The Critic episode stands out as a weird exception to how cringy and poo poo crossovers are.

Don't even think they showed the Critic here in England at the time, but it was still a great episode.

The kind of sense of humor (and the STYLE with which it is carried) that the Critic used felt almost one of a kind, and it's hard to find something similar these days.

Still never seen The Critic. Guess I should change that, huh? Tell a lie, I saw the Orson Wells peas bit. That was p.good.

The closest thing is probably Bob's Burgers mixed with family guy in that it genuinely liked the characters it portrayed but had a lot of pop culture/cut away scenes. But it was way before either of those shows was a thing so I'd guess it probably gained the most influence from Leslie Nielsen comedies?

The Critic is a better show than either of those though, and I really like Bob's Burgers. Critics probably my favorite cartoon comedy show ever although Mission Hill and Space Ghost are close

Or maybe the baseball players didn't take themselves as seriously as later celebs did. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IAJHDiO8Fr0 The parody song used for this ended up being more well known than the original.

Now they just shoehorn on flavours of the month.

Did the Simpsons writers make up a conversation from Marge like they did with Barbara Bush, or was that a joke cover for an interview with Matt Groeining? I can't figure out if I would found it more or less disturbing if I went to a dude's house and saw that on the coffee table versus a regular Playboy.

quote:During the early years of the show, the staff was forced by the Fox network into doing clip shows to save money.[5] There was originally intense pressure on the producers of the show to create extra episodes in each season, and the plan was to make four clip shows per season to meet that limit. Writers and producers, however, felt that this many clip shows would alienate fans of the series. Fox executives actually wanted to make every fifth Simpsons episode a clip show to save money.
