Nah, the right move is to level up in her covenant first because the chaos pyromancies she offers are super good. Chaos Storm is, at any rate.

I mean, besides my first trip down there being some Loony Toons poo poo of stepping on a collapsing floor minute 1 of being down there before I could get to the bonfire. It feels a bit more like Tomb of Giants, minus the giants, and minus the darkness if you make use of the torch mechanics. That said Black Gulch is definitely the blighttown element and I hated that. (Boss was easy tho) That said, I could see that place being very annoying without going around and lightning everything up. I probably would have went that way had I not actually figured out how to use torches at some point. (The game shows you super early on, but I forgot pretty quickly and had to look it up after seeing "try torch" messages in a bunch of places) I ended up Lucky Teding my way through RRV. Didn't even realize what the deal was till I looked it up.

(Boss was easy tho) The Gutter does show off what the original torch system was going to be like, and I'd probably have preferred smaller areas of oppressive darkness scattered throughout the game instead of one big one. Black Gulch is pretty dumb, and it sort of personifies how DS2 is trying too hard to be a difficult game and not enough time on smart level design and world building. I like the Rotten itself though, how it keeps building statues as if it's lost someone or something and it's trying to recapture that. I wish all the Great Souls had at least that much characterization.

I hated the Gutter but I liked Black Gulch a lot. From the creepy green lighting, giant worms, Floormasters, the Abyss Portal, and the Giants stuck in the very bottom chamber. It really makes you feel like you dug too deep and found something you really shouldn't have.

Scholar of the First Sin on PC is basically that; No Man's Wharf in particular is near pitch-black without a torch; while other already dim areas like the Undead Crypt, the cave in Huntsman's Copse, the ruined archives leading up to Duke's Dear Freya are all noticeably gloomier, in addition to the Gutter and the Black Gulch.

DS2 report: Stumbled into the final boss without realizing it was the final boss. Thankfully they wrecked me and when I complained to a friend, they gave me the heads up to do the DLC first (or miss out till NG+) Sanctum City DLC down (mostly - got an optional boss to take care of) - just two DLC, an optional boss and the final boss to go? Can't decide if I want to get DS3 once I'm done or just wait it out till they put out the complete edition in April. Also, started watching the best friends playthrough of DS2. I'm so salty to see Scholar is responsible for most of the poo poo that gave me trouble in Forest of Giants. Also totally missed the shortcut where you blow up the wall.

Yeah. Only had time to try it once last night, went in with two NPC buddies but got annihilated by a back stab when I went to charge the one with the bow.

I really, really recommend not doing the co-op bosses because the gank squad is the easiest by far.

Does each DLC have one or something? Also what's the deal with the DLC lobby areas with the "this message is being channelled from far away" soapstones?

Each DLC has a Co-op boss, and they get worse as the DLC's progress. They're not really built for solo play, especially the last one.

It could've been a cool area with some tweaks, like if the reindeer were more just area hazards that came flying through the storm here and there for you to dodge.

I have a thing for video game areas with absurdly oppressive weather conditions; I loved Heavy Rain in L4D2, too. The one issue is that there's no bonfire before the boss so while I liked the area even I felt it was a slog getting to that boss over and over.
