Is the apple refurb store likely to have more 2015 Mbps in the very near future? I finally decided to pull the trigger and now they are gone when there was a whole array of different models available two days ago. Otherwise where is the best place to buy a 2015 model?

It's hard to predict exactly when as refurbs depend on users either returning / exchanging bought machines. Might be days, hours.

Apple is the best place to buy a refurb.

The fact that Apple doesn't carry anything upgraded in stores (like a 13 inch MBP with a 512GB SSD and 16 GB of RAM) has kept me from pulling the trigger on a new laptop. It's amazing what "You can't pick it up today" does for not plunking down $2K on a machine. I can wait to avoid Rev A boondoggles.

See if MacMall, B&H, or Best Buy have them. Bonus points for B&H since you might not get dinged with sales tax depending on where you live.

Yeah, I'm sitting at like 70% used on the 128gb MBA that my wife and I share.

I felt so data frugal but then I realized that between my desktop, htpc/server, and external HDD there's like 15tb of storage, most of it used.

The Anker batteries on Amazon are pretty decent and seem to last a long time. The cheaper ones on Amazon are all the same and if you're happy with it lasting around 200 ish cycles for around $30-40 then they're not a bad deal either.

I'm sure you were joking, but 6GB RAM and a battery that charges to full in ~22minutes for $400 is A+. I'm in love with the OnePlus 3.

Just unboxed a 5K iMac for live videography in the studio at work (using iMac for Dragon Frame stop motion and just the EOS live camera control utility for 5d MkIII) and had to plug in the mouse with lightning for a spell, rendering it unusable. What an odd thing to do. I hope it doesn't run out while we're in the middle of a shoot with the client. Will keep a wired backup nearby. When you're photographing beverages or things with dry ice you can't wait 5 min for mouse to charge.
5K iMac is also an awkward object to have to transport frequently; the bottom w/ air vents is like the cheese grater edge on the PalmPre. Does anyone use a particular carry case with 5K iMac, or travel with one? We could build out a giant pelican case I suppose.

Logitech MX master lasts a week off of a 20 minute charge, can be used whilst the miniUSB is plugged in, has two scroll wheels (one is flywheel) and back / forward buttons. It also looks pretty professional.

The second scroll wheel is easier for some people to use than the Apple mouse's touch system. You can probably game on it if you wanted. It's designed to fit the shape of a human hand.

They're the same price but to me it's a clearly better choice. Magic Trackpads are cool too.

Need advice: I'm considering getting a used MB Pro to replace my aging PC desktop setup. It looks like the 2011-era MBPs have specs that still hold up pretty well today (i7, 16GB RAM, discrete graphics for less than $600).

My thought was that I'd use the laptop docked most of the time, with an external keyboard mouse and monitor. However, I wanted to dual boot windows on it as well, and it looks like Windows 10 isn't supported on the 2011 MBPs, but it is on the 2012 versions. I have several NTFS hard drives from my desktop that I want to save and use in a dock or enclosure, so I'd prefer to use windows to manage my archives, as well as some light gaming.

One option I'm considering is just getting a 2012 MBP on eBay, which is more expensive than the 2011 models, and dual booting windows. The other option is that I get a 2011 MBP and bootcamp an earlier version of windows (likely 7). The third option is I get a 2011 MBP and a MS Surface Tablet and use that to handle my windows needs.

My goal is to keep all my spending below $1k, and ideally much less than that.

Do old MBPs hold up well? Can they tolerate long periods of stationary use? Any known issues? Can they manage Sierra?

Any other suggestions?

The 2011's will run Sierra fine, they (the 15" models) have one big problem - graphics card failure. The replacement program ended last month so you're footing the bill to replace the motherboard when it fails again.

The other problem is they are are only USB 2.0. And I refuse to use a non-Retina on a Mac laptop screen these days but you said you're going to use it docked so that might not bother you.

I have a mid 2012 Retina that's run with the lid closed almost its entire life, on its side, without any problems. It was the fastest Mac I could buy at the time without spending something like double on a Mac Pro for not that much more usefulness to me.

It depends on what you're using it for. I'l leave it to you to decide if a 5 year old laptop is a good replacement for a desktop for you.

That said, I was running Windows 10 on a 2009 MBP so I suspect a 2011 will be fine with it as well. You have to be able to go hunt down drivers on your own for some thigns.

Hadlock

I would really hesitate to buy a PC with less than Ivy Bridge these days (mid 2012). That gets you USB 3.0, and way, way better thermals (less fan noise) and about 30% better battery life over the 2011 era CPUs.

For about $850 you can get a brand new Dell XPS 13 with all the latest bits plus 10 hour real world battery life and a warranty with comparable specs to a 2011 era i7.

Khablam

'Light gaming' will be the understatement of the year for a 2011/2012 MBP. Anything released after 2009 is going to lag hard. The 2011 in particular is the one where the GPU would melt it's own solder if you used it for gaming.
If your budget is $1k you can afford a used MBP + a windows desktop that will outperform it by close to an order of magnitude for games.
You can hit mid-to-high graphics in modern games for $400-500
