I can't dispute that it doesn't really do anything particularly innovative, but it has fantastic atmosphere and it's very easy to just while away a few hours zooming about the desert, clearing fortresses or driving into a superstorm (the latter is particularly great).

It's pretty fun for as long as you want it to be, don't feel bad about dropping it when you get tired of it.

Otherwise, if you get it... I suggest FOCUSING on the main mission and doing as little of side poo poo as possible cause that will get you fatigued really quickly.
Don't upgrade any other fortresses besides your first one, they're all money sinks and you can just fast travel back and forth from the first one anyways.

It's a by the numbers open world game where you fight people with your car. That's not super common.

On the eve of Gravity Rush 2 coming out I am playing the original again and marveling at how unique its way of movement is. It's the only game I know where...

falling diagonally upwards

standing on the sides of buildings

and hurtling towards the ground at terminal velocity (knowing that you take no fall damage)

are all way more common than just running on the ground.

I, too, love the game where until you've ground up a shitload, your main mode of going from point to point has a tiny stamina bar that doesn't like to charge all that much.

I can't say I know what you're talking about; I didn't max out my energy bar but I could still go basically all the way across one of the city areas on one charge. Besides, if you run out you just freefall for a few seconds and get it all back.

Gravity Rush 2 is loving beautiful. I'm going to spend hours just trying to find the right shot of Kat hurtling sideways through the air.

Also it has a photo mode that I have just begun exploring

And the photo mode is integrated into a treasure hunting game where you take a picture of the treasure chest for other players to find.

Man, they (and Square, as of FF15) know what I like.

In all the Mad Max movies he's essentially a rogue with a heart of gold, he may be rough but he ends up doing the right thing. In this game he tries to "jump town", leaving 2 friendly characters to get tortured and killed, but then turns around so that he can drive the character you've been hanging out with the whole game into a truck and off a cliff, while the guy is on your hood, which doesn't even accomplish anything.

 Max?

That's a troll post right? Hope and Glory are probably-not-even-real metaphors for his own family, and the entire game is Max in Limbo/Purgatory. He's reliving his fears of stepping out on his own family, and the end of the game when he puts their picture on the dashboard of the Magnum Opus is him making peace. The Plains of Silence as a whole are probably a metahor, Max never leaves. Griffa is definitely not real as even Chumbucket says Max is just standing around spacing out and never actually goes anywhere - once Max maxes out his levels / transcends Griffa disappears. So Hope and Glory are dead in the art school way, and all that's left is for Max to continue to fight on forever alone. Chumbucket had to die because Max can never complete his attrition until he accepts his loneliness. It's actually a pretty good story, given that I had zero expectations for a random open world game.

On the other hand I basically just thought they ran out of time so they just decided to kill everyone relevant to the plot for some cheap drama and then had the main character deal with it because he has the emotional range of a halfbrick.

Also indicated by the fact that your plot motivation for about 70% of the game is "I want to unlock the tier 2 engine upgrades on my car" and then the last 20% has people in it.

You're not missing that much, it makes for cool screenshots but as a game it's about as by-the-numbers as they come. Not bad, just not particularly memorable either.
