2 Questions based on 3DS related things

1) Red is pure story right? I don't have to do anything and she joins automatically? I just finished the Snow Dog area/story and wondering if I should be doing something to get her by now as I have Morrie.

2) On the new Ending I want to get it just to see how it plays out but man if I go that path does that mean I doom Medea to be with Charmles? I feel kinda silly caring *this* much about it but man I don't think I could do that to Medea. She's had a hard enough time as is.

Do you suppose it would be spreading oneself too thin to put points in all of Hero's weapon skills? Boomerangs to Power Throw, Spears to Lightning Thrust, Swords to Falcon Slash and then Courage? Apparently there are more seeds of skill in this version though.

You can aparently max three and half skills post game grinding, not counting skill seeds which are infinite but a pain to farm. But only about two and a few points spare playing normally, and you won't have the good stuff for most of your game if you spread out early doing this.

That's pretty much what I did, though after lightning thrust I focused on courage and got swords later when I was grinding for the new post game dungeon.

New skill seeds are from the photography quest and some later-game (i.e. Arcadia onward) blue chests.

Also of note, best spear and best boomerang seem to be exclusive, as in you need one to make the other.

Any tips for beating the Swordsman's Labyrinth boss? It's the first time I've died in this game.

He just one hit killed Jessica and Angelo on his first two attacks. gently caress this boss.

The marriage between Charmles and Medea is still called off thought with "your son is a prick" as the sole justification (as opposed to "your son is a prick and also im in love with the bride"). Then Jessica shows up in Medeas dress and marries you instead of Medea

Why is this ending even a thing? The hero has had more chemistry with the horse than he did with Jessica.

Also where are the new dungeons?

I had the hero and Angelo on healing duty, Jessica using accelerate, and yangus using parallax after pschying to 50.

Wow Morrie just... just kinda puts a end to Captain Crow all by himself doesn't he?

Was that a boss? Was that even a fight? I felt like I was picking on someone.

Yeah I think he was suppose to be tough on the PS2 version going by the Gamefaqs entry, but Morrie turning off his psyche just makes him a total pushover.

Also finally got Red up to 100 in knives. She going to be a beast with that and her metal king sword.

Makes sense. If you negate his ability to build tension and nuke you with thin air he doesn't have much to fall back on.

Yeah so I've had a day or two since beating DQ8 to reflect on it. Like, I get intellectually that DQ8 is a great game and originated a lot of the things that I love about DQ and gives the franchise its identity (namely the localization's sense of humor and puns) and I have to say I was kind of underwhelmed with it as an actual play experience.
That being said, Yangus and Trode will be in my heart always. Also this was probably one of the most tightly paced DQs I've played, doing a really good job of moving me on to the next area before I got sick of looking at the current one and hitting the next story beat before I felt like nothing was happening. It also did a good job of giving me just enough information to figure out what I was supposed to do next without telling me outright. I almost always knew what I was supposed to do next, even if I didn't explicitly know where to do it, and thats kind of how I prefer it. Encourages exploration without letting you feel too lost.

The major exception to this was Tryan Gully. I still have no idea how I was supposed to have known to look for it, let alone where it was. Was the Dark Yggdrasil Leaf that gave you the purple marker on your map ever mentioned before? I have no recollection of it. First and only time I had to look for a walkthrough.

All in all I give it a B. Despite 3dsDQ7s major pacing problems (oh god that last act) and bullshit cutscene hunting (oh god greenthumb gardens), I still liked 7 better on the whole.

I think they made this version too easy and with visible enemies it changes skill strategy a lot since you can avoid most trash mob fights that you normally would want to have group clearing skills for.

When I die, am I sent to my last save, or just the last church I visited? Like, do I lose all the XP I've acquired since my last save? In most DQ games you have to revive everyone, but when you die in this one your whole party is back.

I believe it's the last church. With DQ games, you usually keep your XP, but lose half your gold on hand.

Even if you lose half your gold, it's pretty great that you don't have to pay to revive everyone.

Not had a game over yet, but I imagine it's half your gold lost. I am figuring that why they have the banks later in the game.

Mentioned how I liked the music to a friend and he mentioned the composer being a huge racist and a detriment to the entire series.

Uh, anyone know what he's talking about? That sounds kind of random but he's pretty adamant he's not making it up.

Wow, had my first wipe to Sir Leopard of all people. Mostly because he just one shots Angelo out of the blue and only the Hero had a revive that doesn't work half the time. Thankfully I was only a level behind on Jessie to get Kazing so that didn't happen again. Man Red with her final Knife skill just tears into Sir Leopard.

Yeah, it's actually pretty common knowledge that Koichi Sugiyama is a far right nationalist rear end in a top hat.

It's entirely the final skill; it's far and away the strongest skill in the game. Just all around ridiculous.

Fans are really good too though, for more utility. They're a good mob-clearer and near the end get a Kazing knockoff that 1) is slightly cheaper and 2) is a skill and therefore can't be fizzled.

He's not. Sugiyama's an asshat and probably the entire reason we got stuck without the orchestrated soundtrack this time.

If it helps, one of the recruitable monsters is named for him (Sugi the Dracky), so you can recruit him and send him out on his own to die a horrible horrible death over and over. :v:

It's all so jarring because Horii and Toriyama are both cool and good.

About to finish DQ8, so I probably going to either finish Pokemon Moon or go back to Dragon Quest 7. But I forget, did DQ7 get some of the nice quality of the life stuff 8 has like Hp and Mp filled after a level up or a useful way to get MP back?

Last Celebration
Mar 30, 2010
Nah, I thinks 7's remake was done way before 8's. But yeah, they kind of made most advanced vocations endgame-capable despite being unlocked 25% through the game, which means it takes very little effort ever to just one-round everything before the enemies can even move, so don't worry about it.

Instead of using the camera trick, I still think it's much faster to stand still and Whistle to grind. Metal Slimes and such will still appear, and I don't have to move an inch!
