Which, shockingly doesn't seem too bad. I mean, it seems to hold a similar design space to the A-wing, but is a bit weaker? I dunno, I can;t find anything wrong with this.

I don't get why tournaments don't just create or use the mission scenarios for gameplay. Have all matches randomly chose a scenario and see who can actually juggle the ability to fly and manage objectives.

Yeah I'm not a fan of straight up 100v100 who wants to fight.

I'd guess that FFG doesn't balance the scenarios. Is that how IA works? I see people playing it competitively all the time, but I don't understand how that even works.

Yeah, IA has objectives. You can totally just Kill All Their Mans and win, but you can also win by claiming objectives. You don't have to have the most destructive squad; you can be fast and sneaky instead. It adds a lot to the metagame.

That said, the objectives in the X-Wing missions aren't competitive-level balanced, but I'd love to see a mission-based alternate format. Someday.

So after 2 years of casual play I've finally found a small store tournament I can go to. Now I need to get better at this game.

Thinking of a brace of defenders, probably Countess Ryad with x7 title, Push the Limit and Twin Ion Engine Mk 2 as one and and X7/Mark 2 defender but not sure what to take for the rest of the points. Omega Leader is always a solid choice but seems a bit fragile. Might take

“Omega Leader” + Comm Relay + Juke + Stealth Device (29)
Countess Ryad + Push the Limit + TIE/x7 + Twin Ion Engine Mk. II (36)
Colonel Vessery + Crack Shot + TIE/x7 + Twin Ion Engine Mk. II (35)

Alternatively I may take the Upsilon, it looks nasty and potentially not a lot of the opposition will be used to it.

My initial thought was
Countess Ryad + Push the Limit + TIE/x7 (35)
Delta Squadron Pilot + TIE/x7 (28)
Starkiller Base Pilot + General Hux + Kylo Ren's Shuttle (37)

But on reflection I'm not sure I can keep the Defenders close enough to benefit from Hux, perhaps this might be better

Countess Ryad + Push the Limit + TIE/x7 (35)
Delta Squadron Pilot + TIE/x7 (28)
Major Stridan + Operations Specialist + Kylo Ren's Shuttle (37)

I like this better, I think. I prefer Twin Ion Engine Mk 2 on my Defenders, I could drop the Upsilon title and free the points but a little stress management out to range 3 might be helpful against Midlink lists.

Any comments and advice welcome.

Ryad, Vessery and O Leader are a kick in the pants. O Leader's ability synergizes really well with Vessery, because O Leader wants to grab a target lock and keep it forever. Thing is, a fully loaded O Leader is 29 points, which is a Palpshuttle. I think chances are you're going to get better value from Palpatine.
Vessery doesn't really need TIE Mk. II unless he's getting stress externally, but that's a meta call for you to see whether you think the 1 point bid for Vess/Ryad initiative bid is worth it.

He went back to 40k :smith: If this one goes well I'll try and make it up to Raleigh more often. There's a flooded quarry near there where I help teach scuba classes starting in April, so I'll be up there a little more often no matter what.

fyi Expose is really bad.

With 4 red dice, you're better off spending the action for focus, as you will have a much better expected damage with 4 focused red dice than 5 naked red dice.

Raw numbers:

Even with Gunner, against 2 agility w/focus,
4 attack w/focus has expected damage of 1.99
5 attack w/o focus has expected damage of 1.71

The upsilon wingspan is crazy. I'm definitely going to be flying it with the wings down as much as possible.

e: This is my janky upsilon list.

TIE Advanced: · Darth Vader (29)
Veteran Instincts (1)
Engine Upgrade (4)
TIE/x1 (0)
Advanced Targeting Computer (1)

Upsilon-class Shuttle: · Kylo Ren (34)
Push The Limit (3)
Fire Control System (2)
Engine Upgrade (4)
· General Hux (5)
Inspiring Recruit (1)
· Kylo Ren's Shuttle (2)
Pattern Analyzer (2)

TIE Fighter: Academy Pilot (12)
-- TOTAL ------- 100p. --

If their ace shoots kylo then my Vader will hunt them down at PS11 and throw blinded pilot crits at them or ps0 etc. If they shoot Vader I can use Hux + PTL + Coordinate to give him effectively 4 actions a turn. The academy is a blocker and I'll throw Hux's condition on him to make him a damage threat too.

The upsilon can do some pretty crazy stuff. 1 hard, use the pattern analyser to boost + another action and then be able to clear the double stress next turn. If you do a green maneuver you can use hux and PTL without receiving stress. You can 0 stop and use hux or take two actions with PTL and clear both with a green next turn. It is a 53 point shuttle though!

I also like the ability to use the shuttles coordinate action on Vader for barrel rolls to avoid blocks.

Seems situational unless Kylo becomes the new Palp, which I don't think will happen. Hard to give up an EPT slot just for Kylo mitigation, imo.

The problem with giving Vader more actions is that it doesn't actually make him any more durable. He'll get focus+evade without any help from another ship, and he'll never get to equip Autothrusters or another defensive upgrade.

At the end of the day he's still only got five EHP and three greens, which will not stand up to concentrated attacks.

He's a pseudo-defender, though, especially if he can get another action via coordinate. Three greens + focus + evade + crazy arc dodging ability. He's got one less HP but is much better at avoiding fire.

Not really. Testing with the new cards shows it's not really as scary as people think. It's specific for that ship and has to roll crits reliably, which means either RAC or Vader. Vader pilot just melts and Vader crew means getting rid of HotCop or Gunner. Boosting was usually needed as the action for a lot of situations, and RAC can't afford PTL with so many Ventress running around.
