I thought the Devils looked pretty good tonight, that was probably the quickest/crispest they've played since early in the year. Then again it was against Buffalo and Schneider played like Schneider.

As an Australian, I can confirm that making your own man-made island off the south east coast of Western Australia would create a nicer, and - at only the hundreds of millions - probably a cheaper alternative to living in Perth.

To me the Sabres are a weird team in that every time I watch them they always look better than their record and team suggest they would or should.

They looked dangerous when they had the puck against the Devils but they got broken down really easily when they didn't. For some reason the Devils own them this year (3-0-0).

Phil is doing fine. Equal third in goals with Connor Sheary, outright third in points and first in assists. Yeah, you read that right, first in assists.
The H and B parts aren't doing to bad either. It's not out of the realm of possibility that the team doesn't need them to all be on the same line all of the time and can use their flexibility to stretch the scoring out through the 2nd to 4th lines.

God I with the Habs could do that, instead it's "Who's burning up in RaduLove tonight!" vs "Who isn't getting on the scoreboard tonight!". And by "tonight" I mean, "while I watch in my pyjamas while eating two minute noodles for lunch".

This was an interesting little factoid and it got me wondering:

https://twitter.com/JapersRink/status/828698152920309766

Of all the teams doing well this season the Caps are definitely the most stacked with 1st rounders, but all those teams have a good chunk of high picks throughout the top of the roster. Really, every almost every team has at least a few throughout the roster and some of the under-performing teams are pretty stacked with 1st and 2nd round players (Colorodo).

To me, the most interesting outlier is Pittsburgh who are completely the opposite in being very good with tons of low or undrafted players and a lot from outside the org: http://www.rosterresource.com/nhl-pittsburgh-penguins/

Boston also has very few high picks but, you know, isn't very good.

edit:

Completely unrelated to any of the above, but holy poo poo Arizona...

Firing Julien is retarded because the only reason the Bruins aren't in the toilet, in my opinion, is because Julien is a very good coach. I don't see how you can possibly replace him with any of the coaches who are available. Hopefully they just stick with Cassidy for the rest of the year and see who's around in the summer. An impulse Capuano hire or something would loving suck.

Aphrodite posted:

Yeah, my one complaint with Julien has always been that he's not great with younger guys and likes to rely on his veterans. He did a little better with Carlo but I think that's out of necessity. I remember when Seguin and Pastrnak were both regular 3rd or 4th line players because they're kids or whatever BS reason he had.

To me the funniest part is that EVERYONE knows that Julien wasn't the problem. The fans, the media, the players, even Sweeney and Neely - but they're not going to fire themselves for putting together a mostly-garbage roster, so instead they do this.

I'm honestly surprised they're doing this now. If things don't turn around mighty quick, the crosshairs are going to turn on Sweeney in short order. If he'd waited until the end of the season, he likely would've bought himself until the end of 2017/18. It's what Benning/Linden are doing with Desjardins. Imply heavily that it's all the coach's fault, but don't fire him until the summer so management's poor decisions can't take the full brunt of the blame. The difference is that Julien is a legitimately good coach. I'd be solidly on board with the Canucks hiring him, and with the Benning connection that's actually quite possible.
