San Andreas is the best GTA imo, but even so, that game was pretty much all about CJ getting dicked around by other people until the very end.

Ehh, there is some of that, but for every mission CJ gets dicked around on, there's another he's cool with, and still another he outright initiates. And he at least seems to be having fun on some of them, unlike Niko or Marston.

A fair chunk of the San Fierro and Las Venturas missions are at CJ's initiative, or at least have some spin of his devising in the mix like getting the rival Tong to follow his car out of town while Woozie gets out of dodge safely. Even the ones where he's forced into doing stuff usually at least imply he's doing it his/your own way.

I like the people who complain that Borderlands 2 is literally nothing but memes, but their definition includes completely original jokes and callbacks to those jokes.

This is some sort of weird thing that gets spread around by people who have never played it. When it started coming up repeatedly about a year after the game came out, I thought it seemed odd that it didn't match my experience with the game it all so I looked it up. There's a big list of references the game makes on its wiki and the actual meme section is this tiny part at the bottom which almost entirely consists of challenge names and short enemy lines you're pretty unlikely to even hear. None of it is in quest dialogue.

This would belong in the other thread, but one of my pet peeves is when games simultaneously deride and include a game element. It's not funny to talk about how sewer levels suck, but it's especially not funny to talk about how sewer levels suck in a sucky sewer level. If you're going to make the joke in the first place, have the protagonist refuse to go into the sewer or something.

For content: I've been playing Guild Wars 2 lately, and I love how organic the quests can get with all the different ways they show up. I just finished an hour-long chain of events that I found while trying to log a waypoint and was probably the most fun I've had doing an escort quest. (It helps that, by and large, the escortees were competent, and worst-case scenario I could revive them after clearing out the area.) And I didn't have to officially accept any quests or wait my turn to get my ten pristine frog ears or whatever; the first event in the chain was already in progress, and I just chipped in. Other players showed up at various parts, did what interested them, and wandered off.

Even though I barely play GW2 anymore (beta plus 3 years is enough), I will defend their mission style and say that it is the best MMO to date. Everything is so natural and fluid.

To be fair, any amount of using memes as a replacement for original humor is loving unacceptable.

I want to care, butt I dont
Me, my wife and brother in law all got Borderlands 2 for free and are playing throught it now for the first time and it's definitely not very meme-y in a reference sense. I dont even know if i've caught a reference to a meme, maybe a throwaway line? Tiny Tina is a little too "lol random" but the humor is mostly just goofy hit or miss.

I loved adventuring in GW2. Other MMO's just kind of feel like there's an area in between quest hubs, but GW2 had so much stuff to discover and cool cosmetic rewards for completing areas. I really think they knocked it out of the park and if their dungeons had of been better they would have utterly killed it.

Best subscription style as well

People are conflating memes and references. The latter being technically different from the former is what the writers latched onto and whinged about to deflect criticism.

The memes where terrible but the story itself was also very weak, it also completely ruined the older characters as well, Lilith in particular was just a junkie and it was just odd that Roland gets killed given the context of the world, and the explanation of it was that the new U's aren't actually canon or something.

It didn't help that some pre-sequel's dialogue just seemed like sour grapes.

The loot was completely terrible as well, its like they where trying to make it pseudo MMO and it just didn't work at all. The higher difficulties where just horrifically unbalanced, no testing seemingly went into them.

I'd describe BL2 as aggressively mediocre, good for one playthrough but not much else.

Yeah, the writer has no idea what the word 'canon' means outside of fandom definitions, and doesn't want to take credit for accidentally building a really interesting little society of immortals. The plot holes could have been papered over with a line about disconnecting someone from the system or him literally having no money or whatever else, but no, "that whole thing in the game doesn't loving exist" is easier.

Goddamn why am I still mad about that.

I think I mentioned it in this thread before, but the first time I played BL2, I figured Hyperion was luring vault hunters and hiring people to kill them to nickle-and-dime their way to even more riches, and thought that was really clever. I came up with a more clever plotline than the writers of BL2 by ACCIDENT.

EDIT for content since I forgot this wasn't the dragging things down thread: In Dead by Daylight, if you're playing as a survivor, the camera is in front of the four survivors with yourself in the center, so you can see which character everyone's playing as.

If you're playing as the killer, the camera view is roughly 20 feet behind the survivors' camera, behind the head of your killer. Even before the game has actually started, they know you're off screen watching them and they can't see you :unsmigghh:

I'm still slightly irritated by what they did with Torque in TPS. In Borderlands 2 the joke was that this hyper macho, hyper muscular, hyper testosterone-laden lunkhead was actually a perfect gentleman who was the most progressive character in the entire game. It was organic, funny and made the banter in missions and free roam interesting to listen to.

In The Pre-Sequel they have him ranting about the concepts of friendzoning and misogyny while you trudge through grey corridors. Like c'mon guys, you already had a great concept there, don't turn him into an actual lecture.

This would make complete sense. Jack wants you dead, but he's so confident that you're no true threat to him and that he can kill you whenever he wants that he doesn't bother disconnecting you from the new U stations, and at the end he dies because Angel disconnected him. Or they could have made the New U stations be run by one of the other interplanetary megacorporations, who don't care about Jack wanting you dead but Jack himself refuses to use the inferior products of a competitor.

This contributed to one of my favorite moments in that game, towards the end. You open a door out onto a big tunnel. One side is a dead end, the other side has some soldier shooting at you incredibly ineffectually from a long distance away. So you head that way and BAM a strider pops out behind you and poo poo poo poo gotta run for cover. Describing it makes it sound really uninteresting but at the time it was really exciting.
