I think part of the issue with the combat is that rag-tag enemies have a lot more diversity than a modern well-equipped military. As it is, the PMC soldiers here really have an unusual amount of enemy diversity, and some of them are stretching it, like the dudes without body armor and carrying pistols. A post-apocalyptic game makes every individual piece of modern military kit much more unusual.

A PMC that made the dubious decision to outfit all it's soldiers with bright red "shoot here" hats...

The only other example I can think of is Mafia III, which has a real good plot and pretty good voice acting stapled onto a moderately-okay open world sandbox which is mostly devoid of much interactivity (possibly deliberately). Quantic Dream think they're all that, and I guess their one demo of the sad old man was pretty nice, but they utterly fail to sell the fruits of all their labour as anything resembling human once it's all packaged into a videogame. Meanwhile, Naughty Dog don't fill the back of the box and 100% of their marketing with talk about how amazing and incredible their character models are, they just low-key stick all this amazing Emotion Technology into this dinky little action game and wait.

Games are weird.

The Witcher 3 has amazing direction and acting as well as being a fantastic game.

To be fair, it did have the Bethesda/Bioware problem of two people standing directly opposite to each other talking, with minimal animations.

I'm [constantly surprised how little Witcher 3 does that poo poo . There's usually some little camera flourish, wide shot or bit of custom animation to the conversations that makes Skyrim look like mannequin chat.

I like that the game actually tries to set you up to believe the pirate utopia thing really did work out when the city is first revealed and it keeps the ruse going JUST long enough that you'll really believe it... and then it goes "haha nah just fuckin with you they all killed each other because they're pirates, doy"

Anyway, yeah. I'm starting to think that Naughty Dog is officially specializing in trojan-ing in new developments in animation and expression by way of passable-to-excellent action games.

It's long been a lament of mine - and I think of several of the higherups at Naughty Dog - that you basically can't ever see a game with this level of animation, technology and production values that isn't a setpiece shooter of some kind. The closest ND ever came was The Last of Us, which itself wasn't beyond occasionally locking you in a room and forcing you to shoot your way out. Uncharted 4 lets you stealth into several encounters, and even stealth past certain encounters, but... nope. It's fundamentally just a pretty great shooter (which falls apart on higher difficulties).

I don't think there's any other people who make games like this, where the main draw of a setpiece-action game is the story cutscenes, and not even just for the story, but for the acting, and for the technology by which the acting is portrayed in-engine. The only other example I can think of is Mafia III, which has a real good plot and pretty good voice acting stapled onto a moderately-okay open world sandbox which is mostly devoid of much interactivity (possibly deliberately). I think Mafia 3 may have suffered the same problem as Mafia 2: the developers really wanted to make a somewhat linear, story-based action game but were required to make an open world sandbox because that's what everyone thinks is "in" now. Mafia 2 is probably the most heavily scripted sandbox game I've ever seen, with a mostly empty open world and various time skips and setting changes. The game flows really well if you ignore the sandbox portion and just go from story mission to story mission, but there's little for you to do outside of it beyond buying clothes and it usually doesn't make a whole lot of sense for Vito to be adventuring throughout the city robbing stores and stealing cars anyway.

RareAcumen posted:

It's very Dark Souls now. You're lighting piles of bones on fire now, after all.

I'm pretty impressed with how Naughty Dog went so far into the horror genre with this section of the game. Uncharted has only had minor elements of it before, but the caves are badass.

Not sure if it's still online but one of the lead devs for Mafia 2 quit after 2K screwed with his game and spilled the beans about the messy production that game had. I was a huge fan of the original (mostly for the story), but 2 was a giant disappointment. The story has no real resolution (I think maybe in the DLC it was added?), you have to go back and forth across the same map multiple times during the same mission while being careful not to speed, and I thought the characters sucked.

In the original Mafia the protagonist gets involved with the Mob because he drove a taxi during the Depression which gets destroyed by one Mob family. Basically to make ends meet he joins up with the other family and things go from there. The characters are way more fleshed out than in 2. It's actually a perfect Mob story because while it does initially play up the money and glamour things eventually go downhill when greed and paranoia take over and characters have to take sides against each other. It's very underrated IMO. The gameplay is dated now but at the time it was great.

Mafia 2 has a pretty similar storyline (young guy gets involved with the Mafia to pay family debts, falls in love with the glamorous life, and eventually loses everything because it's harsher than it looked on the outside), but you're correct in that it ends on a cliffhanger. The DLC just covers what Joe does during the time skip while Vito is in prison and doesn't actually explain what happens in the finale. It's not really "no resolution", but it ends ambiguously similar to The Sopranos.

Mafia 3 has Vito as a recruitable ally and reveals Joe managed to overpower the mobsters and free himself, but while trying to work in Chicago he got betrayed and dismembered.

I also didn't like how Mafia 2 has the two main characters re-enact the epilogue scene from the original. In the original it was both sad and brutal, but the way they do it in the sequel as a one-off mission is not good

Yeah, you had Madagascar, then out in King's Bay we had the cluster of islands with the giant compass arrow mechanisms, and finally we have Libertalia's island even further out. So we might still be in King's Bay or maybe a little bit into the Indian ocean now, since I don't remember if Libertalia was visible from the last compass arrow or if we just had a direction.
