Cora apparently served for four years with an Asari commando unit, so unless she spent half a decade simmering with quiet racism (and we already had Ashley for that), she's probably at least a little less Cerberus-y than TIM.

Or they could do what they did with James and just change her name when people start making up connections.

Hey, you know what might be neat? If it turns out some of the races or civilizations you encounter in Andromeda are originally from the Milky Way, and were part of their own races' "Andromeda Initiative" back in some previous Reaper cycle. Like maybe the bad guy species were actually refugees escaping the Reapers ~100,000 years ago and the reason they're so set against the Council races is because they're scared if other races start crossing over the Reapers might follow them.

I mean if the cycle's happened countless times before and the Council races were able to tech up to galaxy-crossing in time, that probably means others would have as well.

Edit: Also possible that other races tried and left a bad impression on the natives (maybe a Prothean expedition? they were assholes) which is why they're so hostile now, or something like that.

Reapers are like 2000 years late due to the Prothean's breaking the Citadel last cycle. The current cycle is probably the most technologically advanced cycle since the original Leviathans.

I keep forgetting that the Rachni War was the Reapers' fault. If the Protheans hadn't sabotaged the Citadel, the Asari/Turian/Salarian cycle would've been wiped out and humanity probably would've been discovering their local mass relay not that long after the Reapers finished their genocide. Imagine a cycle where humans are one of the first species to discover the mass relays... and then the yahg show up :gonk:

It'd actually be kind of funny if pursuing a relationship with an alien gets you chided since presumably part of the expectation of being part of a colonization mission founding a new branch of humanity would be having kids. Eh, they've probably got all the tech with them for surrogate births or growing kids in a lab or whatever.

Actually there's another thing it'd be neat to explore about cross-galaxy colonization, the original colonists have the power to completely mould social customs and culture. There should be an option to agitate for Glorious Socialism as the foundational belief system of Andromedan Humanity.

I think it is weirder that they had the resources to send 4 ships away when:

1 - either they were ignoring the reaper threat and had no reason to send the ships

or

2 - they knew about the reapers and felt they could spare that many resources

Verdict: game will have lovely writing again.

So far the upshot is that the Andromeda Initiative was started by "someone" (Cerberus) 10 years before ME1 or something and so it's just for kicks. You know, let's send our people on a 600 year long trip 2.5 million light years away for fun. With no way to even know if it worked.

If they didn't believe in the Reaper threat and thought the galaxy was mostly at peace, wouldn't that be the right time to try an ambitious cross-galaxy exploration/colonization mission? Not as an escape but more like exploring a distant frontier?

And if they did believe in the Reapers, they might've thought they were doomed to lose and the arks would be a way to allow humanity to live on? It wouldn't be too surprising if you discover partway through that Dad Ryder and other top-level people knew about the Reaper stuff somehow and that was the secret motivation to build the arks under the guise of exploration.

Not saying there won't be bad writing just that there being an exploration mission for a neighbouring galaxy at all isn't part of it.

Yeah to be honest the setting already doesn't make any fuckin' sense but as long as we get some decent characters and good shooty bits the rest can be as disjointed as the loyalty missions in ME2 and I'll be pretty happy.

They could actually make a sort of decent premise.

The asari (cuz they were around longest) have been planning on an intergalactic journey and have almost perfected the technology. During the reaping they finish it and decide to offer an olive branch to the other citadel races and launch in secret. Hand wave away the logistics and there ya go. It was already in development.

Make it so everything was ready except communications and they just launch without it in the face of certain annihilation.

Yeah. The entire ME franchise was already killed off by the "artistic genius" behind ME3 and market research showed a prequel wouldn't sell so Andromeda is the closest thing to a soft reboot.

Think of some dumb star trek episode. The premise doesn't make any sense but you just have to accept it and run with it, hoping that the character drama makes up for it.

The problem is that the milky way galaxy, in the games, is barely explored. There are a bunch of mass relays they don't even use for fear of what might be on the other end. And that's a tiny percentage of the ares that actually have a relay.

There is no reason to leave the galaxy whatsoever.

If you make that the premise then you stop being explorers and become refugees which completely changes the tone of the story.

Columbus crossed the Atlantic and NASA landed on the moon without annihilation driving them forward I'm not sure why similar motives can't apply to travelling to a new galaxy.

With Mars there's a trove of reasons to set that up beyond "it's neat!". There's the chance of continued colonization upon review of the issues faced by initial colonists, it's important for designing rockets and vessels that can carry humans further, and it's a milestone of human exploration. But all that has to communicated back. The Andromeda Initiative can't even relay success or failure on a meaningful time scale. It's just sending out a ship and hoping it makes it without any further contact.

I mean, yeah, maybe you'd find a crazy rich guy to spend untold running-a-government amounts of money and motivation, but I don't think someone like Musk would set a trip like that up unless he could prove it totally worked and get the adoration and closure that it would bring.

Nah, turns out the Hyperion is out of contact with the main hub thing so I doubt they have QM entanglers. Or maybe the kett have even better space magic that can block them, I dunno. Regardless, the Milky Way would need to wait 600 years for success to be confirmed which is a pretty long lead time. Maybe the Asari would be down for that but not humanity.
