Henchman of Santa posted:Not killing, not stealing and not trying to gently caress people's wives are pretty reasonable. Sure, those are good ones. But look at the full list:
The first four are just "be Christian". Five sounds good, but some parents really don't deserve honouring. Six, eight, nine and ten are pretty good if a little oversimplified. Seven is a bit of a problem, depending on how you interpret it. If you take it to mean "don't be unfaithful to those who love you" then it's fine, but if you interpret it more literally then it's dumb. So you've got four relatively good ones, two maybes, and four that are just really Christian-specific.

If you jettison the first 4 due to being Christian and just want to concentrate on the non religious ones they're pretty good. They basically say "be a good person".

There is absolutely no reason priests shouldn't be allowed to get married. It started as a lovely property scheme and it needs to die as one. There's also zero reason not to legalize prostitution and it's bizarre we've come this far without doing it.

# ? Feb 8, 2017 05:48 |

There is also the option of allowing both the buying and selling of sex, but not pimping. Some places have legal prostitution, but in an attempt to lessen the possibility of exploitation, it is not legal to earn money of prostitution as a middle-man or manager.

Neither of those is without problems, as buying being illegal still drives it underground, and any form of organizing, such as hiring security, can be considered pimping.

Reading about sex slavery and human trafficking and sexual violence makes me weep. It is so imperative that we become energy beings of pure consciousness as soon as possible. We MUST do away with our base carnal nature and purge ourselves of our lower animalistic urges if we are to ascend to a new level of reality. I have already done this and exist purely on the higher cosmic plane, descending only to take wicked dumps and rip farts and eat boogers (the only carnal pleasures that are acceptable, imo), then ascending again to dwell in pure bliss.

Your obsession with dumps, farts and boogers makes you look and sound like an 8 year old, and what we truly need is not those things, but a Demolition Man style world where vulgarity is punished and all sex is virtual. Maybe in that world you can get your boggle sorted out.

I was raised male and dont know anything about what its like to grow up female. I think biological sex matters because whether or not you have one type of body or another determines how you are treated by society. If you have a vagina and uterus, society has expectations of you and pigeon holes you; same for when you have a dick and dangly wrinkly hairy balls. All my opinoons on feminist issues (and all other issues, to be honest, but thats neither here nor there) are worthless. But people, especially feminists, are very nice and accomodating, even if I dont believe for one second that they really think I'm a woman XD .

Low Desert Punk posted:Trying to remain totally faithful to a book when adapting it to film or TV is absolutely ridiculous, and it's the reason why so many adaptations are terrible. It's a fundamental misunderstanding about how both mediums work, it's unreasonable and stupid to expect everything that happens in the book to happen in its adaptation with no changes. More often than not people who criticise these adaptations really are complaining about "the tone of the book" being changed, but can't articulate it in a way that makes sense and so focus in on specific details that are "wrong" as the cause of their dissatisfaction. Tom Bombadil was missing from The Lord of the Rings films, and so were the ideas about nature, power, love, isolation and inevitable decay that his presence introduced to rest of the narrative.

By default nature has the switch flipped to "on" for allowing us to procreate. The next step of society is we need to flip that switch to off. We should all be sterilized and BOTH parties need to wear a patch to enable conception. No tests to pass to get the patch, no fee, put the patch in vending machines on the street corner for all I care. But both parties need to be wearing the patch for a couple days at least before conception to be possible. Or take a pill, or get a shot. I don't care. But conscious and deliberate action to enable procreation instead of prevent is what I'm saying. Cut down on these "oops" babies.

sassassin posted:More often than not people who criticise these adaptations really are complaining about "the tone of the book" being changed, but can't articulate it in a way that makes sense and so focus in on specific details that are "wrong" as the cause of their dissatisfaction. Speaking of adaptations, I thought The Exorcist was a really neat example of translation. Blatty wrote both the book and the screenplay with entire segments of dialogue are stripped straight from the book and placed on the screen. They're nearly identical and both work beautifully, but somehow in completely different ways. While the adaptation is a straight up horror movie, the book is almost entirely about Karras' inner struggle with his faith and uses the event to explore its rationalization through contemporary (at the time) psychology. Karras is never fully convinced of her possession and scrutinizes how Regan's actions can be explained using logic rather than faith. I love both takes. Another one that translated really well was The Haunting. The 1963 adaptation also strips entire conversations from the book, but changes the character of Grace(for the better, IMO). That's probably one of the closest adaptations I've seen that keeps the book's spirit fully intact.

It kinda sucks that Peter Jackson's LOTR films have become the official "version" of Tolkien's stories. If you look at various artwork made by different artists, many of them seem to base their own art on John Howe and Alan Lee's illustrations. The Nazgul all kinda look the same, the elves all kinda look the same, etc. Before the movies came out, it seemed like there was more room for personal interpretation. And i'm just talking about visual style, here. Just the look of the costumes and armour and castles. It really sucks that we didnt get Guillermo Del Toro's Hobbit movie.
