protestants immigrants to america were straight up hosed in the head literally nothing was fun. nothing could be fun. fun was unproductive, and if you weren't working toward a larger harvest and a shinier belt on your stupid hat then it was time given to the devil rather than letting your hands be tools of the lord even their poetry was hosed. it had to be paeans to the beauty of work and labor and some weird MBA douchebag's idea of how to maximize your time one of my favorite books that i read was by Increase Matter, and his name sounds like a really dorky porno name for a guy with a big dick, despite the fact that he wore a powdered wig and a buckle hate. he was the legal genius who spared a lot of lives in the Slayem Witch Trials by having the sense to say, "So, if you were under the influence of the devil, is it fair to say that your testimony is as accurate as if you were witnessing the events drunk off your rear end on cider?" which seems fairly obvious in retrospect, but it was a different time and you needed someone in the fanciest wig money could buy from the Big City of 30,000 people to say it before it mattered legal genius he was, he wrote an entire book of anecdotes on the devil killing people and driving them to suicide. these were a people who believed that the devil was weak, but he was everywhere and he was always gunning for you. in their cosmic worldview, the devil literally couldnt touch you unless the lord gave satan the OK so just imagine that. satan was everywhere, he was always after you, and whenever he attacked you it was because the lord said it was cool. why even draw a distinction between god and the devil at that point? just accept your borderline personality god into your life and enjoy the ride.
