I don't believe in god(s) but god speed you crazy diamond.

So there is a hierarchy to taxis in Korea. White / orange taxis are 'normal' taxis. The black ones are 'deluxe' taxis, which is code for "I'm so loving late I'm willing to spend the extra money to put your license on the line and get to where I need to be asap."

Sorry to hear you couldn't enjoy Itaewon. Personally, I usually steer people away from Itaewon because it caters to the wrong crowd.

I forget who said it a few pages back, but the phrase "Mr Magoo-ing their way through life" has had me laughing for days. I realize it's one of those "NOT ALL CHINESE" tropes, but there seems to be a common thread in just about every anecdote that involves people who are seemingly oblivious to their surroundings - either on purpose (for face savings?) or just by virtue of being somewhat anonymous in such a populated country.

Yeah, though there's some variety to that where you get Blonde Woman= Russian Hooker, which is a hoot to note in Chinar

I came to terms with waygook and laowai when I stopped defining it as a label (foreigner) and instead defined it as a non inclusive grouping term (not east Asian/korean/han). When you grow up in a 99.99% homogeneous country and all you see is people of the same ethnicity for 18, 25, 40+ years it probably becomes hard to break the habit of pointing out something that is normally a surprise (seeing a nonchinese in the average town in China.)
I can kinda get what you're saying but there's deffo a level of will obtuseness going on there that didn't happen say, in the Nordics, where if you're slightly swarthy people feared you were the perfidious Turk come to ravage them

Everyone may have been útlending but at least they realized they were the foreigners when they were abroad. It's the same poo poo you had from the English (and still kinda do) where they would always define the world into them and the rest

The problem wasn't really the fault of Itaewon. The same would have happened almost anywhere else as doing a social activity solo will always suck and no amount of blog reading is ever going to make up for having broken English conversations.

Itaewon is a fine place to go to if you want to see hosed up versions of every current significant bits of pop culture, especially western culture with a naturally American bent given the history.

Do Chinese also call other asians "laowai"? Or is it like the Thai word "farang" where it mostly just applies to white people?

They tend to use nation-specific ones for their neighbours, from what I've heard. Riben Gou, Gaoli Bang Zi, Lao Yin, that kinda thing.

The film lords him as a hero naturally and how he forms part of Korea's culture but even that doesn't hide the fact he went crazy with the idea of total war given how well it worked on Japan and Germany.

Hitting the breaks is admitting you're driving bad or made a mistake. Best to keep going, act like you mean to do it and they are in the wrong to be in the way.

Saw the biggest kan renao crowd I've ever seen last night, must have been about 1000 people. Nothing intersting was happening, the police where talking to a couple of guys and they were all laughing and joking then they all got in the police van and left. It was outside a chuan chuan restaurant near my house that is really popular. This place is always absolutely packed and has a giant queue outside, recently they opened a new place that is exactly the same about 20 metres down the road. It's always empty, it has the same food, staff, decor, etc but no one will go there because no people there means the food is bad, better go que up for 2 hours at the other one which is exactly the same.

I wanted to like the WuLiangYe. It smells amazing. But the taste is Wrong. It tastes like the rubber feet you put under chairs on hardwood. I had a weird childhood. I think traveling killed the 2 bottles I got as a gift. One had leaked in flight, it was terrible and clearly spoiled. The second one was promising, but the taste just isn't....pleasant. It was really disheartening. I will track another bottle down when I have a chance -I'm sure I just had a bad batch.
