My wifes family thinks I have legendary alcohol tolerance because I pounded through a bottle of Wuliangye with them in a 3 shots for their 1 ratio. The secret is taking a walk immediately after dinner and throwing up profusely into the neighbors bushes until their plants are good and dead.

Ahaha So i looked up this baijiu i got, its Luzhou Laojiao. It has a wikipedia article which says it has a fragrance of "fermented peaches." It sure does come in a fancy bottle. it's got a little metal collar around the neck, and a coin, which i expect is to break the ceramic seal. I hope I can re-close it. Ofc I can smell the baijiu through the sealed bottle before opening it. E: phew it has an actual proper rubber stopper thing, you break the metal collar to open it. hakimashou fucked around with this message at 05:48 on Feb 11, 2017 |

hakimashou posted:I started a camp fire once with er guo tou. It's nasty stuff. My introduction to it was taking the taxi home with some of the Chinese English Teachers I worked with at the time. I asked them what they liked to drink. They were women, so they all said "I don't drink". It was terribly depressing to hear from 3 grown-rear end women, but understandable. Then the short, stout one, who kind of reminded me of a LOTR dwarf sans beard piped up "My father, he drinks the ah, uh, er, ah shenma, shenma, Er Guo Tou" "Er Guo Tou?" I ask, intrigued. "Yes, Er Guo Tou. It is very strong. Maybe you will like it". I got her to help me with the pronunciation a few times, and didn't quite understand why the others seemed to be giggling at the whole thing. The second I got out of the cab I went to the depanneur outside of the complex I lived in. "Er Guo Tou", I proudly announce to the shopkeeper, who seems to know me as the weird foreigner who buys peach juice (the art on the bottle makes it look like a hot air balloon being hefted into the air by a butt) and beer. He does this double-blink thing and points me to these little utilitarian green glass bottles that I at least recognise Er, the character for 2 on. I point at it and he nods a yes, so I buy a bottle. It cost less than 10 rmb, I think. I go home and proceed to have a couple sips, and realise what terrifying world I have stepped into. I then drink about half the bottle out of sheer stubbornness, unsuccessfully mixing it with coke, juice, and water, before deciding to just give up and force swigs of it between moments of drunken courage. The hangover was awful, but at the very least I was able to say "Oh, yes, the Er Guo Tou, I drank it. Very nice" to the teacher and confuse the heck out of the chinese teachers by doing so. Long story short: Er Guo Tou is cost effective and literally nothing else.

Really surprised to see 43 new posts and they weren't about "NO, THIS BEER ISN'T BAD, BELIEVE ME. BUT THIS ONE BEER THAT ONE TIME, OH MAN." That girl that took me to lunch before the holiday (when I went to sign papers in person) has become one of my coolest Chinese friends. She became a Buddhist, then read a bunch of Hindu philosophy, then some Greek, and then realized she hates China and Chinese culture and the associated materialism so much that she needs to leave the country however possible (but not the marriage route, the Buddhism and Hindusim turned her celibate, so we're just bros). Today she's explaining to me about the Lantern Festival and the poetry associated with it (constantly being sad that you're away from your family): ladron posted:for haier's perusal and comment: But on a real thing: Hindu culture was not too cool about cats. Like everything in worldly cycle, they served a purpose (catch mice and rats), but they're on the side of superstition and were usually left alone and not domesticated the way dogs were there. The recent foreign-development of owning cats has polarized a lot of pet-people in India who still follow traditional ideas. PS: I forgot if a goon is Regulus Zhang? I saw the name on reddit and it was getting downvotes by angry laowai.

Like the tofu. 高粱 is pretty great, you just have to know how to drink it or what to drink it with. For instance, if you're shooting it, then you should have a can of Taiwan Classic at hand because something about the 58% alcohol content scouring your tongue makes Taiwan Classic taste like candy. Otherwise, keep a pot of 阿里山 tea at hand while sipping on the booze. An old pro I used to drink with explained that if you want to avoid burning your throat, you need to let your mouth acclimate to the proof, so the trick was to hold the shot in your mouth for a second or two before swallowing. I was in the train in Scotland yesterday, the train had not departed the station yet, and there was plenty of room for both passengers and baggage. I was placing my bag in the luggage rack and a dude tried to squeeze in between me and the rack, to place his bag there. There were no other bags there other than mine, there was plenty of room for further luggage, and loads of time to place his bag after I was done. But no, he insists on trying to squeeze his bag in in front of me. I wasn't having it, stood my ground, calmly placed my bag on the rack, made sure to not let him squeeze past, took off my coat in my own sweet time and placed it on bag as well, then walked away to my seat. It took about 15 seconds. During the entire time, he was fidgeting as if this was such a chore waiting that fifteen seconds.

Ganguro King posted:Do Chinese also call other asians "laowai"? Or is it like the Thai word "farang" where it mostly just applies to white people? Yeah it's mainly people from europe or the americas. I have black friends here who are also get referred to as laowai so I think it's more "not obviously from asia" than anything else these days. Most Asian people get their own, or several, very pejorative words. Japanese are ghosts/dogs/etc, Koreans are sticks, Indians are "A San" and I don't know the etymology of that one, etc... etc... These are also super commonly used , even when the people are talking positively about the country or person from that country in question.

I didn't know I would miss sleeping on a flat surface so much even if I am feeling a like stiff. A welcome improvement over Planes, Trains and Automobiles. The red pockets are flying every which way and my Cantonese is getting a good work out. Still a little overloaded but the cultural briefing from my Aunt is working out well. Thanks to the Goons for backing Korea Air. Good service, in flight entertainment is good enough. USB port for charging. comparatively generous leg room and lean back even in economy. The best movie they had was Operation Chromite as I can't really pass up on such a ridiculous over the top movie. The food is a bit of a mix bag even for airline food. Don't take the fish as it taste bland and has pretty poor texture. The Korean Chicken Fried rice is good but looking at the passenger next to me the beef curry might have been even better. The best meal would have been the weird rice mixing thing where you throw rice into a bowl of other ingredients, sesame oil and chili paste to flavor. Going to head out in a t-shirt and shorts as it is expected to climb to 17 with a low of 12. I will never not be amused by all the people in puff jackets and 3 layers or more of clothing in such mild temperatures because it's "cold" even when in doors where the air conditioning is set to 23. I sweat just looking at them. Looking forward to the rest of my stay in Hong Kong.

This is Japan. Edit: Also its a group to control damaging wild animals (捕獲隊). The gun shes holding is a training/replica (you can see a small bar of metal blocking the barrel; common in blank firing guns) but they're probably practicing drivebys on wild boar or bear that get into cities and have to be put down. China too though, but I meant laowai seems to be a catch-all for non Asian foreigner in semi-polite terms. Like a Chinese American would never be laowai, for instance where "这个老外” “那些老外” 等等 has also referred to black people in my experience. But that isn't the only thing I've ever heard then referred to by any mean. I've been called a 白人 and other things like 洋鬼子 and 美鬼子 (last one is very Sichuan-y) from time to time as well, but laowai is supposed to be the sort of polite one.

As far as I'm aware, 黑人 is only impolite in the sense that many Chinese simply don't like black people, so mentioning the word in and of itself is a bit impolite. 黑鬼 is just straight up hateful.
