That's interesting, because DW as a proper in-house BBC production is generally a lot better about abuse of it's staff than most other production companies. Art dept + costume does stupid hours, of course, but everything else seemed to be 70's unions glory days of 12 on, 12 off, guv.

Not saying that's not true, of course, if it is then more power to Ecclestone for standing up to it, god bless him.

XII! Still another 8 months to go, although quite a lot of my stuff ended up in XI as pickups (watch how Starbug's control panels change to a new exciting style during some closeups). The only show I've ever done that was harder than DW, but that was 10 weeks as opposed to 10 months.

I wonder if it's a result of Doctor Who becoming such a big hit for the BBC (this was during filming of season 1 so it was before the show had started and become a huge it), the change in production crew (maybe that's why RTD got more stuff done than Moffat does!) or just a general shift in attitudes?

The last story in Forty-Five is amazing and the first three are sort of okay. And Benedict Cumberbatch is in it, apparently! At one point Steven Hall was going to write loads of stuff for Big Finish; I expect if he had he would now be regarded as one of the best Who writers ever.

A Grade: The Wormery, The Natural History Of Fear, Night Terrors, The Nowhere Place, Terror Firma, The Year Of The Pig, Son of the Dragon, The Magic Mousetrap, Paper Cuts.

B Grade: The Condemned, The Death Collectors, Red, Valhalla, Time Works, The Settling, Circular Time, Caerdroia, The Last, Arrangements For War.

I'd also recommend The Destroyer Of Delights, but it's in the middle of a particularly heavy arc and doesn't stand alone very well.

That said, you generally can't go wrong in that era, unlike the 170+ range, where you have to get a lot more selective.

Let me calculate:

1-50 is 4x32(12 early episode subscription)+2*2.99 = 133.98 £/$/€
51-125 is 75x5 (this week only!) = 300 £/$/€
Total: 433.98 £/$/€

I would pick them all.

Assuming you want to spend less and capable of doing so:

5th Doctor
81. THE KINGMAKER
91. CIRCULAR TIME

6th Doctor:
57. ARRANGEMENTS FOR WAR
90. YEAR OF THE PIG

7th Doctor
74. LIVE 34
85. RED

8th Doctor
52. SCHERZO

OR
Pick a favourite doctor and buy his episodes for 100 or less.
No 8th doctor though, his Divergent universe arc is baaa-a-aaad. (Scherzo is great)

Have fun!
My suggestions...

5th Doctor
Singularity – Five and Turlough in post-Soviet hyper-capitalist Russia, a great sci-fi bent and one hell of an ending that only Five could pull off.
The Kingmaker – A solid historical with a great premise, one of the best cliffhangers ever, and a good bit of humor running throughout.
The Gathering – Joseph Lidster finally puts “misery porn” to good use as we get Tegan’s last (chronological) story.
Son of the Dragon – A pure historical, no sci-fi elements, and James Purefoy kills as Vlad Tepes.

6th Doctor
Arrangements for War – the closest Six will ever come to becoming “Time Lord Victorious” with a heartbreaker of an ending. Maybe the best Six/Evelyn story.
Thicker Than Water – a worthy follow-up to Arrangements for War with Mel thrown into the mix.
Year of the Pig – I can’t even begin to describe this one, but it’s well worth the pick-up.

7th Doctor
The Harvest – the introduction of Hex and a really well done Cyberman story.
Night Thoughts – an unproduced script from the classic series and a really well done ghost story.
Frozen Time – this is a personal choice, but I’m a sucker for the Ice Warriors, plus it’s a Seven travelling alone, closer to his regeneration into Eight and you can sense his weariness.

8th Doctor
Scherzo – The less said about this one, the better. An amazing piece of audio.
Faith Stealer – Probably the best look at religious extremism without being heavy-handed. All hail the Great Oops!
The Last – a great example of how to pen a dark and bleak story without resorting to “misery porn.”
Time Works – my favorite Eight story outside of The Chimes of Midnight with a society all about how you use the time given to you.
The Girl Who Never Was – not a perfect story, but the end of Charley’s time with Eight makes it worth the listen.

**

And great review of the River Song boxset, J-Ru. Nice to see that outside the Main Range Big Finish can still put on a good story or two...

I'm actually a bit bummed. Work is so hectic here lately (I work at the United States Department of State - our new Secretary is really freakin' cool, but HIS boss is making things a loving nightmare) that I can't even bring myself to enjoy Doctor Who right now. I've tried to watch The Face of Evil three times this past month but just keep turning it off with a sigh and the UNIT/Silence boxset has been on my phone for two months.

The Gathering is basically held together/works because Janet Fielding is, as always, fantastic and her chemistry with Peter Davison is still going strong.

There's a bit where the Doctor very awkwardly brings up what has earlier been suggested to him, that perhaps Tegan was in love with him all those years ago and her reaction is absolutely goddamn perfect :allears:

Most of my faves/important ones have already been mentioned, and I'll give a shout out to The Death Collectors - some the best production I've heard in an audio format, period (second only to Roger Waters' Amused to Death). If you want to experience how cinematic something can be without visuals, this is the one.

I had more, but realized they were almost all Colin Baker, he was just killing it during that period. If you got everything of his that wasn't by Paul Magrs, Joseph Lidster, or Robert Ross, you'd be doing pretty drat well. (Although you'd have to pay full price for Blue Forgotten Planet, last part of a series, the dastards!)

The episode has got a ton of problems, but I can imagine based on Last of the Time Lords that one of the things the Master most looked forward to each day while running his global breakfast radio show was seeing how the Doctor and the others would try to escape/foil him this time so he could have the fun of putting them down.

I definitely would have preferred more Capaldi. I guess it's a comfort thing for the actors though, they've gotten used to a particular showrunner/crew and the idea of their last year being under a new regime probably doesn't appeal.

I'm still torn about Tennant not sticking around for Moffat's first year, because I think it would have been great.... but then on the other hand Matt Smith's first season is just so loving amazing I wouldn't want to change it for anything.

Whenever they cast a new Doctor, they take the new actor to Tom's place while he's at the pub (so basically whenever they want to) and go through his wardrobe to pick up a new outfit.

The only exception is Peter Capaldi, who had already snuck into Jon Pertwee's place years earlier.

One thing that will be interesting with the new Doctor is who their "my Doctor" will be. Who was the one they grew up with, remembered most, and will most emulate in aspects of their performance?

As Tennant and RTD scripted into Time Crash, Tennant's was Davison.

Matt Smith was new to the series, but upon watching old episodes fell in love with Troughton and informed his character via the Second Doctor.

Capaldi was a huge fan of Pertwee and T Baker.

A younger Doctor could have grown up with and most remembered/like Colin Baker or McCoy. A really young Doctor might even have fallen in love with the show right away with Eccleston or even Tennant! It will bear watching.
