"actually we just combined departments and now the new vp wants to offshore that group" "hiring freeze" and "just hired this guy we've known for like 10 years instead unexpectedly" job hunting is garbage

If it's to the US they'd likely be put somewhere else while the visa is pending. E.g. the Dublin office or London office (for now lol) for EU residents. This limbo period can easily take a year depending on the type of application they can get with their credentials. This is much less of a problem for countries with functioning governments tho

Took a screener/coding puzzle for a local nonprofit that places people from non-traditional educational backgrounds into apprenticeships, and bombed it hard. Everything that I ever learned flew out one ear, leaving me staring like an idiot at the screen. Just means I need to practice more, I guess. I never suffered from testing anxiety before, but I guess I must have picked it up.

at my last job it was a few hours of orientation then you were expected to work; at new job it sounds like a few days of orientation at least. i've interviewed places that were more like "were gonna bootcamp you internally for minimum six months before you touch anything of value" which was kinda cool tbh (then they offered me a deece 5 figgies for a fintech job)

this is kind of a weird situation because its a well established company but its a brand new office, they took back all their outsourced products and created this office to take ownership of them so like, everyone's been here less than 6 months. most have been here less than 2 months. maybe there's genuinely not much to do while the products are handed over from third parties, idk

welp they said they would have a decision by mon/tues, no email or phone call yet. I'm hoping the radio silence is just means they're slow/something came up. gonna fire off an email to their internal recruiter on Friday if I don't hear anything, all I want is a "we selected another candidate" so I'm not holding out hope

The recent grads would spend about 3 months going through all the departments and then they'd ask for a particular department where they liked the people or found the process interesting, and the departments had a chance to request certain new hires after they rotated through.

I find it depends a lot on the field, the company/culture, and your skill level. Most sane employers don't expect you to be anywhere close to productive in your first month unless you're a very expensive consultant explicitly being brought on for a specific job. most sane employers won't expect you to be self-sufficient until about six monthsish

If I'm not mostly self directing by the end of the first month something feels sideways. Maybe I should just try to bill myself as a very expensive consultant.

I started feeling productive-ish and contributing value by about end of month 2 here, seems pretty average to me not a dev, tho, i can see how dev could be a lot more sit down, set up buildchain, start coding than program management work
