Eripsa is a pH.d candidate at some horribly unfortunate school. He routinely posts far out, verbose, over optimistic "researched" solutions to social/ network issues that he solicits feedback on.

People usually point out the holes in his assumptions, or how wildly impractical his solutions are, promoting some vigorous defenses.

His most popular post was about the "attention economy", and led to some amazing fanfic about giant fighting robots.

We're pretty much waiting to see him snap, get thrown out of academia, or go full TimeCube pursuing one of his ideas.

I think somebody realized you could just air TED talks and maybe like an interview with the speaker (maybe? I don't listen to it) and that would fill an hour of air time and you could sell it to people.

I think it's a disservice to mention eripsa and Timecube together. Timecube is a masterpiece of insanity, while eripsa is just a nerd who thinks he can create a utopian community with this one weird trick set of mathematical formulas. His situation is much more mundane, yet actually more dangerous: this kind of stuff sounds like Gospel to certain sets in Silicon Valley, so craziness like his has a non-zero chance of become real products.

And he has already gone chasing after some of his stuff. He was/is involved with Synereo, an in-development social network that is basically a mashup of Facebook, Freenet, and the reputation system from Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom, all tied together with a Bitcoin-like e-currency. His "attention economy" thread is more accurately described as a thread about ideas for Synereo, and was a complete trainwreck. Many goons pointed out that a system like Synereo could be used by violent hate groups and child porn traders, and eripsa repeatedly refused to answer almost any questions about things like this. One of the only answers he gave was just "well it's a distributed system, thus we can't prevent terrorists from using it or someone from putting child porn on it" as if this closed the topic. I don't think he ever answered questions about things like "did you consider any design choices for Synereo that would prevent people from using it for these purposes" or "do you think it is morally OK for you, personally, to design a system that child pornographers can use to evade law enforcement". It's some really :gonk: stuff IMO.

Yeah, he's been dodging the real tough questions here as well. Such as the fact the poor and disenfranchised are basically poo poo out of luck when it comes to his Rings of Interest Reputation based governance. Even *if* every other thing about this wasn't unworkable bullshit, you'd need to devote so much time online to cultivate your online authority and reputation you'd enter a feedback loop where that's all you'd ever be able to do if you wanted any kind of voice.
