Streamline Studios in Malaysia got back to me wanting to know if I still wanted to go for the position I applied to months & months back! They want to "progress my application to the next stage!" I don't know what that means, but it's so nice just to hear back from someone. Hopefully I'll have an interview out of it at least and it'll be a good learning experience.

If any are wondering, the meeting went ... Okay. I'm just finishing the month at the Facepalm Factory because I need a full paycheque. A bunch of bills just hit and I was reminded that no matter how angry I am, I still have to live. You bet I'm looking for work in the office when I don't directly need to appear busy. Now that I've completely mentally checked out, it's all hilarious to me rather than distressing, except the commute thing, but one way or another that'll be over soon.

Despite all the crappy things they do to you and others, you might think twice about being dishonest to them about how you spend your time there. You still have your own reputation to consider. "This person remained honest and disciplined in an adverse situation" is a much better peer reference than "they checked out and started surfing the net on company time, I dun blame em doe!"

You're escaping the illegal shady london company and expatriating to Malaysia to work in the pixel mines of an outsourcing studio?

post your portfolio please - if these are the only options you're finding available you need some assistance in how you present yourself.

Okay, I'm only a Junior, so, yeah:
https://www.labmonkey.co - SA parses urls with https in front of them for some reason, just go without https.

I am in the process of changing everything, and making a new environment/character setpiece to feature on it, but it's been tough to find time to actually put hours into it as you can imagine with my situation.
My skills are mostly with creatures, I want to get some people up there too and that's part of the setpiece. I've done people before, but there's a reason why they're not exactly in my Best Hits.

These aren't up there but I'm fairly versatile when it comes to style. Here are a couple things just for fun:

Turnarounds exploring bears and bear like critters.

Some costume designs.

A model in progress, still early but I think he looks neat.

Anyways yeah I've had 2 art tests in all the jobs I have applied for, and neither got back to me. Only ones that did were you know who, and now Streamline. What is awful about them, if I may ask?

Streamline's site has a Volition testimonial that dates back to Saints Row 1. They weren't used for SR2 or afterwards, afaik. Read into that what you will.

I'm mostly concerned about the notion of expatriating as a junior to a sweatshop outsourcer. The reason they're in Malaysia and selling a product globally is because they'll pay pennies. You're a junior so you're not going to be directing things or being a liason between the UK and their Malaysian art team.

Looking at your portfolio you have some skill but you're presenting yourself like poo poo. Your chimp is hands down the most interesting thing in your portfolio and I can't click the pictures to make them bigger. Your portfolio is all over the place in style, content and medium. I don't know what the gently caress you are and it looks like you don't either.

I want you to look at this guy's portfolio:
http://www.peperaart.com/

What do you see?

ART
ART I CAN MAKE BIGGER
CONSISTENTLY GOOD ART
ART THAT DEMONSTRATES AN AREA OF FOCUS / CORE COMPETENCY

Just looking at that site I know this guy doesn't gently caress around and does sci-fi hard surface stuff. I totally want him for my sci-fi hard surface needs.

I also know I totally don't want him to do character concept art. He might be good at it, but it's not what he does.

If I'm looking for AAAAA spacetanks, I'm gonna give this fucker a call because he's a AAAA spacetanks guy.

That's what your portfolio should be showing.

Take a look at this guy's portfolio:

http://mutatedjellyfish.net/

This shows off his 3d art! It's broader in scope, but it shows that he does environment and character work in cartoony, stylized games. He's totally a cartoony games artist and a bit more of a generalist. He's not the guy to hire to work at Naughty Dog on The Last of Photorealistic Murderers. If I'm hiring a 3d artist for a smaller company that doesn't want to / can't afford to make photoreal stuff and needs stylish art, I'm gonna give this guy a call, because that's what he does.

Now check out this poo poo:

http://design.mutatedjellyfish.net/

A TOTALLY DIFFERENT PORTFOLIO, TAILORED TO A TOTALLY DIFFERENT FOCUS!

This guy doesn't gently caress around, he does all sorts of designy poo poo. This is great to see when I'm looking for a graphic designer to do cool stylized graphic designs for my whatever-the-gently caress not a 3d games business.

Notice how Worth doesn't put his designy poo poo on his 3d job portfolio, and vice versa? He's tailoring his portfolio to the jobs he's applying for.

I want you to figure out what your core competency and career goals are. You need to pay rent so maybe focus more on that core competency. Then I want you to figure out what pieces you need in a portfolio to demonstrate that core competency (hint if you're aiming for character art, show me some anatomy, cloth, skin, eyes, and hair, because that's all characters are made of, pretty much), and then I want you to fill out that portfolio with what you have or ID the missing pieces you need to create.

This isn't something you're going to be able to figure out and fix in the next 4 weeks before your rent's due, so you'll need to figure out what your real-life next steps are. But your career-wise steps need to be built around figuring out who the gently caress you are and how the gently caress to market that person.

Oh, and the reason I'm telling you this is not because you suck at art. You definitely show potential, but you haven't realized that potential yet. You're spreading yourself really thin and you just don't have enough volume of work in a particular discipline to demonstrate your real capabilities. That's what you need to fix. It could be that making a poo poo-ton of characters at streamline for 2 years gives you the structure to put in those hours and improve, but given what the sort of contracts they're going to get are like, I wouldn't count on it. Finally, if you can listen to a bunch of people tell you you're wrong about something, but in your heart you feel its right, do it anyways. Likewise if something feels wrong in your heart, but people are encouraging it, don't do it. In the case of shadyCo, you felt it was wrong and came here for confirmation (and got it in spades).

Also, even ignoring that I can't expand the chimp (seriously what), it's way down the page. Underneath and past some really, really not-great-by-comparison art. And the whole thing is terribly organized so I had to do a LOT of scrolling to get there. Please fix your portfolio to not be poop.

Also, once you figure out what direction you want to take, we can tell you what the benchmark programs and concepts are that companies are looking for right now so you can straight up put that exact poo poo in there. For example, portfolios need Substance proficiency and character art portfolios need Marvelous Designer experience etc.

uglynoodles

Okay, this weekend I'll put together a note file of exercises to do in order to fix this.
Also -- SA puts HTTPS on the front of any URL for some reason, that's not a problem I run into linking from anywhere else.
I essentially want to be a creature character specialist. I want to be the person that you hire because you need an animal that doesn't look like poo poo and makes sense, whether realistic or stylised. Cartoon stuff is easier for me to do as I started life as a cartoonist, but I do enjoy pushing detail for realism when I can.

Thank you for the advice. Website design is not my greatest skill by a long shot, and being a Jr all I know is what my uni taught me regarding my portfolio, which got good marks.

Problem with the chimp images not being bigger is that a lot of the shots don't exist in higher res, the paintover was a volume test I did off a BPR screenshot.

I'll come up with something and post it here for review. Thank you all for being so kind and taking your time to push me in the right direction.

Grab a half decent WordPress theme for ease of updating or alternatively organise your artstation stuff into categories and link to the website version they give you.
Username.artstation.com instead of artstation.com/username, here's mine as an example. https://keket.artstation.com/ As they let you organize the pages and do more tweaks to presentation.

For clarity, it wasn't in our office. We have an office building that has a few other studios in it, but the ground floor is dominated by a very large company. The dirty protest was on the ground floor bathroom which has, apparently, been a bit of a warzone in the past with one potentially apocryphal story of someone shame-eating half a domino's pizza in a cubical before attempting to force the remains of it (complete with box) down a lavvy.

Not a regular thing. It was also a shared office building, which suffered from a minimal number of stalls -- typically 5-7 working stalls in a building of several hundred employees and probably half again as many construction workers and other temp contractors on a daily basis. Not everyone got along with other building tenants, and I suspect some shenanigans ensued. But yeah this happened a few times. Whole Foods was the anchor tenant and banned everyone else from using the bathroom on their floor, they even had employees stationed on bathroom-narc status watching for dumb proles that ignored the "stay the gently caress out" signs and tried to sneak into the private stalls when everything else had a line. That plus the constant construction/renovations made it so inconvenient to take a poo poo that the smart play became walking across the street/down the block (have fun doing that in the middle of a blizzard in Cambridge) and sneaking into another office to use theirs.

We couldn't get out of that building loving fast enough.

Despite Carmack being... every bit the analytically-focused socially-blind nerd back-end programmers (like myself in the past) tend to be... I still have his back on this one. The ruling they laid down is giving legal precedence to the idea that programmer brains are NDAed, now. We just can't change jobs. Because apparently when we've done a thing before, and then do a thing like that, or even just TALK about a thing we did in the past to another programmer, we're "non-literally copying" the algorithms. We try and explain how ridiculous this is, and the lawyers point at software patents, which are themselves spun from whole cloth of bullshit.

Every bit of that case, and software patent law in general, has me livid. They're locking programmers down in a way that stifles our ability to be anything but obedient code drones for whoever scoops us out of university first.

EDIT: If this weren't the year that birthed "alternative facts", "non-literally copied" would be the Bullshit New Imaginary Concept Of 2017.

I think Carmack and Shalinor have a point. If you learn or create a recipe for a complicated cake, you can't be expected to unlearn it when you change jobs. If your new employer says "hey that cake you made before was really good, can you make one for us, too" then even without looking at the recipe, you should be able to recreate something pretty close. You'll probably have to recreate the wheel in some places, but the end result would be very similar.

Vino
Aug 11, 2010
In some sense, the industry is rife with non-literal copying. Sometimes I feel like I'm writing the same code over and over for every project I do. Old engine had a feature and new engine doesn't have it, then you have to write it and you are non-literally copying. Every programmer does it and it's considered normal, only thing different about Carmack's situation is the thing he's doing is somewhat novel and in a new industry sector that's still somewhat of an mysterious quantity for anyone with pointy hair.
