You're trying to use low hormone levels and superior vision as an insult?Samovar posted:I've never heard that. Is there a paper that discusses that? I don't have a link to any specific case studies, but the demographics and genetic factors are fairly clear. 8.3% of (human) males have some sort of colour deficiency, while the rate is only 0.5% for females. The kindergarten explanation is that males (XY) are more vulnerable to genetic damage and defects than females (XX), as the X chromosome contains all of required genetic information for a human being and the Y mostly modifies that being into an emotionally stunted, overly muscled, generally hairy being. Two X chromosomes means a second chance if one has a nonfunctional gene. It's also exceedingly rare for humans to have serious deficiencies seeing blue light generally, being unable to distinguish the green shades from redder hues is much more Anyway. Enter the Gungeon is also neat. Please do continue on, dear dscruffy1. E: Well there's a heck of a post for the top of a new page. Teledahn fucked around with this message at 10:28 on Jan 26, 2017 |

Teledahn posted:an emotionally stunted, overly muscled, generally hairy being. Objection! Male humans are not required by genetics to keep their emotions to themselves, nor do genetics impair their ability to emote in any significant way. Musculature is, likewise, not mandated by genetics. As for body hair, there are men with relatively little body hair (I should know, I'm one of them).

Whether emotional facility and empathy is a societal or biological factor is perhaps best left for another thread. I should note; I would hardly wish for my post to be taken as undeniable inviolate irrefutable truth, merely amusingly wrong just enough to be informative. Also amusing. We like that here. The Supply Drop hits later today! Waiting for it to happen so I can claim my Challenge Mode win achievement. (I suspect it should be able to pick it up as I have the reward item unlocked.) Also, on a hilarious run note, ended up with Helix Bullets, Scattershot, TT Sight, Bundle Of Wands, Ancient Hero's Bandana, and Angry Bullets. On one run. And the Jammer and Cog of Battle for bosses. (As an interesting note, with accuracy up items, more of the Jammer's notes spray forward...) ALL BECOMES CHICKEN.

Teledahn posted:You're trying to use low hormone levels and superior vision as an insult? On top of the lower instance of colorblindness that a second X chromosome brings, there are some XX women and XXY men who have a fourth color sensitive cell that detects a wavelength of light between red and green, and can somehow strengthen night vision (color sensitive cells aren't particularly good at detecting low levels of light, which is why nocturnal animals are generally colorblind). Some estimates put it as high as 10% of men and 50% of women that have 4 color sensitive cells instead of the standard 3 colors that the majority of people perceive. Oddly enough, only about 3% of women with the extra color sensitive cells have been found to have a functioning 4th receptor, and no men have ever been documented to have a functional 4th color receptor. I don't know how this came up in the Gungeon thread, but I like genetics and physiology a lot

This is what I thought the post was referencing in the first place. I remember reading about this a few years ago. It's news to me though that some males have the extra type of cone though. Thought it was female only trait. And generally allowed the small percentage that do have it better able to distinguish more hues more easily since it never said what wavelengths it responded to. Also LP is good and cool. Nice to see someone actually skilled. Really impressed your able to do rooms while talking coherently.

For men, I don't think there's ever been a recorded instance of the 4th cone cell actually doing anything, but they can have them present in their eyes. Even for the majority of women, there's very few recorded cases of the person being able to perceive the 4th color, despite so many women possessing the extra photoreceptor The last time I really researched this topic, the going theory was that the ability to see a color in between red and green was utilized so little during childhood development that the neural connections were almost always pruned by the time that a person with the 4th receptor cell reached adulthood. There was also some debate over whether or not the brain could even interpret the additional information that an extra cone cell sends, so it's possible that a second mutation is necessary to be able to both detect and process this wavelength, which is why it's so rare This talk reminds me of the Mantis Shrimp hype a few years ago; how they had like a dozen unique photoreceptors and people assumed that what they saw was an unimaginable kaleidoscope of beauty. It turns out that have really lovely color vision, and save for the ability to see ultraviolet light, they're somewhere between dogs and humans in what they can actually see. The huge volume of unique color sensitive cells was due to the fact that each cell could only detect a very narrow wavelength. If they didn't have a ridiculous amount of them, they wouldn't really have color vision at all. I want to discuss Gungeon more, but I got super butthurt about it a week or two ago and haven't touched it since. I'm still stuck on floor 3 and I don't have time to mash my face against this game now that school started. I wish I did though, this last LP run felt more like one of my misadventures and that made it extra cool to see

Wow, jeez. All this from my comment about finding secret walls without shooting them! ... And the comment immediately following. I suppose I should mention that the difference between normal and secret walls is actually decently easy to see when you put one beside the other. I'll see if I can't do a screen grab next time I find a secret wall.

Looks like Gungeon is currently half off on Steam in celebration of the new update. I'm glad to see a good LP of this, cause parts of the game (all the puns and the silly guns) really appeal to me, but the rest of the game is too unappealing for me to play.

First session, I do alright as the pilot, only to get bad luck with guns (got the alien one) and because I'm new, died on the Gatling Gull. Second time around played as the marine, found his gun to be much better. Get homing bullets and the hegemony rifle. Also get the gull. Take it out alright. Decide that's enough for this moment and save and quit. So far with hands on impression, it's not really any harder or more unfair than Isaac unlike what many have said. I dig it, and I'm sure I'll waste a lot more time on it.

Olpainless posted:I think it's more likely to be a flat panel design in the Hollow? Well, consider large rooms. That wall has a lot of real estate for potential secrets, so being sharp-eyed will help you find ones outside of treasure rooms. Not to mention secrets in the shop. The shopkeeper gets right pissed if you starts shooting walls in the shop.

In reality though, secret rooms will rarely make or break a run and new people should be saving their blanks for boss fights first. I think at most with secret rooms you might get a chest, and at worst you might break even on a blank or just a single heart.

I managed to get past the first floor on my first run, which honestly surprised me. Wound up with the Void Shotgun and the Lil' Bomber, which was interesting but unwieldy. Then I had to turn the game off because I'm a working adult and can't stay up until 12 o'clock in the morning playing videogames like I could when I was twenty. (The game was being pretty generous with ammo drops. Don't know if that's the Supply Drop update in effect, or if I was just lucky...)
