The Lodge is a really cool idea to talk about but playing as the cryptid for a long period of time would be very boring. Especially if your main goal is, "do not get caught, do not leave clues". Each one would need a separate and unique goal. So you could have your hunter XP and your cryptid XP. Servers would have to be divided by cryptid or cryptid group. That way, if you are playing Bigfoot but get caught, your BF XP wouldn't go to waste because there are 20 other monsters to rotate through. Or monster XP is just per "life" and resets on capture or kill.

Improbable Lobster posted:Honestly I'd rather have the cryptids AI controlled I really like the idea of having the opportunity to play as a cryptid after catching one of them, but being able to cash in that chip whenever you want. They'd have to implement some sort of incentive for the cryptids to get near the humans though (like the goatsucker thing, for example). Maybe they get more points for the more evidence that the human characters gather about them without them getting caught - like instead of just hiding, their job is to deliberately harry the other players, but they have no actual defenses besides running and hiding, since a single touch will 'kill' them.

They were really close to discussing something like this, but I was hoping they would talk about the cryptids getting their own skill trees as well as the hunters. Those could probably get pretty buck wild depending on the creature in question, but they could involve ways to more easily gently caress with the hunters like you mentioned, as well as offer more ways to evade the hunters. For instance, The Yeti gets the ability to shroud himself in a snowstorm if you move high enough up the Stealth tree, or Bigfoot gets a roar loud enough to cause a nearby hunter to drop their camera and flee if you invest in the Intimidation tree...stuff like that. This would be a really fun game. I want it almost as bad as I want that story based "one minute of perfected play per day" mobile game they started to develop and dropped because it was too good and not all that funny

Not really feeling Peacecraft. Maybe it's because I never played WoW, but if dying just means picking up where you left off and slogging forward, what're the stakes? Plus the jokes are so few and far between, it really feels like an idea that could have used a little more fleshing out.

The stakes I guess are ~10% item durability loss per death but he dies in one hit anyway and I'm not sure he's even out of the newbie levels were that turns on. he also had enough money given to him that repair costs will be easily met. Also he's on a pvp server and players are more persistent than monsters. I think he just wanted an excuse to go back and revisit WoW

This might be one of those things where it's infinitely more interesting if you've played the game.

Yeah-- I'm super interested in it, but I've also been playing WoW (on and off; I'm unsubbed at the moment) for like 11 years so a lot of the fun is seeing Griffin being hit with how much the game has changed since he last played it and trying to get to grips with how to exist in this weird virtual world. Like one of my favorite bits is in the first episode and he sees how much mounts cost and he's like "wow, that's like infinite money", and then he gets to Stormwind and sees what a completely inflated shithole the WoW economy has become, with basic low-level trade goods selling for hundreds of gold a stack.

He's just perpetuating the cycle! (He really should do some of those weekly events. A bunch of them, like Darkmoon Faire, have ways to get some xp without killing, and it would be a fun chance of pace compared to just running for twenty minutes.)

I finished my 2nd listen-though tonight, culminating with the episode from 2 weeks ago, and I am quite ready to pick right up where we left off in TAZ. I wonder if Taako will bust out the sauté in the upcoming episode, or if he's completely forgotten about it like I did (until I listened to this arc a second time). To be fair it's probably been rendered obsolete by the reveal of the invisible red robe anyway

(I do think Griffin tends to give Justin a lot more leeway than the other two when it comes to breaking spell rules, but then again Justin's always the one busting out some crazy awesome idea that requires rule-bending, like Garyl or "you work for me now")timp posted:I wonder if Taako will bust out the sauté in the upcoming episode, or if he's completely forgotten about it like I did (until I listened to this arc a second time). I know they sometimes say they go back and re-listen. And especially for this arc, with the huge time gaps, I wouldn't be surprised if Griffin just asked them all to give the arc a listen just to keep things on a narrative flow...

If it weren't for a podcast I'd say the fast and loose magic rules should totally be reined in for Travis's sake so he doesn't feel underpowered and useless - "I can't wait to cast axe." But that doesn't make for good radio so I totally get it.Scuzzywuffit posted:I bought tickets for my friends and they apparently did the same for me. Quite frankly, Griff kinda brought this on himself. An arc that puts the players in a tightly-controlled loop that they have to find a way to break out of before the stakes rise to fatal proportions? One of the boys finding a way to break Wonderland so hard it breaks the campaign too is downright poetic. (The episode sounds lit and I'm sure Griffin is more pleased about putting on a good show than he is cranky about plans getting subverted)

The absolute best part of any tabletop RPG is when your players do something completely unexpected and destroy whatever plans you had, leading to improvising like a madman. The things you come up with in crunch time often are the most memorable parts of a campaign. Thanks to my players always looking for ways to upend the game, I don't plan anything out except in broad strokes and mostly make everything up as we go. I'll bet Griffin has to take a ton of notes to keep it all straight.

Yeah, the fact that Griffin has to do all this improvising as well as setting up a multiple arc-level overarching story+a conclusion is pretty drat amazing.

But that doesn't make for good radio so I totally get it. As somebody who prefers to play melee dudes in D&D, I really feel for Travis when he's struggling to come up with super convoluted plans to do something cool without any magic. I breathed a sigh of relief when Justin said "You don't think a wet rope is conductive, do you?" but Griffin let it fly anyway. I can't count the number of times I've had a DM drag in IRL physics to say no to non-casters while letting the casters go nuts. I think the way to ameliorate this is to fill scenery with a lot of tiny details that can be used in a fight, ala a set in a Jackie Chan film; it's just that most DMs (self included) don't go through the effort of detailing stuff to that level. Serf posted:The absolute best part of any tabletop RPG is when your players do something completely unexpected and destroy whatever plans you had, leading to improvising like a madman. I keep a loose skeleton on the big plot points the PCs will (probably) hit and the critical NPCs, and the rest is just improvised depending on what the players do.
