Indolent Bastard posted:The what? Industry jargon for a copy of the shots that have text over them, only without the text and other burn-ins, specifically for international distributors to slap on said text in their own language or whatever. It's usually dropped onto the end of a tape or file before delivering the show or trailer to the distributor and never meant to be seen by the general public.

There should be at least a minute of black between the trailer and textless, and there really should be a textless slate to get the timing right on the first clip. If I was QC'ing this someone would've definitely got chewed out.

To be safe you better go through it for flash frames and audio drops and then alert Belgium. I recently had an editor that was sending their textless passes to me that were missing shots after the black out (no beds) for the text. Of course I missed it because it was just blackness for a little bit longer. I'd have to either watch them simultaneously (which I now have to do) or be freakin Rain Man to remember what shots in an entire trailer should all be there. They also routinely forget to unmute all their audio tracks so I have potential Mummy trailers happening all the time. drat sloppy!

I remember somebody saying "holy poo poo!" in the theater after that Cliffhanger trailer. There wasn't a lot of Internet in '93 so you would get peoples' honest reactions.

I haven't watched Cliffhanger since '93 in the theater and now you guys are scaring me. It, and Total Recall 1990, remain my two favorite theater-going experiences. I know I've told this story before but Total Recall 1990 was after Arnie had done Twins and Kindergarten Cop so he was on a bit of a slump and his serious fans were a bit deflated. The advertising for Total Recall was interesting but also kind of ambiguous (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rJjp1RnBZrM) so people didn't know quite what to expect. And there's a little mind-fuckery at the beginning but Arnie mostly plays this regular (hugely buff) guy and the audience remained kinda confused. But then goes to Rekall and then gets yanked off the street by thugs and bellows "What da hell did I doo wrong?" before tapping into his inner action hero and murdered his attempted kidnappers in the bloodiest and most brutal way possible. As he stood over their corpses it collectively dawned on the theater that this was gonna be some Serious Arnie Action and the whole theater wilded out in the craziest way possible. It erupted.

I loving loved Cliffhanger the first time I saw it. I made the mistake of taking a friend who is really into rock climbing to see it a second time. Big mistake. Now all I remember about that movie is the constant barrage of "That Would Never Happen"s.

In Cliff Hanger Stallone kills one of the bad guys by lifting him up and impaling him on a hanging stalactite. It's one of the most badass bud guy dispatches in cinema history. Can you imagine the strength that would take?

Valley Uprising has the "true" version of this story as related by the climbers who lived there in the 70s. Needless to say, it's pretty different from Cliffhanger. It's a really good documentary about rock climbing actually. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hQXWnoipdFE

Sly is lucky that grabbing dude by the balls is enough to stop him from stabbing him in the throat when he lifts him though. Also he's definitely enjoying the bloodrain at the end there.

Cliffhanger was a fun watch in the theatres for me, but mostly because there was a middle aged Chinese lady sitting a few rows behind us freaking out at all the action scenes screaming "Ai ya! No! Don't do dat! Ai ya!" and the whole theatre was loving howling with laughter every time she opened her mouth. My guilty pleasure climbing movie is Vertical Limit. It's firmly in the "so stupid it's great" category, with stellar performances by a supporting cast that includes Ben Mendelsohn, Scott Glenn, Bill Paxton and Siddig El Tahir El Fadil El Siddig Abderrahman Mohammed Ahmed Abdel Karim El Mahdi.
