Why not just turn the CIA loose and have them bribe all the Eastern European drug lords into flooding Russia with cheap, pure Afghan heroin?

Trading an entire generation of their youth and collapsing what's left of their public health infrastructure for loving around and giving us President Donald loving Trump seems like something approaching fair.

I'm friends with a faculty member at Yale Medical School who does AIDS research and heroin/IV drug use is already tearing a swath through Russia and HIV along with it, and the government is in total denial about it because HIV is seen as a sign of morally decadent West but Soviet stronk like Kamchatka bear! They've tried to censor his research in St. Petersburg on multiple occasions.

Apparently the ruble crashing has caused heroin to double in price over there and they can't turn to Krokodil because the Russian government made the Codeine precursors really difficult to get ahold of nowadays. The spike in heroin price is unlikely to cause a drop in usage though.

I've been reading some interesting and increasingly doomy things about Russia's demographics. Not only HIV and drug/alcohol abuse killing the male population (in particular) but very, very high rates of abortion and emigration.

The other problem is that the Russian mortality rate increased and the birth rate plunged in the 1990s, almost as bad as the population hit Russia took because of World War II. To be sure, it started recovering under Putin (although not to replenishment levels). But the problem that Russia is starting to face right about ... now ... is that the generation born in the 1990s is reaching the age when they start having babies of their own. But because the birth rate was so low then, the population is going to take another plunge since it's a shrunken generation.

The only demographic that's not in decline is the Muslim one, which could be between 16-20 percent of the country, because they have big families and don't drink (as much). Now factor in the racism in Russian society and the real and actual Islamic insurgency that is both (a) not allowed to be reported on (b) temporarily put on hold because the Russians made it easy for Islamist fighters to travel to Syria.

Putin's behavior makes a lot more sense. Especially backing Trump and teaming up to knock the Muslims around. Russia is in really bad trouble.

I don't think this will scale well vs the population decline. What's more likely is a huge backlash against ethnic Russians some hears down the line. I wouldn't put it past Putin to eventually reaort to genocide to bring the Muslim population down.

Israel's ambassador to the UK has apologised after a senior member of his staff was secretly filmed saying he wanted to "take down" Foreign Office Minister Sir Alan Duncan.
Israeli Embassy senior political officer Shai Masot made the comment in footage filmed in a London restaurant and obtained by the Mail on Sunday.
He told a reporter that Sir Alan was creating "a lot of problems".

Sir Alan, who has described expanding Israeli settlements as a "stain on the face of the globe", was seen as more of a problem than Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson - who was "basically good", according to Mr Masot in a transcript of the conversation.
"He just doesn't care. He is an idiot but has become minister of foreign affairs without any responsibilities. If something real happened it won't be his fault... it will be Alan Duncan."

The Trump transition team is doing as much as possible to bypass the government ethics office. They're not really helping with clearance checks for potential cabinet positions and the TTT is making the GEO work overtime because of a constrained schedule.

I wonder if anyone is going to be able to tabulate just how badly we're going to get robbed over the next few years.

This entire crisis where we can't staff our own offices is so terrible and nobody could have seen it coming. Such a wasteful and slow process, we should defund it entirely and get government out of the way of progress (towards burning the country down and looting the ashes).

Also how chameleon or mercenary Hillary is, and how Trump's father and upbringing made him tough and a "killer".
This is not the conclusions as the doc hasn't finished yet.

as the world turns
Senate Republicans are currently deathly afraid of Trump going rogue if one of his cabinet nominees go down. So, they're doing some funny poo poo, like holding confirmation hearings (not votes) for six nominees on the same day, which also happens to be the date of Trump's first press conference (the 11th). So everyone's basically agreeing that it's bound to be a lovely PR day, so they're flooding the zone with terrible, so Democrats can't make noise and/or sink a nominee in committee.

The problem is that there are a whole lot of ethics laws that apply to cabinet nominees (and not the president). Also, Trump's people have been incredibly lazy in their vetting, since they mostly don't care. The only way their nominees get taken out is if Senate Republicans defect.

With that said, this morning Mitch McConnell (R-turtle) said there would be no full confirmation votes until the ethics office has weighed in completely and that Democratic complaints are 'procedural issues'.

The scandals of the new administration are going to be incredible.

I don't think they give a gently caress if Trump goes "rogue" because they have the ability to impeach him and get good ol' rubber stamp Pence in charge.

I have no doubt that Trump already has committed impeachable acts and it's just a matter of proper subpoenas to reveal it. He will only be in office as long as it's convenient for Republicans.

Don't overestimate how much it matters in the short term though. Recent events have shown just how short the American voter's attention span is, and there's very few competitive R-held seats up for election in 2 years. 4 years is a looooooong time away.
