well, mahouka volume 18 turned out to be mostly one of the boring ones rather than the hilariously terrible ones. you know, the usual stuff with the dozen or so unreciprocated romances going on and on and on, horrific crimes against mankind being briefly mentioned and then glossed over because no one cared, straw man protests against the supposedly benevolent ubermensch that were of course incited by nefarious foreigners. like i said, the usual. there were a couple high points, though. for one, the author spent a couple pages explaining what fatigue is, including its causes and effects. another was this amazing work of art: quote:"All's fair in love and war" was a popular phrase that originated from a no one actually said that phrase or anything like it, either. the narrator brought it up on his own and then tediously explained that this aphorism is not literally true.

That whole segment was even dumber due to the fact that nothing occurred to justify the narrator bringing up the phrase, even. It was people just talking about the the usual "Tatsuya is unexpectedly(?) perfect at this academic exercise we were doing, wow!"

I dropped It Seems Like I Got Reincarnated into the World of a Yandere Otome Game a while back because it seemed like it was going to be pretty typical, but upon checking it on a whim it actually went somewhere. Also it's nearly done, though with the translation speed I woudn't expect it to actually finish anytime soon.

Is a yandere otome game an otome game where the protagonist is yandere or the main love interest guy?

Other way around, the MC was a yandere while the protagonist is normal.

Dungeon Defense is updating again. One of the best written novels out there if you can stomach the level of cynicism and dark overall tone. It's one of my favorites.

Mahouka would actually almost be good if the last chapter consisted of Tatsuya just screaming about how he hates everyone/everything and nuking the whole planet. Just some multi-page monologue where he tells his sister how he's always hated her and can't take it anymore.

I reread the Mahouka thread now and again as a reminder to think hard before I discuss a creative work seriously, especially because my higher education is sorely lacking in areas around literature. Being the WickedHate of a thread would be a bad time. My favorite part of the anime nowadays is imagining Tatsuya as one of Yuichi Nakamura's other characters, like

I think my favorite part about Konosuba is how silly the climaxes sound out of context. In this volume, Kazuma gets serious and drives a casino into bankruptcy.

Well I could make it sound sillier by fully describing the situation, but then I'd spoil the entire volume.

Just the ones that are hostile to he & and his sister, which is all of them so far because they are an inherently treacherous and envious race. But really, the most damning thing I can level against the volumes I read is that it somehow made a story about a Chinese Triad sabotaging the wizard olympics incredibly dull and uninvolving. Mahouka is.................. bad

it turned out that an angry mob attacking a chinese ghetto because china invaded with just enough force to accomplish nothing was completely justified and that they should have followed through and burned every inferior foreigner alive. the guy who talked the mob down from butchering defenseless civilians of chinese descent was actually the villain who was behind the invasion despite that not really making sense. that scene also ignored how a mob of magicians shouldn't be able to accomplish much of anything because all their spells should interfere with each other.

owl milk posted:If we're talking about Harry Potter fanfic then you should read this series. It's fanfic in that it's set in the same world as Harry Potter but the characters are entirely original and it's set starting in 2007 I think. Very good but the author stopped after finishing the 4th book and has had "writer's block" since then. Still a great read imo. I finally finished all of this and I thought the overall story was interesting, but the main character is insufferable in a way that's completely opposite from the way HPATMOR Harry is insufferable; it's like in an effort to avoid making the character a Mary Sue the author goes out of their way to have the main character make one poor and uninformed decision after another. All things considered, it's too bad the author seems to have quit--I enjoyed it enough that I'd still read another volume, as the new status quo will probably make it easier to swallow the mc's neverending streak of terrible life choices.

tbf her terrible choices aren't entirely her fault as people never told her the stuff she needed to know to make a better decision. Except for the times when she did something dumb out of pigheadedness, but hey she's young I'll forgive it

Ascendance of a Bookworm is so ridiculously good. It's really in a completely different league from all the other web novels I've read. I felt so proud for those kids once they finally succeeded in making the paper. I also liked how Lutz figuring out Maine's secret was dealt with. He reacted in a pretty realistic and reasonable way, all things considered. Thanks so much for continuing to translate it blastron!

Oh finally some Bookworm discussion. I'd also like to thank you; if you hadn't translated all the chapters you did, I wouldn't have been motivated to read ahead. I'm pretty slow, and it takes me about 3-4 hours (with copious amounts of help from darkgray and GG) to get through a chapter, but my reading abilities have improved greatly since starting, and I've learned about 250 new kanji in doing so (bringing me to a very meager 1050). I'm at chapter 64 now since I started reading ahead from 30, and I still use your translations to assess how well I understood whatever is going on. Only 700 more chapters to go!

Kumoko novel v05 is releasing on February 10 Maybe we'll get some more regular updates of the web novel after that. The author said they were planning to finish the story in 2016, and Kumoko's timeline has almost caught up to where Shun's chapters stopped now, so there probably aren't many chapters left.

I wonder if she's ever going to come out to her parents like she did (after pressure) to Lutz. I can't imagine that going over nearly as well as it did wtih him. It worked with Lutz because he barely even knew Maine before her body was taken over by Urano, but her family would (justifiably) flip their poo poo if they found out she wasn't actually their daughter for the past year+.

I'm guessing whats-her-face on the cover of volume 4 is meant to be the teacher with the annoying vocal tic who reincarnated as an elf? Based on Blastron's translations it's a better execution of the trope than I would have expected, but I still get this throbbing pain in my temple whenever I have to read a lot of her dialogue at once.

I subscribe to the theory she puts forward near the start that she was a legit reincarnation from birth, and her memories somehow got shocked back into her because of The Devouring, which would be less of a problem since it's more of Maine + weird memories rather than her completely overwriting the real Maine. I get really anxious for her to invent a new thing when it becomes obvious it's something she could and should invent--I'm close to the end of the first arc and she still hasn't even considered inventing upholstery! Future chapter title spoilers and from browsing some of the future chapter titles (that I haven't read yet) there's like a hundred chapters between her coming up with the idea of opening a restaurant, and actually opening the restaurant.
