I guess it's a petty thing to stop liking stuff over, but after that it seemed like the vast majority of LPs that came out were basically just the same youtube e-celebrety bullshit rather than people wanting to show off a game and have fun.

Before it got split into its own subforum there would be pages and pages of ranting anger about LPing a game that just came out. Apparently not reading the thread full of spoilers was too hard for people that were or were wanting to play the game. That's where the 6 month rule came from. Also once it split was about the time I stopped following them.

Darkid's Resident Evil series is still the best LP.

The manger babies don't have feelings. You said it yourself.
From what I remember, the six month rule was mainly done so that people wouldn't rush out a low-effort LP of a game that just came out so they could be the first to LP it.

Then eventually it shorted down to 3 months.

And then they got rid of the rule altogether since things like HD Remakes and DLC added a lot of grey area to that rule.

I'd never heard that rule before, wonder what the reasoning was. If it was "let the creator make money instead of people just playing it willy-nilly", well, that's dumb and not the forums job to enforce. Spoilers likewise. Maybe it was to prevent people from doing low effort LPs that are nonetheless popular because they are of the hot new game? This gets the driveby LPer free youtube hitpoints without much effort. This would be bad because it reduces signal to noise. Also a bunch of people probably want to LP any given new game, and how do you decide who does it? Well, I don't know, but you're probably pretty dedicated if you still want to do it 6 months later.

It was made to stop poo poo like everyone competing to get the first LP of the newest game done as quick as possible.

The weirdest LP thread was the last Porn Game thread before they got banned. If I recall correctly they were grudgingly allowed until a mod finally went "What the gently caress, why are these here?" and the thread got tossed to YCS.

Alot of this was contingent on their not being a giant YouTube LP scene.

There was a time when YouTube limited you to 10 minutes and had really shut video compression, which made for really fragmented LP videos and horrible pixelation.

After a while YouTube extended the length to 15 minutes and got rid of the length entirely, and allowed for HD streaming which is when their LP community really exploded.

I think I vaguely remember this happening. At least, I remember a guy who kept trying to LP a bunch of game that were obviously porn VNs. I don't think I was the one who dealt with it in the end. Or maybe I'm remembering wrong and it was before I was a mod.

As has been said, the six month rule and its successor the three month rule were to stop people rushing to LP new games without putting a shred of effort in just so they could say they were the first or some dumb poo poo, or to capitalize on new-game hype for fame and views. There was a problem. Lots of people were doing a stupid thing, so we banned it. You'd have to ask slowbeef to confirm, but I imagine the rationale was that there was more to gain by cutting out the poo poo threads than by allowing very few possibly-good day-one LPs.

Nowadays, all the people who want to LP like that aren't even here. We still get the occasional blow-in who's heard some hearsay that this is some kind of LP mecca and shows up with just a channel link, but the proportion of day-one rushers has gone way down, so we don't need the rule anymore. Now, if someone wants to LP a game on day one and actually put in work, they can.

People are probably still going to be wary if you show up on March 3rd with Breath of the Wild, and maybe one idiot will show up with a thread that's just a link to a playlist and nothing else and get gassed, but we have just enough trust in our users to let them try if they want to.

Was that the guy with the puking banana avatar? Haven't seen him in ages, I guess that's why.

I recall Deceased Crab's last attempt at posting in LP was pretty funny - he was just doing a youtube dump of some shoot-em-up and people were giving him poo poo in the thread for it. His solution was to close the thread, and then open a new pretty much identical thread to get rid of all the bad posts he didn't want to see. He got either banned or probated for it and hasn't posted in LP since.
Guy was always a nasty piece of work though, always baffled he puts on this nice cheerful happy-go-lucky facade in his videos, then you scroll down to the comments and someone made a spelling error while making a comment, so he tells them to kill themselves and blocks them.

At the time that the game was being LP'ed, it was not available in English at all. Orenronen was translating it on the fly for the LP, meaning for ANYBODY who wanted to see it in English, reading that LP was literally the only way to experience the game.

This made it extremely popular outside of the forums, and brought a lot of people in, which in turn led to those who came here for the Dangan Rompa LP annoying the hell out of everybody else, which in turn led to a bunch of thread-making GBS threads.

Dangan Ronpa was a rare confluence of several factors, but in brief it was just very popular, and as is always the case with popular things, a large amount of its following was poo poo.

The game itself was characteristic and charming (and, yes, anime), was a really good murder mystery (a genre that encourages active speculation and participation by the viewer), that was available in English for the first time ever, with no spoilers or other information anywhere on the internet. The whole experience was just plain fun.

All of these things happened at the same time, and... well, it got very lucky. The thing basically hit a critical mass; it got a following, word got out, it caught Tumblr's imagination, and before we knew it everyone was obsessed with this weird quirky anime murder mystery that could only be gotten here. The result - a lot of people all descending on Something Awful, and most of them with no idea how the forum operated.

because LPs are fun to watch? the specific appeal varies from LP to LP and there's a lot of staggeringly awful ones, but some of them are really funny, some of them are legit informative (Research Indicates' Jurassic Park: Trespasser LP loving owns), and some of them are showing off some bizarre poo poo I've never even heard of before and that has its own appeal even if the commentary sucks.

I think it was a bit of all of the above. The problem with new games and LPs is that on youtube and poo poo the second a game comes out there is inevitably a dozen Lets Plays within the hour and they're poo poo. It's just rushed videos of idiots who have never played the game over-reacting to everything that happens while they try to figure out how to play the game. This gets them a lot of followers who just want to see the latest gameplay of the latest game and instead get a warped view of it because after seeing some jackass on youtube die to the same Dark Souls trap fifty times and cry about how unfair the game is, people are going to start parroting how poo poo the game is. So they gain free popularity points, and in a worst case scenario it might be something like a telletale game where it's heavily story driven with minimal gameplay and people are going to watch it so they don't feel compelled to spend money on it.

The 3 month rule, I misremembered and thought it was only 30 days above, basically just weeded out that poo poo from the forums. When it went away a lot more people with the youtube superstar mentality started showing up and a lot more people started getting banned for just registering and posting big dumb youtube link dumps to their latest LP of whatever new release just came out and it was gradually over taken by people talking about how awesome their streams were and how everyone should watch them stream.

Actually I think by tonight I think I'll have a "pyf lp" thread, but I have a question.

There's just so much lp drama. I'm want people to just say what they like and not have some else be like "lol you like JONTRON? Or for people to keep asking "why did all those let's play forum people autoban themselves" over and over again without talking about games. Or for g*****g*** to inevitably become a topic.

On the other hand ixnaying the drama talk completely feels a little restricting. Like... like it or not I've seen this poo poo unfold from a few people asking the thread for what to do in an Oregon trail game to something that is now a """""""career""""""", there's a lot of fun poo poo to talk about and any given story could be classified as drama depending on who's reading it.

Wasn't the LPer obstinately presenting the games as "look how weird these are," putting all the porn behind NSFW links, and just discussing the game as blandly as possible? The thread reactions got creepy and a mod finally stepped in? Maybe it was a new mod at the time? But this was back when there would be adult visual novel and other gross game reviews as a front page feature doing essentially the same thing ("look at this weird hentai game we found, also you can buy them on J List!").

A very good LP here was an Animal Crossing one that got very dark, but still very good. At the end the LPer opened up the town for folks to visit.
