Honus Wagner and George Brett sometimes being on your bench is kind of crazy??? But they’re the big spoon so they won’t be on the bench a ton. DCB has some players I like, including Willie Randolph! I would really like it if you would trade that Willie Randolph to me by seasons end buddy. PLEASE! I LOVE HIM!!!

Catcher

1.) ???? [??] Yog-Sothoth <?> (INN)
2.) 1929 [26] Mickey Cochrane <L> (SLU)
3.) 1934 [31] Mickey Cochrane <L> (DEX)
4.) 1983 [33] Ted Simmons <S> (CMB)

- I spoke with Red about this category

- Sog-Yothoth. He sees all, so he must be pretty good at catching people on the bases and drawing walks.

- Well hold on a second, are we sure he’s a good baseball catcher???

- He has the tools.

- Smasher described this… THING!!! As such: “the unknowable backstop whose framing skills are such that to look on them is to be driven mad”. What do you think this means??? I honestly don’t know. What if it’s just really terrible at defense?!

- At any rate, Mickey Cochrane is extremely good at getting on base, and both are better ages than Ted Simmons, who I’m on record as saying is cool.

- Ted Simmons is OK. He’s not in the league of Mickey Cochrane and Cthulhu’s grandpappy.

- I wasn’t aware that Yog was Cthulhu’s relative. Too many Australians in this league I tell ya what.

First Base

1.) 2007 [27] Albert Pujols <R> (SLU)
2.) 1934 [26] Jimmie Foxx <R> (DEX)
3.) 1977 [24] George Brett <L> (INN)
4.) 1998 [29] John Olerud <L> / 1881 [29] Cap Anson <R> (CMB)

- ALBERT PUJOLS.

- Pujols is the greatest baseball player I’ve ever seen in person. When I was a kid, he was the only player who I thought would hit a dinger every single at-bat. He’s amazing.

- Balla!! Did you see I got an autographed pre rookie card of Albert Pujols???

- I am very jealous yes.

- OH YEAH BABY. Coming in next is a young Jimmie Foxx, and I mean - that’s a real good name to have at 1st base. He’ll do good.

- Only reason I would ever put Brett at 1B is if you have a god at 3B. And, well, they have Boggs, so.

- Brett tried to destroy me last season, therefore I am now in the camp that Boggs is #1 for 3B.

- George Brett won me a title. Also lmao George Brett’s 2 best seasons were both for the Kernels (via SLWAR)

- HEY GEORGE GET YOUR poo poo TOGETHER FOR ME BUDDY!!! Coming up last, it’s fuckin JOHN OLERUD who the Super League has completely turned on, and a prime Cap Anson. These names are not as good as the ones above. Sorry Kensei!

Second Base

1.) 1970 [26] Joe Morgan <L> / 1942 [24] Bobby Doerr <R> (SLU)
2.) 1977 [31] Rod Carew <L> (INN)
3.) 1905 [30] Nap Lajoie <R> (CMB)
4.) 2009 [26] Robinson Cano <R> (DEX)

- Joe Morgan #1! Everyone else, hock ptooey!

- Ew, don’t spit HulkaMatt. Do you know what’s in your saliva? Anyway, Joe Morgan is an amazing second baseman, even if he doesn’t want you to believe that himself. I took Carew over Lajoie simply for personal preference; both high contact 2B/1B with meh defense, though I think Carew’s is slightly better. Cano is cool, but he’s also a modern hitter who will strike out a lot.

- INTERESTING NOTE: 31 year old Rod Carew, the MVP who bat .388/.449/.570 will be the OLDEST Rod Carew in SL history. That’s kinda weird.

- No one wants to take the early 80s Angels teams, and honestly, can you blame them?

- Good point. I agree with Balla. Go either way you want for 2 & 3, but it’s not like Carew should do worse than Lajoie in contact, and he’s probably a better defender. I still have a soft spot for Cano, and want him to do better in the Super League!!!

Third Base

1.) 1991 [33] Wade Boggs <L> (INN)
2.) 1983 [30] George Brett <L> / 1930 [31] Pie Traynor <R> (CMB)
3.) 1895 [22] John McGraw <L> (DEX)
4.) 1952 [29] George Kell <R> (SLU)

- Wade Boggs. The best 3B you can get in the SL minus created players. Have we had a created 3B? Someone should get on that. Anyway, Brett is also really good, as stated previously. Still like Boggs more. John McGraw is young, but has a really good chance at OBPing .400 and stealing 60 bases, so you could do much much worse. George Kell is boring.

- Don’t have really anything to say about 1 and 2 that hasn’t already been said. John McGraw will probably be garbage on defense, but HE WILL GET ON BASE AND STEAL A LOT AND HE’S WAY MORE INTERESTING THAN ONE OF THE 10 GEORGE KELLS. Smasher recently has gone out of the way to get Ruths out of the SL so they’re not so abundant. Perhaps that should be done for George Kell.

Shortstop

1.) XXXX [XX[ AndROiD <R> (CMB)
2.) 1960 [29] Ernie Banks <R> (INN)
3.) 1986 [28] Alan Trammell <R> (DEX)
4.) 1964 [33] Ernie Banks <R> (SLU)

- I like all of these guys.

- Weird. A list of SL starters where one of the players isn’t a pre-1960s player with much more BBs than Ks. I like it. AndROiD will probably be a good A-Rod, for once. Ernie Banks will bring dingers and good defense, at the cost of a .240 average. Alan Trammell is solid, if unspectacular.

- The AndROiD had some trouble last season. He didn’t hit as many dingers as you’d think. He didn’t get on base as much as you’d think. It was honestly just kind of a bad A-Rod season except he was exceptional on defense! Who knows, maybe this season he’ll hit much better! I put younger Ernie Banks over the Trammell but I wasn’t super confident about that. They’re all just good! I salute your shorts.

Left Field

1.) 1947 [28] Ted Williams <L> (SLU)
2.) 1961 [29] Mickey Mantle <S> (DEX)
3.) 1912 [24] Joe Jackson <L> (CMB)
4.) 1977 [24] Jim Rice <R> (INN)

- Ted Williams is

- GOD

- Sorry go on.

- I was gonna say pretty good, but I think your summary is better. Mickey Mantle should be in CF, but I guess he works okay in LF. Joe Jackson is a contact machine. Just make sure he’s not wearing his loafers. Jim Rice is lame as hell.

- MICKEY IS A GOD DAMNED LEGEND. HE IS GREAT FOR ME AND HIM DYING LAST SEASON BROKE MY HEART. THE LEGEND RETURNS THIS SEASON BABY. Joe Jackson is good also I guess. Jim Rice is lame as hell.

Center Field

1.) 1913 [26] Ty Cobb <L> (DEX)
2.) 1983 [24] Rickey Henderson <R> (CMB)
3.) 1965 [34] Willie Mays <R> (SLU)
4.) 1977 [25] Fred Lynn <L> (INN)

- The person who did the Norris Smythe preview says he rostered a 42 year old Rickey Henderson. What a gently caress.

- I agree that man is a gently caress. Ty Cobb is amazing, so I guess I can forgive cbx for putting Mantle in LF. I like Rickey Henderson better than older Willie Mays. I may even start Henderson above a Mays of similar age unless the stadium is designed to help RH power hitters. They just don’t do as well in the SL. Willie’s defense should probably be much better, but mogul is extremely poo poo when it comes to that aspect of the game. Fred Lynn was once a #1 overall dispersal draft pick. And it was probably the right choice. How times change.

- Ty Cobb easy #1 here. Crazy contact. He’s good. Willie should be better than Rickey but Willie is bugged and it STINKS!!! FIX WILLIE. Wait no, don’t do it until I get one traded back to me.

- He’s not bugged. Mogul just sucks.

- BUGGED!!!! Fred Lynn. Man. Just not at the same level. Some obstacles to overcome with this OF so far, DCB.

Right Field

1.) 1918 [23] Babe Ruth <L> (DEX)
2.) 1944 [23] Stan Musial <L> (SLU)
3.) 1902 [28] Honus Wagner <R> / 1983 [23] Robin Yount <R> (CMB)
4.) 1964 [29] Roberto Clemente <R> (INN)

- Hey! That’s MY Ruth!

- Babe Ruth Babe Ruth Babe Ruth Stan Musial Stan the Man Sultan of Swat. You get the picture. Would prefer to have Honus Wagner in the infield where his bat is much more valuable, but eh. Roberto Clemente is really an amazing player, but just not effective in the SL compared to the inner circle HOFers on this list.

- Roberto Clemente is actually an extremely cool player to have in the Super League, but he’s just not going to perform on the level of the others listed here. In conclusion, trade him to me.

- Stop asking for people to trade them your players, Matt. You sound like me when I ran a team.

- Listen after snagging a Hank Aaron for nothing I had to get the heat off of me somehow. I didn’t do any more moves the rest of the offseason! I’m going through some real emotions here!!! I NEED TO TRADE. I NEED EVERY COOL OF EVER!!!

Anyway, that’s the last of the categories here. LET’S EVALUATE THESE TEAMS.

INNSMOUTH LOOKERS

- I literally know jackshit about this team. Did they come from the Subpar League or the EC cup? Did they do well or just sneak by? Do they have cystic fibrosis? I don’t know.

- They won the Expansion Cup! That’s why they have the loving GRANDPA OF CTHULHU AT CATCHER! Anyway, despite having...that...I think that this team has some obstacles to climb. When you look at the infielders, you think “ok they can do OK”, but then you get to the outfield where they’re just...last in every category. Not to mention they have 2 SCARY rotations in this division they’re going against.

- Besides the lineup, their rotation just isn’t as good as the rest of the division either. However, it’s not to say they have a bad one. I just think the Nine’s and Burns’ rotations are extremely good. An EC team coming into the Super League...it’s hard to succeed. This team may surprise some people though.

CHARLES MONTGOMERY BURNS PRESENTS THE ZEPHYRS POWERED BY BRAIN & NERVE TONIC

- This team. Man this team. This is one good team. Almost took the division last season. They may not have as good a bench this time around, but I think they have a much better bullpen. They have a really good rotation, and some pretty good position players all around! They can absolutely take this division and it would not surprise me.

- Kensei...has a good Super League team? HulkaMatt might also win his division? What the hell happened since I went to Med School?

- YOU KNOW WHAT HAPPENED BECAUSE YOU RUN THE drat W’S!!!

- I “run” them as much as I check in every few days or when you bother me about it, yes.

- Grr!!! Anyway, really good team. Good job Kensei!

DETROIT WOLVERINES

- The Wolverines had it rough last season. I thought they could make a run for second, but it didn’t happen.

- Cbx deserves a break. Not saying he’ll get one, but he definitely deserves one. This team seems cursed as much as the Bombers at this point. Maybe even more so.

- I’d say more only because the Bombers are always in the playoffs.

- On paper, this team could win the division. Good or exciting players at all positions, a good rotation, and a solid bullpen. Not much more you could ask for.

SLAUGHTERHOUSE NINE

- Last season I doubted these guys. This season I won’t.

- Even when I was running the Kernels, I thought this team would compete with them. Their rotation was always top line, and their lineup was solid if not spectacular. Then they added Ted Williams and I started to worry a bit. It was only after the Kernels death that this team started to succeed like I thought it would. That was probably because the Kernels had a lifetime record of like 30-4 against the Nine lmao.

- You really should thank Balla!!! If he never had to do Med School, the Burnt Doritos would have won and you would have to face them.. FOREVER!!!!!!!!!

- This is 100% true.

- These loving current champs dude. I can’t even. loving BEET? WHY THE gently caress DOES -BEET- HAVE THOSE GOD drat TITLES?

- Personally, I blame David Robertson. We should never have trusted him over Pedro in the closer role, even if that seems insane.

- All I’m saying is, if Smasher put our team back in the tournament - we’d win easily.

- I agree 100%, Matt. At any rate, the Nine are a good team, and will probably make the playoffs in some fashion this season.

- Agreed.

FINAL THOUGHTS

- I still think the Nine are the cream of the crop of this division and are going to finish 1st by at least 6 games.

- I agree that the Nine are extremely freakin good. I however think they’re going to have a struggle for first against the Burnseses. It’s between those 2 teams! Kensei having a much better bullpen could be a real difference!

- Bullpens are bullshit. The Tornados and Kernels had poo poo for all bullpens. At any rate, I’m gonna fall back and not follow the grain, picking the team from Detroit to finish 2nd again. Cbx please do not disappoint me.

- I think they’re going to be third. Unfortunately for the Innsmouth Lookers...that means they’re 4th. I don’t think they have much of a shot to be honest. Straight out of the EC and just too many holes they need to fill. It’s gonna be tough to survive. Sorry DCB! :(

- That’s not a bad thing. They get 2 extra picks, and if they somehow survive they get 2 more! Plus, they have a created catcher. Can’t do much better than that, I would think! Like I said before, they might surprise some people

HULKAMATT PREDICTIONS

3.) Wolverines

Also since Plan Underwater Fenway didn't work I need to figure out a new stadium; I am half-tempted to just say "give me a carbon copy of Akibahara's stadium and we'll call it good" but I need to think on it a little more.

So I have no idea what happened to Clangbang, current leading theory is that he was eaten by a roving pair of massholes whilst trying to survive the wasteland that is Boston in January. Other theory is that he was quarantined due to his gingivitis. Anyways this is the roster him and I talked about so yeah

SLXXI Feast of Fired: A Preview of Hell

It's the most wonderful time of the year, when I preview some Sub-Par teams and imagine what idiotic storylines I'll have to compose for them and start weeping for hours at a time. A perfect counterpart to a holiday season spent alone with the cat, and the cat recently ran away from home. Stupid loving cat.

Please come back kitty. The house is so empty without you.

So, right. Previews. Last time I looked at Feast or Fired with any sort of care, the Generics vanquished the Dinos in the waning days of SL XVIII to secure a promotion to the SL while damning the veteran Florida Oranges to dispersal. Now in the bright dawn of a New Year, we see...the Dinos probably in a death struggle to secure promotion against another upstart team and/or damning a veteran team of too many championships to an ignominious end. Let us meet them in turn:

The Dinos! [hereafter "HID"] They've promoted and then died and then promoted and then died then survived then promoted then died, proving the futility of life and the need to fully embrace oblivion to escape Samsara and the cares of existence. One day, they will fall short in the Sub-Par and slip forever beneath the waves of this cold, grey sea of mediocrity. That day may be now, for even the most mediocre of teams cannot be ignored in the Sub-Par, and you do so at your own peril.

The Brooklyn Giants [hereafter "BRG"] are all-Rush mixtape's (ne CaptainYesterday) latest team, who has abandoned the greater Houston area to take up camp in Brooklyn and embrace the hipster that resides in us all. (There are programs for that, and with a success/death ratio of 3:2 you can't lose!) With a balanced mix of talent at the plate and a less than stellar collection of starting pitching, he hopes to capture the magic that was the Stoned Lightning and be cool in the Super League before everyone thought it was cool. Joke's on him, we're all nerds and we're not cool. Sucker!

What is Modern Love? [hereafter "MOD"] It is the loving tribute of our ombudsman to the legendary Jim Henson and his unlikely collaboration with the legendary David Bowie staring into your very soul. Featuring only players he could have reasonably seen play in person, it is an unlikely collection that, if nothing else, promises to turn the Super-League's bias against contemporary players on its head. That, or reaffirming the conventional wisdom that feeders of recent vintage is an elaborate paean to suicide drawn out over a very long 26 weeks of play. Either way, it will be fun to watch. Also, it'll be an excuse to integrate glam rock into the recaps.

The Nova Scotia Broomstackers [hereafter "NSB"] is the effort of new owner Orangeking, lured to the thread with promises of baseball and...things. As an avowed Mets fan, he of course took an 80s Mets feeder and instantly drew the attention of a dozen DEA agents looking for the next big cocaine bust. To counter this, he also took other teams to throw them off the scent and added some real talent too. I'm kind of not looking forward to explaining how this team will be fodder for the Gauntlet, because there's some real talent here and I always feel bad for new owners who are too often reduced to chum to whip the sharks into a frenzy of feeding and trading come Dispersal Draft XXI. Perhaps by stationing the team in Nova Scotia he hopes to find a place so depressing that all visitors will be mired in a fog of despair so thick they cannot help but lose games.

Finally, the Rockford Losers [hereafter "ROC"] are not accustomed to being losers. In a step unfathomable a few seasons ago, they've been demoted and are flirting with the final death that they evaded since being revived in the loophole of being holders of the Tag Team championships after being broken by the only team capable of defeating Humungus; the Macho Men. But as the angry, violent shade of that tyrant has learned, all the treasures of the temporal world avail you of nothing in death. As the successor in claim, TKBomber has quite the task in not dishonoring the victories, the glory, the unbridled violence of the Losers at the height of their powers. Perhaps the final act will be the brutal dismemberment of all his enemies in the division, but falling shor, taking as many teams with him as possible as he curses a ruthless world that suffers no weakness in its denizens.

Or as likely, he's going to destroy everyone and laugh from atop his throne built from the skulls of the other owners. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

To the rankings!

Catchers

1. Bill Dickey '32 / Bubbles Hargrave '23 (HID)
2. Joe Torre '65 / Bill Dickey '43 (ROC)
3. Mike Piazza '95 (MOD)
4. Carlton Fisk '77 (BRG)
5. Gary Carter '86 (NSB)

Controversial! Younger Dickey is better than Old Dickey, who gets significantly many more plate appearances than the small spoon of the first two platoons. Bubbles has a 5-tool name, and a 1 tool bat with a defense that rates average. Torre is nice but he won't show up enough to alter the trajectory of the Loser's overall offense. Piazza's bat has power while his defense features an amazing ability to point out that runners are stealing bases and make ineffectual noises in their general direction. This is considered kind of a terrible ability to have. Carlton Fisk is sort of the Super League baseline for a starter catcher. Gary Carter is disappointment made manifest, so as a Mets fan you should understand when he bats .220 and hits a whole 10 HRs over the entire season.

First Basemen

1. Mark Grace '95 / Mark McGwire '89 (MOD)
2. Babe Ruth '32 / Edgar Martinez '96 (HID)
3. Frank Thomas '93 (ROC)
4. Bill Terry '28 (BRG)
5. Keith Hernandez '86 (NSB)

This is a grab bag of dudes. I like the Grace/McGwire platoon because A: they're actual first basemen, and B: they're great ages. McGwire will draw walks and slam dingers. Grace will get some contact and get on base a bunch. Good enough! Babe Ruth not leading the pack? Yeah, because he's only a billion years old, and he's likely going to disappoint. Also, he's a right fielder. Ed Mart is a good hitter for a third baseman. As a first baseman his glove is wasted. Frank Thomas is a quiet presence that helps power the Loser's lineup but he loses the platoon advantage most of the time and it's been suppressing his upside in the league. Bill Terry is remembered (if at all) for his amazing batting average and his even more amazing business acumen. Sadly, the SL is a test of offensive production and he's comparatively punchless when facing the likes of Ruths and McGwire and Thomas. Now, if we wanted to compare year-to-year Buick sales, Bill Terry is your guy. But that's not the competition we're engaged in.

Keith Hernandez simply cannot compare with any of these luminaries and I've put him in his own paragraph to quarantine him.

Second Basemen

1. Rod Carew '73 / RIGGGGS Stephenson '32 (ROC)
2. Buddy Myer '35 (HID)
3. Rod Carew '70 (BRG)
4. Bill Madlock '83 (MOD)
5. Nap Lajoie '09 (NSB)

I dunno. The Losers platoon should be fine. Buddy Myer is pretty good for whatever reason, so he gets the nod over the young Carew, who has been far more volatile than his '73 counterpart. Bill Madlock spent 1500 innings at second, out of a career containing 14000 innings spent in the field the vast majority of which was spent at third, and he was not so good at either. His bat should play decently enough and taking a peek at the rotation I guess that he won't be particularly taxed. I don't like it! But we do terrible things in the name of our gimmick and so we're going to grumble about it and mumble about how the latest generation will be the downfall of civilization and should get off our beautifully manicured lawns. Nap Lajoie is old. When he's young, he's good. When he's old, he's kind of meh.

In no event are any of these guys going to be great defenders. Carew and Myer will be passable. For some this will be less important (see, Modern Love). For others this will be problematic, but an unknowable drag on their team's performance. It's impossible to say.

Third Basemen

1. Wade Boggs '92 (NSB)
2. Edgar Martinez '93 (MOD)
3. Mel Ott '28 (BRG)
4. Jim Thome '95 / Dick Allen '66 (HID)
5. Jim Thome '95 / Kevin Youkilis '07 (ROC)

:stonk: Look, I understand that third base is often a wasteland of poor choices. That doesn't mean you get to completely punt on it and stick whoever in there. Well first thing's first: Boggs is the best third baseman in the SL, and even if he's a little...advanced in years, he's so far ahead of his competition that there's no question here. Ed Mart is good and he's the right age for it. He might even be better than Boggs because when he gets in the mood he even hits dingers! Sometimes. Either way, good choice. Mel Ott! He's a child and he's not really a third baseman. But he's still Mel Ott. Hopefully he'll hit like he did in the EC and not be age bugged out. Mogul will think he's very raw (he's 19 for Old Pete's sake) and that will show in his batting AND his already shaky fielding at a spot he's not considered a natural fit.

So. We're doing the Jim Jam Third Base Experience™. I will need TKBomber and Forzelt to step forward and sign written waivers acknowledging that starting Thome at third has been known to cause indigestion and heartburn in their pitchers and so hold Sub-Par League® Inc, a Delaware corporation, harmless for any damages that may arise when, having bobbled the play for the fifteenth time that inning, the starting pitcher melts into a radioactive puddle of anger and ignites. Remember that you were warned as you try to hide from the posse formed of angry, torch-wielding pitchers out for your blood. Dick Allen has a history of sucking marginally less than the Greek God of Walks who has been cast out of Olympus since he doesn't take walks.

Shortstop

meh. Travis Jackson '28 (BRG)
bleh. Ozzie Smith '92 (NSB)
feh. Pop Lloyd '?? (ROC)
eeh. Cap't Jeets '03 (HID)
5. Barry Larkin '95 (MOD)

I don't know what to make of this crew. Pop Lloyd is a disappointment. Ozzie Smith is ancient, a fossil that I don't think Mogul will treat well. Travis Jackson is all glove and no bat. Jeets is all bat and no glove. Barry Larkin as modeled by Mogul has neither. There are no winners, only losers in this pile here. Take this ranking and my unending cynicism with a grain of salt. Maybe TKBomber can petition McFreeze to make Lloyd less terrible? If you're reading along, insert a few minutes of sighing with discontent, stirring a teacup listlessly to pad out the rest of this section.

Looking at this list makes me irritable.

Left Fielders
1. Barrold, the Lord Bonds of County Dinger '95 (MOD)
2. The Right Honourable Barrold Bonds, Member of Dinger Parliament and Dinger Counsellor '89 (ROC)
3. Ser Barrold, Knight Commander of the Order of the Dinger '87 (NSB)
4. Jesse Burkett '99 / Rickey Henderson '84 (HID)
5. Joe Kelley '01 (BRG)

Can you determine upon what base Barry Bonds' fame rests? I'll bet you'll never guess. Assuming the Duke of Dingers can stay healthy (subsidiary titles include Earl of Injuries, the Viscount of the Disabled List) these guys will all mash taters. Hit homers. Do Dingers. And draw walks. So yeah. They're good. Prime Barry is better than pre-superstar Barry is better than child Barry.

No offense to the rest of this list, but you're not really going to convince me that Burkett or Henderson, good, stout players who have some renown of a more local nature, can truly compare. They'll get on base and steal a bunch of bases so that's useful for lesser folks who know their place in the hierarchy of the natural order. Joe Kelley is a slap hitter who'll steals bases. That's not special if you're not building a team for that sort of strategy, and as far as I can tell the Giants aren't that sort of team. Oh well.

Center Fielders

1. Oscar Charleston '?? (ROC)
2. Willie Mays '61 (HID)
3. Willie Mays '56 (BRG)
4. Ken Griffey Jr '95 (MOD)
5. Ed Roush '19 (NSB)

Sit down, relax a bit. You might think I can dispose of this position quickly since there are duplicates, but I wish to regale you with a story about Oscar Charleston. You see, this Oscar Charleston is the best center fielder in the Super League. Not Tris Speaker. Not Ty Cobb. Certainly not the other two persons with whom he shares this list, with all due respect to the Say Hey Kid and the Kid, both of whom have careers that speak to a worthiness of enshrinement by any metric you choose.

Many seasons ago, the Losers came into being, the Earth shook and the sky filled with a blood red mist that foretold the coming devastation which would be wrought upon the league. At the forefront of this army, Lord Humungus's right hand man, rode Oscar Charleston. In fifteen seasons of dominance, until their recent fall, he was the team's MVP a whopping twelve times. An average season sees him with a WAR of 6.3, which on other, lesser teams might be the top three players combined. In 9200 plate appearances, he averages a 121 OPS+. He combines superb defense with a bat swing that sings.

He is peerless.

In short, do not disrespect Oscar Charleston. You will be ruined, and he will the instrument of that ruination, the cause of your lamentation. In light of that, I feel no pressing need to explain the rest of the rankings; it is the act of grading some ill-cut diamonds, chipped and clouded, while forced to include also the sun in your list. What stolen luster can compare with the source of all illumination?

So Oscar Charleston is pretty cool. The other guys are also cool, but not as cool. QED.

Right Fielders

1. Willie Keeler '01 (BRG)
2. Ichiro! '03 / Harry Heilmann '19 (HID)
3. Tony Gwynn '95 (MOD)
4. Lefty O'Doul '33 (ROC)
5. Ken Griffey Jr '92 (NSB)

This group is less than inspiring. Willie Keeler has consistent contact, if relying more on the speed of his feet than strength of arm to get past first base. Everyone needs an OBP lead-off guy I guess. Ichiro and Heilmann have been surprisingly productive, but if Ichiro draws the short straw because Mogul casts a baleful eye on the weird careers of NPB migrants, then bad things will happen. But the upside has historically been a decent platoon. Tony Gwynn is old but he's kind of like Mel Ott; a guy who had a long twilight of a career who had a slow fade. He has no power but in this group, it's not like he's got a ton of competition for that role any way. Lefty should be good, but he's too old and he's well past his peak and that's that. Note too that TKBomber suggests a platoon here but without putting his platoon partner in the majors roster that's less an order than an indication of preferences should the opportunity present itself. Not now though, no sir. Ken Griffey should be a towering giant of dingers and video game endorsements but Mogul is racist. If he does hit, he could rocket to the top of this list but when he's bad, ooof.

Bench

1. Riggs Stephenson/Ken Williams/Hack Wilson/Luke Appling/Platoon Partners (ROC)
2. Robinson Cano/Platoooooooooooooons! (HID)
3. Paul Molitor/Darrell Porter/Alan Trammell/Ken Oberkfell/Platoon Partners (MOD)
4. Todd Hundley/Jose Vizcaino/Bill Dahlen/Mike Schmidt/Phil Bradley (BRG)
5. Lenny Dykstra/Ivey Wingo/Wally Backman/Kevin Mitchell/Dasher Troy/Pat Duncan (NSB)

I'm going to kind of look at the minors too, since if a good judge of a bench is whether someone sitting there can take over if a starter is hurt, then you also have to reckon that the player's union has been thoroughly crushed and you can shift people to and from the minors with impunity, a restriction in life that we get to ignore. In that respect, the two long-established teams win hands down, of course. I like the collection of talent the Losers have, both on the bench and what they can dredge up from a nigh-infinite farm system. In theory the Dinos have a bench that is comprised of players that are being actively used; on the other hand I'm not convinced that the little spoons of their respective platoons are all that good. But at least its a vote of confidence.

Now, for the newcomers, depth is always going to be awkward. I like Modern Love's depth, and if some calamity were to befall the team they'd weather it well. They aren't gonna come off the bench and hit that clutch double, but you know, they can stand at their respective positions and hold a lead. Should you find that you need the services of Jose Vizcaino, you have failed at some point and your high school guidance counselor drinks himself daily to the brink of death over his inability to steer you right. Don't be that man! Do the right thing and make sure Vizcaino never sees the light of day.

The Broomstacker's bench is the nightmare that spawns in the deepest shadows of said guidance counselor's psyche after he has passed out from his nightly drinking binge. If your old Nap Lajoie dies and Wally Backman has to take the field...I won't know what to do. I cannot countenance it. Madness is the Innsmouth Lookers' thing, and they're not in the Sub-Par. Yet.

Starting Pitching

First!

1. Satchel Paige '?? (ROC)
2. Greg Maddux '95 (MOD)
3. Don Drysdale '63 (HID)
4. Nap Rucker '12 (BRG)
5. Hod Eller '19 (NSB)

Ho boy. It feels like many of you don't quite understand the concept of "staff ace" and have thrown your pitchers in random orders because there's great, good, and then random. Satchel Paige at the peak of his career was unstoppable. And he has proven as such in the SL so there is no dispute of his supremacy here particularly given the competition. Maddux is fine, and unlike the ill-fated Coldplayers experiment he's backed by a reasonable defense. Don Drysdale has no business being an ace, but it works in the Sub-Par so here we are. Nap Rucker and Hod Eller are generic deadballers, but Rucker has a track record while Hod Eller practically has nothing either in life or the Super-League. The slenderest of reeds to hang your pitching hopes upon.

Second!

1. Don Drysdale '68 (HID)
2. Silver King '90 (NSB)
3. Nolan Ryan '78 (ROC)
4. Randy Johnson '93 (MOD)
5. Bill Donovan '01 (BRG)

Your rotations are kind of scaring me. The solidity of Drysdale mystifies me, but it's impossible to dispute that he's effective. Silver King is a generic deadballer with a non-generic name and sometimes he actually justifies it. He does it more often than not, so I have to cede the ranking to him. Nolan Ryan once was the terror of the Super-League, part of the utter dominance that was the Skyhawks. That, coincidentally, was TKBomber's team. But those days are long gone, half-remembered stories spoken of as legends with more fiction than fact, told by men who cling to the past to avoid an unpleasant present. Which, uh, looking at the Losers' current predictament...yeah. Anyway, Ryan isn't anything special any more. Conversely, Randy Johnson was never anything special and only in recent times has his stock gone up. Since my projections are based on data gleamed from the past, it's possible that I have underestimated him. It's as likely though that I am estimating him just as he deserves and the ranking is fair and correct. I feel the weight of the evidence is right. It's still better than Bill Donovan who kills teams and has no upside. He exists to prevent the pitching coach from pushing out the Pitchomatic to the mound, though you might decide to take your chances with that instead.

Third!

1. Carl Hubbell '28 (BRG)
2. Tim Keefe '84 (NSB)
3. Don Drysdale '61 (ROC)
4. Nolan Ryan '82 (MOD)
5. Don Sutton '76 (HID)

Oh, I see, the third hole is now where we stash aces. Gotcha. Hubbell is a bona fide ace, a pitcher who gets under played in the Super League because of a lack of '30s Giants teams in the feeders, which also explains the relative scarcity of prime Mel Otts in the Super League. I want to see a screwball in action, though the Dragons could never make their Hubbell perform to spec, I'm hoping to see it work out for these guys. The one problem is that this is the rookie edition, so there's probably going to be some control issues. Tim Keefe is a cool guy who won games by being more clever than the hitters, though he gave much credit to Buck Ewing who helped him pinpoint the weaknesses of the batters he faced. Before the rules changed, he would sometimes deliver his pitches with a literal hop, skip and jump off the mound, which as one might understand, is ridiculous to bat against. He won't be that good but he'll be fine. Drysdale is good in the League, and I suspect it's his moderate groundball rate, modest BB/9, relatively low HR rate, and good SO/9 that explains it. Basically, when he's good, he's like a deadball pitcher that also strikes out batters at a rate comparable to modern pitchers. It does mean he ends up surrendering a lot of hits, which is problematic to say the least. When he's good, he's indomitable in a way that ranks with the best. When he's bad, though...it's best for the Dinos to not contemplate that given their reliance him. Or the Losers, in this instance. Nolan Ryan, I've said my bit. This one is older and even less likely to dominate, but perhaps Fairgame has devised a solution that will aid him. This vintage Don Sutton, unlike the other Dons, has not had the sort of success they've enjoyed and can safely be relegated to last among his peers. Very dead last.

Fourth!

1. Roger Clemens '86 (MOD)
2. Roger Clemens '92 (NSB)
3. Don Sutton '82 (ROC)
4. Jim Bunning '66 (HID)
5. Freddie Fitzsimmons '28 (BRG)

Well. Roger Clemens has traditionally been disappointing, but the younger versions show a tiny promise of the 'roidal dominance that encompasses his real life career. This was when he didn't even need it! Maybe it'll pan out, because if it does, wowwie. If it doesn't, I don't think it's any worse than this bunch. Don Sutton at this age has a long history of doing well, but also a lot of time spent not doing well, including the time I used him on my team many moons ago. When he works, he really really works, but when he crashes it's devastating. Who knows who will show up. Jim Bunning (R-KY) was a complete bust in the US Senate and is sort of a guy you stick in the back end of your rotation to eat innings for want of a better choice. You're biding time until you come across an upgrade, much like if you're a libertarian and are awaiting your Paul Rand to show up in the primary. Or something. Freddie Fitzsimmons! I used this guy on my very first team and he did well. This was also literally years ago and so many SL seasons in the past that he's got no worthwhile history to lean upon, and I have no faith that such performance will be replicated in this day and age. Still! There's the faint glimmer that he'll do okay. Better than a completely hopeless existence, I mean, just ask CraigK.

Fifth!

1. Carl Mays '21 (ROC)
2. Luis Tiant '70 (BRG)
3. Slim Sallee '19 (NSB)
4. Mike Mussina '03 (HID)
5. Sid Fernandez '91 (MOD)

I don't hate this group. It doesn't fill me with unimaginable angst and dread, unlike some of the other positions I've ranked before, which is often the case with the #5s in prior previews. Carl Mays, Ray Chapman, etc., you've heard this story. Still, he's an above average pitcher at a prime age who should be more than enough to handle this group. This is MY Luis Tiant, and he's honestly pretty good. He was a mismatch for my team but he's had some good seasons even with the Generics pitching in a place where he'll give up a trillion dingers. He'll be fine. Slim Sallee is older than the ones we've seen in the SL before and we've yet to see whether he'll perform to his near decade younger clones. The ceiling to his performance is high, but his floor could be much lower as well. Mike Mussina's celing seems to be league average, and his floor is a sub-basement below the ground. That's not the best risk to take. Sid Fernandez is a cipher. Misused as a reliever, his only complete season as a starter saw a mediocre ERA, decent K/BBs, and a veritable congo line of batters circling the bases on dingers allowed. Um. Welp.

Maybe Fairgame will have solved the mystery of modern pitching? One can only hope for his own sake.

Bullpens

1. Wagner/Sutter/Melancon/Orosco/Smoltz/Hamels (MOD)
2. Hoffman/Holland/Fingers/Fingers/Nen/Drysdale (HID)
3. Papelbon/McDowell/Orosco/Luque/Lynch (NSB)
4. Smoltz/Dibble/Bedrosian/Gossage/Myers/Tiant (ROC)
5. Franco/Bedrosian/Oh/Gomez/Messersmith/Langston (BRG)

Hey, they're all actual relievers! Two established teams who have had time to build their bullpens and three newcomers who've taken modern feeders means we don't see the abominations that used to grace the EC. The first three of this list are good, but I'm especially in love with Modern Love's pen. The Dinos should only lose close games when Fingers Disease, a chronic wasting of saves afflicting Rollie Fingers, demands it. Papelbon was going to be my pick until OrangeKing stole him from me :argh: The Losers have an acceptable bullpen accreted over geological ages. Solid enough. The Giants are relying on Bedrosian and Franco, which would be concerning, but considering that I ran some rear end in a top hat named Ron Perronski as a closer (who?) this is miles away from the "baseline" of the Super-League, i.e., hot garbage.

Conclusion!

I've wasted nearly five thousand words and a half-hour of your time and you're still here? Fie upon you and your house. Here's how I see it: everyone will peg the Losers to win the division, and they will likely be vindicated. The Dinos will make an upstart run at the end of the season and fall short. Modern Love will quietly accumulate a winning record, then cruise to either a high Gauntlet run they'll win easily or an outright bye. If neither the Dinos nor Modern Love win the division, they'll have further chances to do so.

The Broomstackers and the Giants are fodder for Dispersal Draft XXI. Sorry.

With a new year, comes a new season. Hello and welcome to the Monster's Ball division preview for Sub-Par League IX, starring a young thief named Spriggles on a quest to defeat the evil Kuja. Last season, TheFlyingLlama threw his values and love for the dinger to the curb and the high contact, groundballer Nega-Llamas won the division. This division has two returning teams from Sub-Par League VIII, an impressive feat considering how strong the DH league normally is. Interestingly enough, this division also has 3 new teams in it, so let's get on with the introductions, accompanied with songs by Canadian artists, of course.

BONUS WAGNER
This team probably should have won the division last season if not for a terrible run of injuries costing them. Wagner's pitching was spectacular last season, with a team WHIP of 1.278, a number beaten only by the Keys, RCMP, and Panderers. If Clangbang's pitching can come even close to what it did last season and his hitters stay healthy, this time is a major threat. As an aside, with all due respect to the DC Cabal, Bonus Wagner and W.E.B. Dat Bois are probably the two lamest team names in the league, and this comes from a guy who named his team after Street Fighter 2.

GLASTONBURY KNIGHTS
This team probably should have won the division last season if not for Revenant Threshold being banished to the nega-dimension by TheFlyingLlama for several months, preventing them from putting Smokey Joe Wood back in at the SP1 slot post-recovery from injury. By merit of being around since SL13, they sport the deepest roster in the division and go into this season as the favourites. Providing Revenant Threshold is there to manage his team for the majority of the season.

PLIMOTH PREMODERNISTS
Hey, it's a Marauder team! To put it bluntly, the Premodernists are a gimmick team. This team exists because Marauder put them together as a fun filler team in the EC, but is bad at communication so everybody assumed it wasn't a filler team. After some discussion, people decided the gimmick was silly and harmless enough to justify a spot in the Sub-Par League. However, the existence of the Premodernists might have already killed the Genoa Janus. That doesn't seem harmless to me!
Sporting a roster comprised almost entirely of 19th century/early 1900s players, the Premodernists promise to hit a lot of balls and field absolutely none. Will the Premods be able to win off firepower alone?

ORIGAMI TSUNAMIS
Poor Pungry. One of the Super-League owners who's struggled to find a lot of success finally gets a first overall pick and there isn't even a Ruth to show for it. That being said, his latest team, the Tsunamis, come equipped with some modern bats and Stan Musial is not to be slept on. Pungry's surprised people in the past and won the division with a sleeper team, can history repeat itself?

OMAHA FORGETTABLES
This team is being introduced last because I was gonna do some great, "And that's all the teams!" bit after the first 4 but I couldn't think of a way to do it that didn't sound extremely forced and terrible. The Forgettables come with a solid infield and a starting rotation so good I had to double check to make sure it was an EC team. Starting pitching has stolen divisions before, and the Forgettables rotation is certainly good enough to do it.

C:
1. 1935 Mickey Cochrane [32] (BON)
2. 1970 Joe Torre [29]/ 1974 Johnny Bench [26] (GLA)
3. 1998 Mike Piazza [29] (ORI)
4. 1977 Brian Downing [26] (OMA)
5. 1992 Ivan Rodriguez [20] (PLI)

Mickey Cochrane and Bill Dickey are awfully similar. Lefty, great contact hitters, rarely ever strike out, good arm for throwing out runners. He'll be great. Joe Torre is known for being a manager but was a heck of a baseball player in his own right. Johnny Bench is arguably the greatest catcher to ever live, but given a rough reputation by Mogul. He's also questionably used in a platoon instead of as a personal catcher, for a reason we'll get into later. Mike Piazza will hit around 20 dingers, which will be a great boost for the Tsunamis offense. With respect to Brian Downing, he's an average catcher who doesn't match up to the names above him on this list. Coming in last is Pudge. Pudge is probably the best defensive catcher of all time, but at age 20 he won't be able to hit that well and I'm not 100% confident in his defensive stats being up there either.

1B:
1. 1998 John Olerud [29]/2000 Frank Thomas [32] (GLA)
2. 1935 Goose Goslin [34]/1935 Hank Greenberg [24] (BON)
3. 1881 Dan Brouthers [23] (PLI)
4. 2004 Frank Thomas [36] (ORI)
5. 1983 Eddie Murray [27] (OMA)

I like this group. Mentholmoose's best friend and Frank Thomas is a great platoon and both should excel. Bonus Wagner's platoon loses points on account of Goose Goslin not being a 1B. The Premods have the youngest Dan Brouthers in SL history by 9 years and he would have been in the #2 spot if not for the fact that despite Goose Goslin not being a 1B, he is still going to be capable of fielding at 1B better than Dan Brouthers. Frank Thomas returns again, older and without the benefit of a platoon partner to cover his weaknesses. Taking up the rear is Eddie Murray, who is fresh off a solid season for the B-Zephyrs, but his numbers aren't quite as good as Thomas'. He'll do fine, though.

2B:
1935 Charlie Gehringer [32]/1992 Ryne Sandberg [32] (BON)
1983 Lou Whitaker [26] (OMA)
1984 Ryne Sandberg [24] (GLA)
1892 Ed Delahanty [24] (PLI)
1938 Buddy Myer [34] (ORI)

Bonus Wagner take the #1 spot with another platoon I'm a big fan of. Gehringer and Sandberg compliment eachother really well. Good work! Lou Whitaker should be in the Hall of Fame, and his stock in the Super-League has never been higher ever since people became obsessed with defense. A younger Ryne Sandberg returns to take the number 3 spot. He's solid on his own, but as previously mentioned, platooning makes him better. Ed Delahanty was technically a second baseman, but was really more well known for playing the outfield. Also drowning. I don't really have anything against Buddy Myer, but he won't hit as well as Delahanty will and somebody has to be last on this list.

3B:
1. 1984 Wade Boggs [26]/1970 Joe Torre [29] (GLA)
2. 1994 Wade Boggs [36](ORI)
3. 1901 John McGraw [28] (PLI)
4. 1949 Jackie Robinson [30] (BON)
5. 2013 David Wright [30] (OMA)

Okay. Revenant Threshold. I wanna have a talk with you. Joe Torre is really good, I get that. Wade Boggs is better. Wade Boggs is far and away the best 3B you're going to get in this league and he's been getting traded for insane amounts. You do not need to platoon Wade Boggs. Make Bench a personal catcher for somebody so Torre gets every 5th day off or whatever, because Wade Boggs should be playing every game. Pungry has the right idea, and takes the #2 spot with an older version. John McGraw is a great hitter and will not field anything, which is the Premods way of life if you haven't figured it out by now. Jackie Robinson is unpredictable and can sometimes hit .300 and sometimes not hit at all. What is for certain is he'll have a good glove. David Wright is a pretty good player cursed by a back injury, and unfortunately he is outclassed here.

SS:
1. 1902 Honus Wagner [28] (GLA)
2. 1904 Honus Wagner [30] (PLI)
3. 1960 Ernie Banks [29] (OMA)
4. 1910 Honus Wagner [36]/1941 Luke Appling [34] (BON)
5. 1980 Robin Yount [24] (ORI)

The battle between two mentalities: Defense and Honus Wagner. The two better aged ones take 1 and 2, respectively. Ernie Banks is going to hit .240 but get a lot of value out of that .240, and his glove will come in handy with the Forgettables groundball heavy rotation. Old Honus platooned with old Appling come in 4th. Both will hit well and play sub-par defense, but that's a lot of players in this division. Yount comes in last solely because his bat has a tendency to disappear, but he's a fine option at SS and will field well.

LF:
1. 1994 Barry Bonds [29] (BON)
2. 1995 Gary Sheffield [26] (OMA)
3. 1913 Zack Wheat [25]/1922 Riggs Stephenson [24] (GLA)
4. 1938 Al Simmons [36] (ORI)
5. 1904 Fred Clarke [31]/1881 Jim O'Rourke [30] (PLI)

WHAT'S UP YA FUCKIN LOSERS IT'S BARRY BONDS TIME. Barry Bonds is the greatest hitter any of us will ever see in our lifetimes, with or without steroids. He's a clearcut #1. Gary Sheffield is an awful, terrible, no good defender with a pretty good bat, but unlike every other time I've said that this preview, he's actually capable of hitting dingers! Riggs is the quintessential "I only know this person exists because of the Super-League" player and I could do without seeing Zack Wheat in this platoon, honestly. I'm not sold on old Al Simmons, but he gets the nod over the relatively unproven Clarke and O'Rourke.

CF:
1. 1922 Tris Speaker [34] (GLA)
2. 1965 Mickey Mantle [33] (BON)
3. 1960 Richie Ashburn [33]/1977 Chet Lemon [22] (OMA)
4. 1904 Ginger Beaumont [27]/1899 Jake Stenzel [32] (PLI)
5. 1994 Bernie Williams [25] (ORI)

Oh hell yes, it's Tris Speaker. I didn't want to bring up my own team in this preview but Tris Speaker put up a WAR of above 4 for me despite only being there for 99 games. He's spectacular, he ages well, and he's probably the best player on the Knights. Mickey Mantle should probably be better than he is in the Super-League, but he's still pretty good. Ashburn/Lemon is a super interesting platoon that I want to see the results for. Ginger Beaumont is somebody Marauder made up. I've been looking at nothing but deadballers from him for a while now and this one he made up to try and see if he could slip one past me. I'm onto you, Marauder. Stenzel and him get the nod over Williams mainly because Williams has had a ton of struggles in the Super-League in recent times.

RF:
1. 1953 Stan Musial [32] (ORI)
2. 1989 Tony Gwynn [29] (BON)
3. 1934 Mel Ott [25]/1961 Roberto Clemente [25] (GLA)
4. 1901 Mike Donlin [23] (PLI)
5. 1916 Sam Rice [26]/1988 Ivan Calderon [26] (OMA)

Stan the Man takes the #1 spot. While his floor is a lot lower than the likes of a Babe Ruth, he's still certainly capable of an 150 OPS+ season. Tony Gwynn frickin' rules and I'm glad there are more versions of him in the league now. He's not a typical OF, leaning more towards doubles and stolen bases than dingers, but he won't strike out and should be a trusted bat in the lineup. Mel Ott is another great player I'm not sure needs to be platooned with Clemente. You may be noticing a theme with the Knights. Clemente is a fine player in his own right, and shouldn't hold the team down too much, but Mel Ott is pretty gosh darned good. Mike Donlin is a deadballer, doesn't hit for power, won't strike out. It's really hard to talk about the Premods because I don't know who a lot of these people are. Sam Rice is kinda below average in the Super-League, and is platooned with Ivan Calderon, who I am not confident in the slightest.

BENCH:
1. 1B Platoon/2B Platoon/SS Platoon/1967 Hank Aaron/1943 Ernie Lombardi (BON)
2. Platoons, my god, platoons ( + 2003 Ken Griffey & 1970 Pete Rose) (GLA)
3, CF Platoon/RF Platoon/1909 Nap Lajoie/1985 Tony Pena/1985 Johnny Ray/1988 Harold Baines (OMA)
4. CF Platoon/LF Platoon/1904 Claude Ritchey/1901 Bill Keister/1881 Jack Rowe/1881 Hardy Richardson (PLI)
5. 2004 Paul Konerko/2004 Carlos Lee/1994 Mike Stanley/2004 Magglio Ordonez/1994 Don Mattingly (ORI) [note: Pungry didn't list a bench in their post so I might have missed a player]

I like the Wagner Bench. Platoons are cool, they have a solid backup C, and Hank Aaron is a good pinch hitter to have. Forget what I said about platoons being cool, the Knights have way too god damned many of them. Their bench is very deep though which should help them in long games. I really don't have strong feelings on the last 3 benches, but Pungry's bench being very 1B heavy is cause for concern.

SP1:
1895 Cy Young [28] (PLI)
1909 Addie Joss [29] (OMA)
1922 Smoky Joe Wood [32] (GLA)
1885 Old Hoss Radbourn [30] (ORI)
1910 Deacon Phillippe [38] (BON)

I agonized over who to give the number one spot to for 15 minutes. I decided on Joss, did my rankings, went to bed, went through the entire next day and now that I've opened the Word document again to do the writeup all I can think is, "But Prime Cy Young, though." A Prime Cy sighting in the Super-League is the equivalent of finding a gosh darned unicorn in the wild. He can dominate at age 40+, and is certainly even more capable of doing so at age 28. Addie Joss is fantastic, and as I've said, would be number one on this list if I wasn't enamored with the idea of Prime Cy Young. Joss is near the end of his career and life in 1909 but will be lights-out.
Smoky Joe Wood hadn't pitched in two years in 1922, and wasn't a regular fulltime pitcher for even longer. Does Mogul care? No! Of course not. He was injured last season for the Knights and by the time he was healed, RT was already banished into the Nega-Dimension by Llama's evil magicks. Like Cy Young and Joss before him, he's a bonafied ace. Old Hoss is another deadballer and is a good age, but I don't think he's on the level as the three players listed before him. Deacon Phillippe in 1910 is a little too old for my tastes to put him in the SP1 slot.

SP2:
1. 1965 Juan Marichal [27] (OMA)
2. 1904 Deacon Phillippe [32] (PLI)
3. 1910 Babe Adams [28] (BON)
4. 1918 Dutch Leonard [26] (GLA)
5. 1885 Jim McCormick [28] (ORI)

Oh thank god its not a deadballer. Part of what makes Marichal as good as he is and seperates him from many other groundballers is that he's capable of getting strikeouts. With as many contact hitters as there are in this division, keeping the ball out of play as much as possible is important. 32 is an age where Deacon Phillippe can really shine, and you can make a fair arguement for him at the #1 spot. Babe Adams was a deadballer. It's really hard for me to find the words to type about deadballers who weren't even Hall of Famers but Babe Adams apparently has a song written about him. It's not good.
Dutch Leonard was a pretty good pitcher and has being a left-handed deadballer working for him. I don't think he's SP2 material, though. To clarify, this is Deadball Dutch, not Knuckle Dutch Leonard. That was a different player. This Dutch Leonard had a passionate hatred for Ty Cobb and during Cobb's time as manager for the Tigers, Ty blatantly treated him terribly and ruined his career. Considering Ty Cobb was a massive piece of poo poo, I'm going to guess Dutch was an alright person. Jim McCormick is a deadballer who's success in the Super-League has been with the Masked Shortstop playing behind him. He could be great, but I don't trust him without the greatest defender in SL history.

SP3:
1916 Walter Johnson [28] (OMA)
1906 Babe Adams [24] (BON)
1956 Sandy Koufax [20] (GLA)
1994 Jimmy Key [33] (ORI)
1881 Pud Galvin [24] (PLI)

Walter Johnson might be the best pitcher of all time and is in his prime in 1916. He's the SP3 for the Forgettables because why not. "Oh You Babe" by Swamp Chicken is the name of the Babe Adams song and it sounds exactly like what you would think a song by a band named Swamp Chicken would sound like. Koufax is waaaay too young at age 20 and shouldn't be in the SP3 slot, in my opinion. I want to believe in Jimmy Key. He was a great pitcher and I think he's gotten unlucky in the Super-League. Left-hander with a solid groundball rate and can get strikeouts. Giving up dingers could be a concern but with an entire team comprised entirely of players who can't hit homeruns as a division rival, Jimmy Key could do some work this season. Pud Galvin is a deadballer who's success in the Super-League has been with the Masked Shortstop playing behind him. This is a recording. They say the managers would let him pitch complete games every time because it's not acceptable to pull your Pud in public.

SP4:
1. 1909 Cy Young [42] (OMA)
2. 1901 Joe McGinnity [30] (PLI)
3. 1950 Robin Roberts [23] (GLA)
4. 1910 Howie Camnitz [28] (BON)
5. 1911 Jack Coombs [28] (ORI)

Cy Young returns, now at an age the Super-League is accustomed to seeing him at. By August he'll have fallen apart but in the meantime he'll be great. Joe McGinnity is a solid pitcher who usually comes as a bonus to picking up a turn of the century New York Giants feeder with Christy Mathewson. There's no Mathewson to be seen on the Premods, but McGinnity will hold the SP4 spot well. Robin Roberts is the master of the "throw the ball directly down the middle" pitch. As such, he was the record holder for HR allowed for a long time. The good news is he'll very rarely walk anybody. I spent 10 minutes trying to think of something interesting to say for Howie Camnitz and Jack Coombs. I can't do it. Camnitz gets the nod over Coombs by merit of Camnitz having a career ERA+ over 100, unlike Coombs.

SP5:
1. 1902 Deacon Phillippe [30] (GLA)
2. 1985 Rick Reuschel [36] (OMA)
3. 1906 Jack Taylor [32] (BON)
4. 2004 Mark Buehrle [25] (ORI)
5. 1904 Sam Leever [32] (PLI)

Revenant Threshold, why is a good aged Deacon Phillippe your SP5? See how well I ranked the Premods Deacon at SP2? Yours is a better age than that one. Ravishing RIck Reuschel takes the #2 spot. He's up in years and pounds in 1985, but there's no denying he's a great Super-League pitcher. I know absolutely nothing about Jack Taylor except that he was good for both Bonus Wagner and the Nega-Llamas last season, leading me to believe it wasn't a fluke. Mark Buehrle is an unproven player in the Super-League, but I'll take him over Sam Leever, a deadballer who hasn't had long-term success since the long gone days of deadballer dominance and the Cleveland Unicorns.

BULLPEN:
1. 1995 Robb Nen/2015 Tony Watson/1977 Clay Carroll/1995 Bryan Harvey/1985 John Candelaria/1985 Rick Rhoden (OMA)
2. 2009 Luke Gregerson/2009 Mike Adams/2015 Wade Davis/2009 Heath Bell/1965 Al Downing/1965 Whitey Ford (BON)
3. 1984 Dennis Eckersley/1994 John Wetteland/1994 Michael Jackson/2007 Hong-Chih Kuo/1922 George Uhle/1962 Gaylord Perry (GLA)
4. 2002 Trevor Hoffman/2004 Damaso Marte/2004 Shingo Takatsu/2002 Steve Reed/2002 Alan Embree (ORI)
5. 2014 Ken Giles/1883 Guy Hecker/1901 Harry Howell/1901 Jerry Nops/1881 Jack Lynch/1924 Stan Coveleski (PLI)

I hate talking about bullpens. I can't even build a good one myself. I'm a big fan of the one-two punch the Forgettables and Bonus Wagner have at Setup and Closer. Eckersley alternates between fantastic and terrible, and Gaylord Perry should probably be in the rotation in place of Robin Roberts or baby Koufax. The Tsunamis have Trevor Hoffman, and players that might be too old like Steve Reed. Shingo Takatsu was good in his time in the majors, but was only around for two seasons, I'm not confident in him. Ken Giles is going to strike a ton of people out for the Premods, which is important considering their defense. The rest of the Premods bullpen are generic deadballers who will not be so lucky.

FINAL PREDICTIONS:
The Knights will return to the Super-League in SL XXII. They have the deepest roster in the league and provided RT can stay for the length of the season to manage it, will persevere down the stretch. I think the Forgettables and Bonus Wagner will be fighting for a Gauntlet bye spot. The Forgettables rotation could easily steal this division, but I think their bats will lose out to that of Bonus Wagner. The Premodernists have a fun gimmick, but you can only get so far with so little defense. I have faith that Pungry will build a contender one day, but the Tsunamis aren't it.

Career actual MLB splits;
Ott; .309/.422/544 vs RHP, .287/.367/.519 vs LHP
Clemente; .308/.347/.455 vs RHP, .340/.390/.524 vs LHP

Clemente against lefties is just a better hitter, historically, at least. Point very much taken on Torre at third, though.
