EXTREMELY PISSED AT THE DNC
Cross posting from the C-Spam DPP thread. I saw in the news Congresswoman Carol Shea-Porter was skipping the inauguration.

That spurred me to contact my own Congresswoman Annie Kuster and the Senators to urge them to join their fellow NH rep in skipping.

I'm in DC, staying at St Stephens episcopal. I did rainbow nationals, the RNC, the Dnc, three months at standing rock, a couple weeks in cascadia, spent a week in Brooklyn (I was at the anarchists meeting that those alt-right veritas jerks published hidden video from) and I got to DC two days ago. What a time to be alive; what a place to take up space!

Trip Report:

I went to a protest up in Manchester, NH. Antifas were the largest group there, followed by the Socialist Alternative. I think the Antifas might have scared away some of the less radical people who showed up before they got there. I'd say 30ish people?

Chanted a bit. Marched down two blocks. Chanted a bit there. Marched back to starting point. They started having people speak, but I left cause I didn't want to drive home in the dark. Met some cool people.

I think most people I talked to planned to head down to Boston tomorrow. Which kinda disappointed me. I plan to head to Concord.

We flew in last night from Vancouver, BC. Seemed all of our plane from Seattle to Baltimore was coming for the Woman's March tomorrow, not for the inauguration. It's been great so far...Found that every single person just small talking about where we're from is excited about the march.

We heard there were 250,000 at the inauguration. I will laugh heartily if more show up tomorrow. Almost that many are estimated.

Inauguration was pretty rad. Saw where some anarchists smashed up stuff. Got a whiff of some tear gas. Fun stuff.

Today protests in Portland had multiple people burning the American flag. It is their right, they will face no legal repercussions and they certainly should not. That said, god drat is it loving stupid. What kind of total loving moron concedes the symbols of patriotism to a authoritarian threat to democracy? It isn't his flag, he doesn't care about American history, ideals, or citizens. Don't do his work for him by making it easy to paint you as anti-american.

Please, if/when you protest adopt the imagery and symbols that resonate with your average american. That's who you're actually trying to influence.

The problem is that every one rear end in a top hat that sets a car on fire negates 50,000 people in peaceful protest. The media, and just human brains, overemphasize the exciting to the exclusion of reality. It's why so many people think its a more violent and dangerous world today than it was when they were kids despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary.

I do agree with you in a practical sense- I would never personally burn a flag in public, because it's kind of the debate equivalent of a slap in the face in that it's only a gesture to be galvanizing, it has no greater meaning. That having been said... the rhetoric behind this candidate and his campaign, and his immediate actions after taking office, is a direct assault on the personhood of many, many people, and that's on top of law enforcement rhetoric that holds that some lives are more equal than others. There's years and years of this stuff, and if you perpetually feel like you're about to die and no one in the larger community will care or even notice... that might make one a little angry. A riot is the language of the unheard after all, and while I wouldn't riot myself (as I largely have no reason to riot... yet), I'm not going to look down on or disparage the practice of using the smaller inconveniences of a human blockade or or a broken newspaper vendor to illu8strate the larger inconvenience of being shot.

I agree with you. That being said, Martin Luther King Jr. also engaged in some actions that were shocking and galvanizing at the time, so always let's keep an open eye to more than just the surface level effects.

That being said, it doesn't matter what we do to avoid slander. Our opposition, the corporation funded white nationalist agenda that Trump champions, will always paint us as un-American and will actually hire people to infiltrate our rallies and stir up violence and shocking actions in order to discredit us. What we need to do is find ways to preemptively defend against and defuse these types of attacks.

One way would be to find the correspondence of elites hiring miscreants to attend our rallies. Another way would be to take advantage of the flash mob technique, to instigate and curate a ready group of people to gather and demonstrate too quickly for the alt-right/corporatos to effectively orchestrate any disruptions.

Huffing and puffing about not doing stupid poo poo that aides our political enemies is one of the small ways I'm trying to diminish the amount of bad that President Trump is able to perpetrate. Do you have any suggestions to add?

I actually think that inconveniencing the public is one of the best tools nonviolent protesters have at their disposal. Even if it creates a negative association it forces attention to the subject matter from people that might otherwise be tuned out. Shutting down airports is probably my favorite of these methods.

Burning the flag is different in that it brings no value to a protest that is already happening. It only serves to paint the actor as a villain to a huge swath of the American public. Burning the flag concedes ground to Trumpers that they have no legitimate claim on. In my opinion some of the most effective attacks on this administration will be the myriad ways in which they violate cherished American norms.

Sidenote, you should totally burn an American flag when not publicly protesting. The flag looks rad as hell on fire and strikes just the right compliment for backyard fireworks on the 4th.

Trip report, just got back from anti-inaugural protest. I've never protested before so I'm not entirely sure how to evaluate it but considering it was flooding around the city and we were getting rained on I think the turnout was alright, the crowd was skewed a lot more young than the meetings. The folks in the businesses we walked by seemed very enthused, got a lot of waves and thumbs up and a few came out of the shops to fist pump, which made me feel hopeful that we have support and people are open to our message. Didn't see any counter protesters or anyone showing disgust or anything although there were some tensions with the police and I heard that some protesters were arrested in an earlier demonstration, although I'd heard a horror story about one of the guys who organized it so it wasn't completely unexpected. Some of the groups were a bit more on the divisive side of the left which worries me, stuff like "don't work with the Dems", I know there's a lot of debate on whether moderates can be reasoned with, I'm of the opinion that moderates are completely out of touch with the population at large and are incapable of mobilizing enough energized supporters for an opposition while they cater to an increasingly smaller group of people and ignore the ones who actually need them, but at the same time the left is not large or influential enough to gain the necessary popular support alone and the in-fighting within the far left breaks it up even further. Rather than bow to moderates I'd like to tap into the apathetic voters who don't feel represented and drag the few moderates on the fence to the left, and I think a unifying message towards progressive actions would be the most effective way to do that. I think part of what makes the empowered so successful at remaining in power to fudge the system despite being vastly outnumbered is that they pit groups that would otherwise unify and overthrow them against each other to weaken opposition, so trying to split into smaller groups or discouraging working together is not the best idea right now (not that there aren't times when you just have to though). Anyway, I'm still new at this stuff, sorry if this read like baby's first politic or something. My arms are sore from holding a flimsy wet sign up for 3 straight hours and my voice is hoarse from chanting and it feels good, I think it was important that we were out there and that people saw visible dissent (and apparently connected with it).

Yeah, wasn't sure what to think of provoking the police before they did anything, I'm naive enough to believe that because it's local and we've had some pretty good local wins this past year (including actually enforcing penalties for police brutality if I heard right at the last meeting) that it's not out of the realm of possibility to reform them, but at the same time this was an event for protesters to express their frustration at injustice and they're a symbol of oppression and a corrupt system for many people so I don't know. I'm still very ignorant about many issues and learning as I go.

I wish I could remember if I recognized you banner guys, definitely saw some familiar faces. Take care and rest if you need to, a lot of people did good tonight and the march is looking like it will be plenty big.

On a more local note, the protests in Boston went pretty well today. Nothing super dramatic happened, and we probably annoyed the hell out of a lot of people by being in the way, but we also inspired a lot of people as well, I think. Tomorrow ought to be even more exciting.
