If somebody manages to make an RPG as chill as Mushi-shi I would never play anything else. Golden Sky Stories comes really close but isn't quite there.

Man, I got a good genre. This'll be my first time designing an RPG, so I wanted to keep it simple and romance basically demands a storygame approach. The gears are already turning for something like a PbtA.

Oh man magical girl is one of those genres that I think could really go places, but I actually don't think I know much about it outside of Madoka and maybe a little Sailor Moon from back in the day. What's a good crash course in weird magical girl anime? I figure I'm already a good way in after Madoka.

Sailor Moon is, of course, the big mamma jamma of magical girls, but Precure is also a big juggernaut in the genre (I recommend Heartcatch Precure to start with) Also, for the people who got Sentai/Tokusatsu, a good short crash course would be the first season of Unofficial Sentai Akibaranger. It's an official parody series that knocks on both otaku culture and basic Sentai tropes. For actual series, where Sentai is concerned, Gokaiger, Kyoryuger, and the current series Zyuohger are pretty good places to start, and for Kamen Rider, W, OOO, and Fourze are really good bets. Another good example of the genre which is on Crunchyroll is Cardcaptor Sakura. If you have the new Amazon channel Strike you can also watch the various Nanoha series, which are magical girl shows rife with mecha references. Edit: and Plutonis with an actually good suggestion. If you're going to watch more than one magical girl show, one of those should be Princess Tutu. Kwyndig fucked around with this message at 03:01 on Jan 20, 2017 |

(To be fair, even the older series can be pretty cluttered; Dairanger, the series that followed Zyuranger, is a hot mess of weird half-finished plots.) Carranger is also great, although maybe less of a beginner series, because it's pretty goofy and has elements of parody. (yes, yes, I know, nerd trap sprung)

Also Shinkenger is a great example of the kinds of character relationships and dynamics that can be useful for an RPG in that genre. It was the Sentai I started with, so it's beginner friendly, plus they're samurai-themed and poo poo.

Exactly, plus it's fun to compare between it and Power Rangers for the differences and similarities between them(Jason and Geki are pretty much the only two counterparts between the two groups of Rangers to have anything in common for example, and there's a lot of differences between Rita Repulsa and her group and that of Witch Bandora and her Dora Monsters) Also I guess I'm throwing my hat into the ring for this challenge, hopefully I get a good genre to fit with the system I'll probably use(most likely some variation of OSR system)

Davin Valkri posted:Can I request some examples of how this will be judged? All of the anime I can think of of the type (Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, Ponyo, Devil is a Part Timer, To me, the genre is best represented by having an individual (or individuals, such as a group of players) put into a situation they are unprepared for, and force them to use the skills they do have (along with luck, tenacity, and teamwork) to get through the situation. Plutonis had a great idea for implementing this, though it was based on both Fish / Fishes Out of Water and Fantasy. An example of an existing game that does that (though in a non-anime way) is Level 99 Games "Infinity Dungeon" - In it, each player draws a different character card to play as, such as these: ...then the players have to get through dungeon rooms like these with just the items and skills that the characters have on their persons: That is more-or-less what I consider the genre of Fish / Fishes Out Of Water. Do something with that kind of contrast, and you'll be fine. Does that help?
