If the 2016 GOP primary had been between Jeb Bush, Donald Trump, and three other rando no-hopers (let's say Fiorina, Carson, and Kasich), Jeb probably would have won the primary in a squeaker and then lost to Hillary Clinton in the lowest turnout general election in history. The presence of other base-pleasing ideologues like Cruz and Paul and establishment-pleasing empty suits like Rubio and Christie split the party's support system up, which allowed Trump to survive long enough to embarrass Jeb on the debate stage, say enough ridiculous poo poo to dominate press coverage all the time, and pick the others off one at a time until there was nobody left. And that won the GOP an election. So I say, for the 2020 primaries, flood the loving stage and let's see who sinks and who swims.Al! posted:drat it irene, you were supposed to NOT make the perfect the enemy of the good and now we have trumps all over the place. good going irene The problem with saying "the perfect is the enemy of the good" all the time is when the good is actually bad

#BernieOrBust and #NeverTrump are two things that never really happened but could have. Bernie and Cruz or someone both running in the general and we would probably have a different president now.

The left is dead, Dems will field someone like Booker in 2020 and win and the establishment Dems will view it as a repudiation of the Bernie wing (as if they needed any further evidence of that in their eyes). There will never be meaningful leftward progress in America in the next 20 years or so because there's simply not even a hypothetical path for it to take. Good luck maintaining even BAU neoliberalism as the climate destroys the world and puts "refugee" onto the resume of half of the world's workers.

loquacius posted:The problem with saying "the perfect is the enemy of the good" all the time is when the good is actually bad Yeah I wouldn't say that someone like Booker even qualifies as "good." He lives in a fantasy land where the American economy still works for the middle class and things like drug prices and college tuition haven't spiraled totally out of control, I don't trust him to address any of these issues at all. Basically the only good thing you can say about him on economics is that he isn't as actively bad as a Republican, that's not good enough.
