I am no plumber but does that mean one rooms drain could have lead to another rooms tap, or something similar? My sister is lactose intolerant and got sick of something labelled "suitable for a lactose free lifestyle" which turned out to be decidedly non lactose free because despite appearances it was a propriety label that meant <1% lactose by weight, so basically everything but milk powder. Lactose intolerance isn't an allergy. If I had to guess I'm assuming she had a product that was reduced in lactose but not lactose free. That phrase isn't kicking anything back on Google, and lactose makes up 2-8% of milk by weight. You can't say something is gluten free unless it's been tested to be gluten free. "This new federal definition standardizes the meaning of “gluten-free” claims across the food industry. It requires that, in order to use the term "gluten-free" on its label, a food must meet all of the requirements of the definition, including that the food must contain less than 20 parts per million of gluten. The rule also requires foods with the claims “no gluten,” “free of gluten,” and “without gluten” to meet the definition for “gluten-free.”" Ultimately you just do the best you can and roll the dice, weird poo poo happens to food. My idiot coworker threw french fries onto my lunch plate today even though I'm mildly allergic to potatoes. You just kinda wish for the best, keep your meds around, and live your life. There was some talk about asbestos recently right? It has to be diet coke for it to work. Although that sounds like an OSHA reg: Just no Coke at all near Mentos, even though only diet is the one that's dangerous.

I'm fairly certain it's the carbonation. People use diet because it doesn't contain sticky sugar and is easier to clean up.

Collateral Damage posted:Is it the aspartame that causes the reaction? From Wikipedia: quote:The eruption is caused by a physical reaction, rather than any chemical reaction. The addition of the Mentos leads to the rapid nucleation of carbon dioxide gas bubbles precipitating out of solution.[16] Gasses, in general, are more soluble in liquids at elevated pressures. Carbonated sodas contain elevated levels of carbon dioxide under pressure. The solution becomes supersaturated with carbon dioxide when the bottle is opened, and the pressure is released. Under these conditions, carbon dioxide begins to precipitate from solution, forming gas bubbles. Normally, this process is relatively slow, because the activation energy for this process is high. The activation energy for a process like bubble nucleation depends on where the bubble forms. It is highest for bubbles that form in the liquid itself (homogeneous nucleation), and lower if the bubble forms on some other surface (heterogeneous nucleation). When the pressure is released from a soda bottle, the bubbles tend to form on the sides of the bottle. But because they are smooth and clean, the activation energy is still relatively high, and the process is slow. The addition of other nucleation sites provides an alternate pathway for the reaction to occur with lower activation energy, much like a catalyst. For instance dropping grains of salt or sand into the solution lowers the activation energy, and increases the rate of carbon dioxide precipitation. The physical characteristics of Mentos (surface roughness, easy dissolution into the liquid, etc.) have the effect of drastically reducing the activation energy for carbon dioxide bubble formation, so that the nucleation rate becomes exceedingly high. This formation of gaseous carbon dioxide within the water, which due to hydrogen bonding and its high surface tension wants to maintain a connected matrix of molecules, causes the water to foam, ultimately generating the "jet"—or "geyser"—or eruption-like nature of the effusion.[11][3][14][17] The foaming is aided by the presence of chemicals like potassium benzoate and aspartame in Diet Coke, and gelatin and gum arabic in the Mentos candy, all which influence the nature of water's surface tension and degree to which it can foam.[9][11][14]

You can even do it with sand. We did it as kids at the beach. Heaps of fun and no clean up because it's the loving beach. But, if you want it to really explode - use activated charcoal. Each individual grain is about the size of a grain of sand, but has more surface area than a tennis court. One gram of activated carbon has a surface area in excess of 3,000 m2 (32,000 sq ft). Drop it in a glass or anything carbonated and poo poo will fly to the loving moon.
