the model culling is so insanely high in the 3ds version of DQ8 that you can actually use it to really easily farm metal slimes. just stand in a large open area where the kind of metal you want spawns, and spin the camera around until one spawns. it's actually hilarious

DQ7 3DS would have been made 10000% better instantly if it had the same aggressive culling.

Or if it would have slowed the enemies down. I swear they run faster than the party.

Two questions: first of all, what is the best way to deal with the squid boss monster? He kicked my rear end so hard that I don't have a witty comparison

He was super easy for me, I just had Yangus go into High Tension while MC healed and he died in 3 hits (and only the first one was in High Tension).

I may have been overleveled? They were both level 12 because I'd been wandering around doing all the camera quests.

A good way to deal with Khalamari if you're below level 11 is to take advantage of the fact that the ally AI is actually extremely good, because it decides what to do at the moment the character acts, not at the start of the turn. With healing in particular, that's great because a character can take a big hit and then get healed on the same turn, intelligently.

Given the whip nerf and the fact that we get two new physical (?) characters, I'm thinking I'll focus on magic for Jessica and Angelo. Are staves any good for them?

Is it just me or is the compression algo on the voices for DQ8 3DS just utter loving garbage? I thought 3DS carts could go up to 8GB, so I can't see why they would be so bad compared to what I remember from the PS2 version unless I'm misremembering that version.

I hope so because that's what I'm doing. The Staves tree looks real good.

Staves tree has been pretty good for me so far, Jessica gets Bounce and Magic Barrier pretty early on and just overall more MP when she has a staff equipped. Having had a chance to really use em yet, but getting Bounce at like Lv. 15 is wild

also when Jessica got a high enough staves skill the game said she became a Chief of Staff and I almost threw the game out the drat window

IIRC some of the stat seeds are better used as alchemy fodder than for their stat gains. Anyone have a primer on which ones are which?

Strength (Strength Ring), and Agility (Agility Ring) are probably the big ones. Arguably also Magic, so you can turn Gold Rings into Prayer Rings? They become available to buy at the same point, but Prayer Rings cost like 5x as much as Gold.

You shouldn't be using seeds for their stat gains early game anyway, though, due to the bizarre way level ups work; they check what the stat's supposed to be at at that level, and go to that. So using seeds will just give you a couple level gains early, essentially.

I should mention that agility rings can be bought for cheap at the Pickham casino, but strength rings are extremely limited. You can also make some really kickass stuff with them via alchemy that's way better than a small stat boost.

Speaking of great Dragon Quest writing, remember in 5 where you go to Zenethia or whatever looking for the Zenethia Dragon and meet a dude there named Dr. Agon and the bit goes on for like a whole dungeon? loving hell

Level ups don't work like that in DQ8, though. In DQ8 they're fixed through and through with no cap checks or anything complicated so you can use seeds all you want. And as I've said a lot throughout this topic, the caps weren't that strict in the games that do have them anyway to the extent that they only really existed in situations where the RNG loved you--who cares, you're still ahead so seed use mission still accomplished--or you were, for whatever reason, farming seeds before endgame which is its own can of wasteful worms. They're like +60 over the average before the cap sets in!

Forget the magic ship, 90% of the S-rank-worthy monsters require beating Rank B, first. And that's incredibly unlikely to be done until you reach Arcadia. And the only real exception, Talos, still needs you to beat Rank D and have the ship.

Any combo of big and tough monsters will generally get you through Rank D or so. Popular ones are Hackzilla near Farebury and Potbelly near Trodain. Pair them with something else meaty or a healer and you're set until then. Rank C can easily be solo'd by Talos.

Rank B, uh, you basically need Curer for, who's near Arcadia. It's technically possible with some combos (Talos, Dumbking, and Spike are the most popular one), but it requires some ridiculous luck.

Dumbking, who is to the east of Argonia, is a good pre-Arcadia pick too because he's strong, durable, and most importantly, can cast Oomph.

So I played a little bit of DQVI and otherwise have never played a dq game before now and I picked up dq8. Anything I should know going in? Only points I've allocated so far at lvl 6 were to get my MC up to level 2 in swords. Do I get enough points for all skills or should I be skimpy? Any early advantages or missables?

Being able to Zoom early can be handy, it only requires 8 points in Courage.
