More prizes have been added! All finalists get a copy of Tabletop Simulator to keep or give to a friend (say one you want to play board games or RPGs online), and store credit for DTRPG ($10 for 5th Place, $15 for 4th and 3rd Place, $20 for second and $35 for the over-all winner). I've also updated the rules to include 8 finalists instead of 4, so yay!

Sweet. That actually sounds pretty awesome. Oh, by the way, do we get a mulligan on our genre if we get one that we've never seen before? Like, for example, I've never sat down to watch an anime sports series in my life and don't have the time to watch one for research. So, if I get that one, it'd be a little hard to work with. Or is that against the spirit of the contest? Oh, also, when do the first 8 get their genres?

Yeah, it's something to consider, I was wondering what I would do if I get something I'm unfamiliar with. (Do what all RPG publishers do and fake it, I guess.)

How would you all feel about getting your genres early (today, and whenever anyone else signs up), but getting the modifier at the start of week one?

I assumed I was going to have to watch something new as my anime history consists of Ninja Scroll, Spirited Away, Cowboy Bebop, and Samurai Shamploo. Gonna start looking for the standouts in the genre as soon as I know what it is.

Just for clarity's sake, what does "modifier" entail? Is it a theme that all works need to hew towards, or a character they all need to have, or a plotline they all need to use?

You should definitely hand genres out to the people participating earlier rather than later, just to give them time to do "research."

Yeah, I'm definitely not going to object to giving people time to figure out their genres. If people make bad games, it shouldn't be because they didn't know what they were aiming for.

Davin Valkri posted:Just for clarity's sake, what does "modifier" entail? Is it a theme that all works need to hew towards, or a character they all need to have, or a plotline they all need to use? It's an extra requirement: The games must be ultra-violent, or the games must be made for short campaigns (that can be played over three to five session, perfect length for a convention or spring break). It could even be a requirement that your game uses some thing that can be sold separately (such as using a deck of cards for resolution, or involving the use of a particular prop - up to the game creator as to what would be used). But regardless, unlike an anime genre everyone needs to involve it in their game Which brings us to tonight: I'll be posting everyone's assigned genres in a couple of hours (I just need to get some more work done and compile the finished list). Feel free to register for a trial of Crunchyroll to use for research. The rest of the contest will continue as scheduled, with the cut-off for signing up being January 28th at 11:59p CST. If you sign up after everyone got their genres, no worries: I'll assign you one on the spot (or as soon as I see your post).

OHMYFRIENDTHEREISSOMUCH - Getter Robo ("New Getter Robo" as it's known in the USA is my favorite version) - Godannar (watch it with a special someone, the pilots are married) - Giant Robo (the robot is Pharaoh themed) - Kotetsu Jeeg (the main guy becomes the loving robot's head, the rest is a shell) - Mazinger Z (also, any Go Nagai series with robots is a good fit) - Aura Battler Dunbine (Fantasy Robot Suits) - GaoGaiGar (the main character is voiced by Dean Venture's voice actor in the English dub) - Linebarrels of Iron (Dying kid becomes Robot man who's strength is based on his belief in himself) Gunbuster. loving watch it. And the sequel Daibuster. And, there is exactly one Gundam series that works for this genre:

If this is too generic, I can offer something a little different to anyone unsatisfied with their genre. I have a backup that didn't wind up on the list. EDIT: Error 404 posted:Ok, so do you mean like detective/perky kids/ scooby doo type mystery here? Like solving a crime? "Another" is a good example of this. While it is a horror series, the unraveling understanding of what is happening is a great example of mystery. remusclaw posted:Thank you. Looks like I have a lot of research to do. They share some similarities. I'd define Giant Robot about faith in oneself and bonds with others enabling you to overcome the impossible, while Sentai being about faith and relationships with others enabling the group to overcome a great many foes. So, different clothing on siblings I guess. Biggest difference is team size, in my opinion: Giant Robot taps out at around 2-3, Sentai traditionally is 5 or more.
