I'm kinda surprised that they didn't mention that one of the more surprising things about Starship Troopers, in retrospect, is that it came out in 1997 and not post-9/11. Like, there was definitely a time in the '00s where I knew people who had just seen Starship Troopers and were convinced it was this really sharp commentary on the US's over-reaction to 9/11 and the lead-up to the war in Iraq. Then I'd show them when it was released and their minds were blown. Of course, I'm not at all surprised to see the youtube comments filled with lovely Heinlein fanboys trying to talk about how the movie sucks because it wasn't like the book. The book was fascist dick-sucking bullshit. Heinlein was pretty terrible overall, and I have no idea what it is about his work that seems to draw a particular type of nerd who will defend it to the death.

Whenever I see clips of Starship Troopers I'm always shocked at how well it holds up visually. The CGI has a certain verisimilitude that most big budget movies nowadays don't even try and aim for. CGI now is often colourful and flashy in a way that makes a film look and feel like a cartoon, while Troopers uses subtle, earthy tones for the bugs that land so much better for me.

I like how much of an idiot gently caress-up Rico is. Flunks out of every class in school, is only really good at space football. Thinks Carmen loves him, when she doesn't. Joins the military for Carmen and 'gently caress you dad'. Fucks up his space army man training and gets someone killed, gets flogged, Carmen breaks up with him via space email. Gets dragged around the galaxy to fight a war that was seemingly false flag'd by his own government, never sees a problem with this. Ignores the hot girl who likes him, continues to pine for Carmen. Never, ever seems to display an original thought or even an unoriginal one. Happens to survive through luck or happenstance or the sacrifice of others and gets promoted to lead his own platoon.

When I read the book I always assumed that he knew that the system of government of ST was awful as poo poo, but the people who benefit/are indoctrated the most into the system are the ones teaching the ethics classes and such, and therefore everyone thinks that it's alright, and every previous form of government was hellish and bad. I guess I read too much into it?

Two problems with this. 1. They shot an asteroid across the entire galaxy while seeming to lack any sort of space-based infrastructure. And, until Klendathu, the humans don't think the bugs were intelligent, just animals - so how did they knowingly send a rock to smash Earth? 2. Earth has a defense network that we see is very good at blowing up asteroids earlier in the film, and yet it failed to get this one. Krinkle posted:What's that now? My favorite thing that isn't really touched on is how poo poo the Federation's tactics are. They send in ground troops en masse to get slaughtered, then only later after promoting a new sky marshall do they think to bomb the planet first with jets and send the infantry to clean up.

They didn't drop nukes as casually as they did in the book, though. I love the Verhoven movie especially how wrong people get it sometimes. So many people thought it was a straight up love letter to fascism.

The show itself is more monster/mission of the week stuff but it is structured ad you said out of Private Higgins war correspondence videos. It has a bit of a tonal issue where it isn't sure of its target audience at times. You get mixed scenes of bug carnage and mind rape next to episodes with guys saying "really deep doodoo" and Dizzy screaming yahoo like a four year old on a child Rollercoaster. Got better about it towards the end though. I think what makes Paul Verhoeven films stand out to this day is the lighting and cinematography. All of his films are very stark looking, with extremely bright but even lighting or extremely dark and dynamic shadows. And the man has a very deliberate arm when filming action, with lots of steady pans or long shots where the camera barely moves. It doesn't matter that the camera doesn't move though because the shot composition is already so good everything you need to see is onscreen. And the war was absolutely a false flag. The only thing more ludicrous than the bugs hurling a rock across the galaxy and hitting earth is the Roger Young managing to get scraped by it first. And of course the ship's conning tower gets taken out, so they can't get word back to earth, but they somehow can tell that it came from the arachnid quarantine zone. The only reason Carmen even saw the asteroid is because she'd shaved distance off of her trajectory. Even barring their FTL technology, the federation would have ample time to intercept and destroy a rock traveling at sublight speed, without the Roger Young getting hit as well. The "would you like to know more?" segments were to bash people over the head with "SATIRE!" because the rest of the movie may have been too subtle, but even then.. Verhoven is a character, apparently he directed the shower scene in the nude (and was the first one to get nude) because he's dutch and doesn't give a gently caress about nudity. It's funny too because at the time when it came out I was  about Denise Richards but now, Dina Meyer all the way.
