When I was in China last a local Beijing TV station started doing a "man on the street" style interview with a member of my wedding party while showing my guests around the city. At first, the interview was normal asking where he was from, what he thought of china, all very touristy stuff. Then, after about 6 fluff questions the next question was a two part "Do you recognize the incredible and unbelievable sacrifices the CCP made to single-handedly defeat the Japanese during WWII and do you think Japan can ever truly atone for the unforgiveable atrocities they committed against the Chinese people?"

He backed away without saying another word.

Alaska is embarrassing to teach about because the Japanese invaded, then left before the American response force showed up (because the islands were useless frozen rocks and the whole point was to plant a Japanese flag on American soil), then the Navy bombarded empty islands for a while and a bunch of guys died during the landings from accidents or friendly fire. Not exactly America's finest hour.

I sort of like bottle opener, but the tower is just too. . . stark. I'm with you, it's ugly (or at least until the skyline fills in a bit).

Last week, China announced that it had mastered the art of making ballpoint pens. Don't laugh: It was a years-long effort that cost millions of dollars and required the leadership of a state-run corporate colossus.

:10bux: says the real reason it took this long was that everyone contracted to make it decided to sub-contract it, and got "Chinar'd". Why else would you need the CCP to get involved? (to stop the corner-cutting and get it made to save face)

there is a 100% chance that the tower was built for dumb idiot prestige rather than because it's a good and necessary place for a building that needs to be large

plenty of american skylines have ugly buildings. Every time I drive towards dallas I'm reminded of that. But nothing in this country looks as ridiuclously terrible as that beijing skyline, i'm sorry. We may have individual buildings in competition with individual buildings in beijing but the overall failure of the skyline, there's no american competition.

I think Shenzhen is often prettier than the others because it's not located on swamp land and it has hills nestled right in the city so no matter where I go I can walk or see a mountain or green natural thing (besides the tons of trees everywhere).

Some Google stuff:

Looking towards DaNanshan day and night

Futian and it's dumb gay golf course wasting city space, and looking towards Wutong Shan (like almost 1km high or something).

Lizhi (lychee) park

And a photo I took with my phone. That big tower is the 4th tallest on Earth:

To be fair I was remembering Kiska, which was like that, and forgetting about Attu, where there was actually an invasion and fighting on the ground. That probably comes up more in history classes in Alaska.

In California we did learn about the Battle of LA, when a bunch of spooked anti-air gunners shot at nothing for hours.
