Jiminy Christmas! Shoes! posted:If you drove on a road covered entirely in black ice, unless you drove some ridiculously slow speed - like 5mph - the moment you attempted to make a turn you'd keep sliding forward and end up in a ditch on the side of the road. If the pavement was shiny and it was cold some people will call that black ice. I've seen the "thick sheets of glassy smooth ice on everything" tier of ice storm aftermath and gently caress that poo poo.

The 1998 Ice Storm up in the Northeast was pure insanity. My suburbs north of Montreal were hit hard enough to lose power for anywhere from 1 to 7 days, but the south shore had some areas go without power for over a month. The wiki page posted:Millions were left in the dark for periods varying from days to several weeks, and in some instances, months. It led to 35 fatalities, a shutdown of activities in large cities like Montreal and Ottawa, and an unprecedented effort in reconstruction of the power grid. The ice storm led to the largest deployment of Canadian military personnel since the Korean War, with over 16,000 Canadian Forces personnel deployed, 12,000 in Quebec and 4,000 in Ontario at the height of the crisis. ![]()

Are studded tires a thing in the US? In my native frozen wasteland they are the traditional winter tire, studless (traction) ones are good too but don't work as well on ice. The downside of studs is that they chew up the roads. Never seen anything like those ice storm pictures though. Fire Safety Doug fucked around with this message at 00:07 on Jan 14, 2017 |

I drove on a highway that was a sheet of ice for fourty miles at 45mph and almost died when I spun out and plowed into a snowbank. It took me a half hour to regain composure to drive again. Ice is no joke avoid if possible goons

Ice and snow deserve the utmost respect when you're driving, the only time I ever hit another vehicle was on a particularly icy day (they just drove off)

You don't need chains or studs to drive on ice, all you need are zip ties.
