I suppose all the toddlers who drowned in Australian pools this summer were faked too. My point being that a drowned and well dead toddler isn't that hard a commodity to come by. Getting its agent to allow a photo shoot might be more problematic. His gotcha being the child is still alive and well just hits the truth bell and goes boioing.

My best guess is that once the dust settles the actual debt identified will be in the tens of millions not billions and the costs associated with all the appeals (when taken across the whole of government) will vastly out strip it. I base this from having worked in the debt recovery area of a revenue raising department. You can't employ all the staff you need to recover all the debt there becomes a point of diminishing returns. This whole plan looks like some consultant from private enterprise punched in a bunch of numbers came up with the 4 billion dollar figure and then did a power point presentation to the Minister over the objections of all of the departmental staff present.

:agreed:

It's also possible that the vast majority of "debts" don't even exist (since they can't even show the working out) and legal action on behalf of adversely affected citizens will go on for years.

My Little Tony: Leadership is Magic
Seems like they hoped that they could get away with the same strategy that Dutton uses whenever more evidence arises that offshore processing centres are literally hell comes up - repeat the narrative until people stop caring and go away. Works when the issue is only affecting a few brown people, and when there's only the occasional blip on the radar to tell people what's happening.

Except this is affecting shitloads of people, enough of whom are complaining to their MP/the media that the pressure to do something about it won't just wither away, and if they're planning to send out that many more notices it's only going to get worse.

How long does the ombudsman usually take to look into things? I look forward to them being told by an independent body that their system is a shambles that is aggressively targeting people they're not even likely going to get much money from.

ewe2

I wouldn't be surprised if they made moves to prevent the ombudsman from investigating, perhaps also promising an inquiry that doesn't sit until late in the year and doesn't report until after the next election. Of course that won't do a blind bit of good with the electorate.

I'M CONCERNED ABOUT A NUMBER OF THINGS

I guess my letter is in the mail as I worked a casual job while on Austudy.

What is the best way to deal with it when it arrives?

Can I just ignore it because I'm no longer receiving payments? I'm working full time now, can I (or my work) invoice them for the time I spend waiting in line to talk to someone?

The answer is no you can't ignore it. And as the word from on high today is forbidding actual people helping with it, you're pretty hosed and will have to go online. All a part of preventing you from getting your money back and menacing you with debt collectors.

notmydebt.com.au is sharing stories and urging people to lodge a dispute immediately, they link to legal services and how to make a complaint and contact the ombudsman.

the AUWU http://unemployedworkersunion.com/ are only concentrating on the JSA side of the coin, so unless your previous JSA have important details that can assist your dispute, they aren't much help right now.

Are you happy now?
foster carers with 38 children notified of debt

quote:

How do you feel about the way the Government has handled this process?:

I don't know why my wife and I were targeted in this letter writing campaign. This has affected our family, foster kids included to not be able to get the parenting payment again. My question is simply, there are a lot of other people on the dole and all kinds of welfare that are undeserving of such payments. Why not go after them? There are so many people that are doing wrong...why not go after them? It took about 1 1/2 hours on the phone for the mess to be fixed. I don't remember the ladies name that I spoke with, but she was more than helpful. A few days ago, she sent me a letter that said that the matter had been resolved. Still, my wife and I should have not ever been flagged by Centrelink. I am not very happy with what Centrelink is doing.

And that is why they think it won't lose them the next election.

However, going after 1.7 million people over the next 18 months might be enough to do it. Then again, I guess Shorten's holiday is too important to interfere with.

Shorten is a grey man. Which while nice for him personally is not the best personality type as leader of the main opposition party.

We seriously need more viable political parties in this country.

The Institute of Public Affairs were kind enough to send me through their report…
Section 18C of the Racial Discrimination Act has functioned well for more than 20 years. It has served a crucial role in the development of our modern, multicultural Australia.
18C is there to protect all Australians and 18D is there to protect free speech in artistic works, scientific debate and comment on matters of public interest.
So the real question is this: what kinds of racially motivated things do Malcolm Turnbull, the Liberals and the IPA want to say that they’re not allowed to right now?

EVERY Australian would be forced to apply for an identity card – unlocked by their fingerprint – under Pauline Hanson’s plan to crackdown on welfare fraud.

The One Nation leader is pressuring the Turnbull Government to accept her policy, which she says is needed to stop welfare overpayments and fraud.

Senator Hanson has told the Government the card would be voluntary but essential if recipients wanted to keep receiving their dole, family tax benefit or child care payments.
