In the PS2 version, they would sometimes show up on the hill with all the metal king slimes.

That's not the same one, actually.

Also for the old bonus boss is it better to get the dragovian equipment or unlock the new dungeon first?

What? It seemed like
a good idea at the time.

Aaaaa! That was hella touch-and-go for a while but I beat Dhoulmagus with everyone standing on the first try. Angelo had Cheiron's Bow and both he and Jessica had Caduceus. I got very lucky, he only used the gently caress Your Buffs/Tension move once or twice in the first half, so we were basically full everything going into the second.

This Rank X battle is infuriating. Octurion never heals when he should, and it's bullshit when the 3rd battle has monsters that can bring its companions back from the dead.

Do you have to have staffs in order to use Caduceus?

If not then I've been making a terrible mistake with Jessica the entire game so far :v:

enemy one body to the proximity Zan attack discard the power slap hit.
You don't really need caduceus to beat dhoulmagus, you just have to play insanely conservatively and prepare your gear moderately well. I did it with everyone around 25-27 with a healbow. Not having an aoe source of healing period sounds like a hell of a thing though

So when do you get a all party heal anyway? From the looks of it, Dhoulmagus is coming up soon as I just got the ship. Also when can I get revival items so if I lose Angelo, I can get him back and healing again.

As a skill? Angelo gets Multiheal at level 30. Or Hero gets Omniheal at 82 Courage, or Jessica gets Hustle Dance at 100 Sex Appeal.

As for Revival, you can potentially get them right now, but they're extremely limited. By the time you fight Dhoulmagus, they're buyable, but you're only allowed to have one at a time as far as the merchant's concerned.

Though your hero learns Zing at 29.

Sometime before the fight with Dhoulmagus there a magic pool of water or something that fully heals you party. Just play normally until you get there and then grind levels until Angelo learns multi-heal.

It shouldn't take too long.

Cool. It pretty easy right now to keep in dungeons with Angelo's MP archery skill, as I just use his magic to heal, get MP back and repeat. It was getting really hilarious just full healing the entire party and gaining my MP back in the Mole dungeon on the constantly appearing mudhands.

Stealing is ludicrously rare, even in its upgraded form.

That being said, Stainless Steel Sickle is a free damage boost that has a chance to steal so no, I definitely wouldn't say scythes are a bad choice. Scythes also have Yangus's most powerful attack as the final skill, super expensive granted, but still worth noting.

Is there a good guide to the monster arena and monster locations in general?

I'm admittedly lazy as all hell and I don't feel like tracking down some random enemy only to find out it has bunk stats. I finished the first 3 ranks easy and from what I understand I can now upgrade my team now that I have the boat.

I just used this one from Gamefaqs. https://www.gamefaqs.com/ps2/583527-dragon-quest-viii-journey-of-the-cursed-king/faqs/40172 Speaking of the monster arena. Does anyone know when Rank S opens up? I finished Rank A before fighting Dhoulmagus so I could recruit Morrie. Is it locked until afterwards?

The fact that you helped him will tie into the main plot eventually though, which is nice.

I got the godbird yesterday and immediatly went to slime hill and now all my dudes are level 50 with two trees maxed out and change. I think I'm ready for both the endgame and 2/3rds of the postgame, haha.

It's locked until you clear the plot of the town that unlocks after that fight.

Define "better". You can do the bingo game in the casino passively and then sell magic waters, turning every casino coin into 1.5 gold. Or you can kill 30 terror tabbies and then repeatedly spawn and kill the golden tabby outside of the chapel in trodain for 700 gold and a decent chance at gold ring drops.

Also, gold golems only give 300 vs. 700 gold but it's still the same grind as it was in the PS2 version since you can guarantee encounters rather than RNG.

Rather than magic waters, wait till you get 1k coins then buy agility rings. Those plus a 45 good bandana will make the Mercury bandana that will sell for 2k apiece.

You can steamroll the rest of the main game. Hell, on PS2 I always beat the game in the early 30s.

You'll still get one-shot by the bonus boss if they decide they want to crit you (which is 80% of the time) :(

Setting aside the fact that I'm 25 hours in and haven't recruited her yet, anything worth stealing is worth getting more than one chance to steal. Her steal only activates when the battle is over, and only on the last enemy killed. Her steal is a nice bonus (that you get way too late), not something to rely on. Unless I"m misunderstanding how stealing works?

The main reason not to use Steal Sickle is that you're generally better off just murdering them and fighting another than wasting time trying to actively steal from them. Particularly now with visible encounters so you can now deliberately fight the same enemy. Red's passive stealing just boosts that; Stealing is effectively just trying to increase drop rate. Red's passive is just doing it straight and directly increasing drop rate. The only thing that makes it at all different from simply having it boost the drop rate itself is the possibility of getting 2 of them.

Ram the caps for Staves and Sex Appeal, they're way too good to miss out on. Whips pretty much suck now and those two trees give you some amazing skills.

Yeah kinda regret going with whips with Jessie, as outside of hitting a lot of enemies, it doesn't do a whole lot in term of abilities. She probably the first to get drop when Red or Morrie get unlocked.

Red gets it as her first Roguery skill. Morrie doesn't.

Though Red is maybe the best damage dealer in the game, so jury's out on if you want her doing that rather than Jessica.
