My (extremely limited) understanding is that a vaguely French-style nationalism and xenophobia are indeed problems in Quebec, and possible precipitating factors in the shooting, but that just about everything else in JJ's column is wrong. edit: to be clear, I'm thinking of that Charter of Values PQ/BQ thing, not language laws. Ways you can satirize Obama: - His speech patterns (lots of uhs and ers) - His mole - His occasional tendency to be indecisive when action is required (the biggest flaw of his presidency IMO and I love Obama) Ways that idiots satirize Obama: - He sure is uppity - lol he's black

Parliament is in session. Bill Leak: Turnbull is starting the new year of parliament by going full out on the attack on Opposition Leader Bill Shorten (pictured), which Leak and the Australian love. David Rowe: A bunch of stuff that happened in parliament. Right: Rowe's take on Turnbull in attack mode. Back: Power security in South Australia is a top priority for the government and Turnbull is starting to go close to full Abbott on the War on Windmills. Left: The government is scrapping the Gold Life Pass, a perk for ex-pollies to get free business class travel if they have been around for long enough. Senator Ian Macdonald the current longest serving politician broke from the rest of the government to defend politicians and their perks. Front: Treasurer Scott Morrison came to question time with a lump of coal and passed it around for the rest of government to play with, this is a thing that happened in our parliament. Not pictured, Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce is a coal wizard:

Pants Donkey posted:Democrats have acted as if government was full of rational actors working for the betterment of the country as opposed to troglodytes making naked power grabs. They seem to be waking up to the fact that the GOP actually is a bigoted bastion of self-interest, but we'll see if they can commit to years of actual opposition. Lord Hydronium posted:The problem with using "they are vetted" as a main argument is that you're implicitly conceding the idea that the issue is really about vetting. You could give every immigrant sodium pentathol and put them on the rack and the conservative argument would still be that we aren't vetting hard enough. Because they don't actually care about vetting, they want a ban on immigration and will use anything as an excuse. Anything you do short of a ban will just be met with "it's not good enough", so the best strategy is to skip around that whole line of distraction and just strike at the heart of the matter, which is that immigration is a net good and we're America, dammit, Statue of Liberty, melting pot and all the rest. The media has been cowed by Conservatives over the years into believing if they say anything outside of stating each side's opinion they might be thought of as "biased". In that environment it is extremely difficult to fight the kind of misinformation the Right has been peddling. To anyone not closely following politics it really does seem like "both sides are the same" despite one side dispensing the intellectual equivalent of putrefied horse flesh and calling it steak tartare! Rebochan posted:So not actually a comic, but apparently J.J. McCullough wrote a WaPo column on the Quebec City shootings that got the Quebec parliament super miffed. I like JJ as a cartoonist and essayist. Really, I do. He serves the same function as someone like the Redpanels guy does (though to his credit nowhere he's nowhere near as repugnant) in showing me that old hatreds aren't that old after all and how conservatism is going to be formulating its arguments moving forward. Discendo Vox posted:My (extremely limited) understanding is that a vaguely French-style nationalism and xenophobia are indeed problems in Quebec, and possible precipitating factors in the shooting, but that just about everything else in JJ's column is wrong. You are mainly correct. It's a little more complicated than that on the language front (and that's an argument for another thread) but the Charter of Values was absolutely a way to sneakily push historically western/Christian cultural norms into public spaces. They weren't even particularly clever about their being underhanded. JJ, however, is completely out to lunch in that column. If you can find any kind of common thread between Denis Lortie (shot up Parliament) Marc Lépine (shot only women at a university), Valery Fabrikant (shot coworkers an a university), Kimveer Gill (shot random people in a college), Richard Henry Bain (shot up a political gathering/celebration following a PQ provincial election win) and Alexandre Bissonnette (shot up a mosque) then by all means I'm willing to listen because it IS unusual that this many isolated incidents happened in this one province, his thesis of "cause is probably Quebec bad" is laughably unsupported by even a basic thesis.

Muslim ban just got dealt another crushing blow. Cue Garrison depicting the judges as some sort of three-headed chimera that Trump's battling in his shining armor. He appears to be losing but he's got some sort of MacGuffin ace-in-the-hole behind his back that he's about to unleash. Cue Lester with one of the judges having a conversation with a person in the diner who suddenly reveals he's a terrorist and chops off his/her head. Cue Ramirez picking some flavor-of-the-month democrat to burn. Probably Obama on vacation. Cue Bennet with the missing letters cartoon.
