How big exactly is 7? Because I always hear these horror stories about how it takes two hours to get to the first combat tutorial, and how even speed running it will take you 70 hours or so. Why was it so ambitiously big and what was people's reactions to it at the time

It's loving huge. My 3DS playthrough took just about 100 hours, not including bonus dungeons.

it's split into multiple little episodes, effectively and doesn't really switch focus to the over arching plot until like the last third of the game, i guess?

As a huge DQ fan, I loved having a lot of DQ since it was the first time we got a DQ game in over 9 years. I remembered seeing pictures of DQ 5 and 6 in Nintendo Power in the mid 90s and wanting them more than anything else. But we didn't get them.

The game took me 120 hours. I think the first 20 hours is perfect, and I felt like I couldn't get enough for the first time I played it. The first 20 hours had a lot of fun different stories. Most of what I remember is from those 20 hours. After that, there were parts where it dragged for a long time. It would definitely have been a better game if it was cut in half. I still think it's worth playing just for those first 20 hours. After that, you can stop if you feel like stopping.

What were other people's reactions? No one played it. It was a PS1 game that looked like a SNES game competing with Grand Theft Auto 3, Metal Gear Solid 2, Devil May Cry, and Final Fantasy X that holiday season.

I finished at about 80 hours and then did another 20 in the postgame. The game is so long you don't unlock the core mechanic (classes) until about 15 hours in and don't have a full party of four permanent characters until around 50 hours.

There are so many individual vignettes that you lose track of which is which. There is also a lot of padding - you do every location at least twice; there are a couple of dungeons you need to traverse four times, maybe more.

The traveler's tablet system added to the 3DS pads the game even more by giving you mini-dungeons to run through that generally grant pretty nice rewards upon the first completion.

DQVII is mind-bogglingly huge because it was the first time the Dragon Quest folks made a game on the Playstation, and they were delighted and overwhelmed by the sheer amount of data that can be jammed into a CD. I don't know no have a link handy anymore, but a more recent interview has someone from the team flat-out stating that they "made too much game". Also it's a bunch of loosely linked vignettes, so it's easy to have groups of people all working on their own little stories and then jamming the whole mess into a single narrative cluster gently caress.

Anyway, the game does reach the 70-90 hour range pretty easily, and the remake has a bunch of quality of life adjustments and onscreen encounters and general tightening. (I beat it at around 85 hours) and then there's the post-game to consider.

The script is over 260,000 words.

I dont remember the fan reaction very well because I was twelve or something, but my older brother owned it. Mostly we were surprised that it was the first Dragon Warrior game (in North America) since like 1992, and I think we assumed the franchise died. Also while I like to think I'm beyond petty concerns like graphics, DQVII is, uh, not a good looking Playstation game. Especially not in comparison to all the PS1 RPGs that already came out and look better.

My urges are becoming...

UNCONTROLLABLE

Game took me 116 hours and I spent the last third of it begging for it to end. DQ8 meanwhile took me 65 and now I'm happily hacking away at the postgame and have most of it(not counting the insane boss refight dungeon which I'm not doing) squared away. All I have left is the final dragovian trial and rank x of the monster arena before i put the game down for other stuff and that has me at about 73 hours.

What the best staff I can get for Jessie before I fight Dhoulmagus? Hero is at level 31 while the others are at level 29 - 30, with Angelo just getting his team heal spell just in time. So glad it easy to farm metal slime near the lizard hunting ground with the camera trick, as I went from level 20 to 30 in about a half hour.

If you recruit Morrie and invest into his Claw tree down to "Rake 'N' Break" you can do the same thing to your foes. It only hits one enemy at a time though.

Eh, it's useful until you get to the point where bosses regularly start using the cold air attack, and it's useful again once you can make a timbrel. So it's only like the middle third where it's useless.

Jeez if your at that level and beat him easily, then I probably won't have a problem with him at level 31.

Since I know a plot event happens after Dhoulmagus, should I try to get the Monster Arena pass Rank B before I fight him? Want to try to get high so I can get Morrie.

Rank B is for all intents and purposes impossible before Dhoulmagus, and conveniently gets a LOT easier with a monster you can get right after Dhoulmagus.

Also said plot event doesn't prohibit you from going to the arena and you can't even challenge Rank S to get Morrie until you beat Evil Jessica anyway.

By Orkutsk, a team of Talos, Skeledoid or Steropes for your attackers and either Curer or Octurion for your healer can (with luck) beat Rank S. I'm more comfortable with the Curer version since he's a much more reliable healer, but Octurion does help you kill the Liquid Metal Slime easier.

Skeledoid/Octurion/Steropes can only be found once you beat rank B though. For D-B, try Talos, Potbelly and Curer. Caper unfortunately has too little HP to fight in Rank B, but might work if you're high level enough. Goldman/Brickman works as well, but do bring Talos.

Locations:
Skeledoid: Dark Ruins island, Southwest part.
Steropes: Princess Minnie Castle Island, west part.
Curer: Location between Arcadia and Rydon's tower. He either spawns near Arcadia or the Tower.
Octurion: Beach south of Argonia. Use the boat to get there.
Goldman: Around Neos, Day.
Brickman: Peregrin Quay, southeast.

Kiryl gets Multiheal and Kazing while Meena doesn't, so regardless of any other spell differences that's probably the dealbreaker.

Maya vs Borya is more of a damage vs utility issue. Maya gets like eight different ways to set people on fire and can turn into a dragon. Borya has Acceleratle and Oomph and a bunch of debuffs.

Waiting til you get them isn't a problem. I think the time limit's after the fight with the dog, and you can get Red and Morrie way before then.

Not that it matters much. All you lose out for not doing the quest is the free tokens, I think.

I beat Rank B before Dhoulmagus, it's not impossible, it's just sort of pointless. Rank A & B give some pretty decent weapons for Yangus and Guv but I'd say it's not really worth the trouble.
